    In Bioshock 2, if you have a little sister gather in the Cohen's Collection room of Dionysus Park, a ghostly laugh comes from nowhere and this theme plays during the fight. Genius.

    So when Gary Schyman wrote this, he had no idea that a character was going to be blown up in the middle of it.
    Apparently he was pleasantly surprised when he learned this. Not sure it that's a good thing, but this song is truly great.

    For me the mind blowing thing was that, despite being batshit crazy, Cohen appeared to be one of the saner, "in control" people you've met in the game so far. It's like he was so insane that he stack overflowed into sanity.
    Rapture has spiraled so deep into utter madness that a complete maniac like Cohen not only fits perfectly, but appears to be one of the saner people left.

      All these people are based off of subversives/spies during Weimar Germany lol. It's crazy how none of you know this... Hirschfeld for example is based off of a REAL LIFE QUACK who did insane sex change experiments on people, cut up their faces etc. You can find info on this in a docu here on youtube called "Berlin Sin Cities"

      I'd think it was because he wasn't really a splicer? The others are crazy due to the addiction to Adam and such, but cohen is just mad in the arts, of course he probably dabbled with Adam himself, but not to the extent of others in rapture, who got hooked to it due to the civil war and general chaos, cohen was already mad before any of that, doubt he even really cared about the war and such, just wanted to do art

Walking around, seeing the dystopia, yet, a place that wants to be explored. All the while listening to this song, seeing what it could have been. It's weird, if the piece is played even a tiny bit incorrect it loses some if the beauty in the making. The emotion and insanity of it all is just amazing. It switches through different emotions and rises and sets almost naturally. It is almost understanding of why in the scene Cohen stopped Fitzpatrick. If he didn't the start of the piece would have just acted as a flimsy support for the rest of the masterpiece, continuing would have been a mistake. A great care must be out into playing this piece and emotion must be shown throughout, expressing the different themes and ideas behind each part. Played correctly this is just beautiful.

      It's completely off, that's the point. The notes themselves are mainly correct, but there are some strategically placed mistakes. It's mainly the insane, erratic tempo that makes no sense, and the constant clash of dissonant and consonant elements, and also the dynamic changing constantly (some parts are unusually quiet, at some he literally bangs the keys).
      It's really like being inside a mind of a batshit insane person like Cohen.

    I love Cohen and his visual art throught the level, particularly the "Frozen family" (yes, I am aware those are actual frozen people). I think in this level, the reason why he takes us under his wing goes beyond mere ego like Ryan says. I think he knows, at some extent, that Jack is a slave, not a man. Like him, Jack is cursed. Traped in his own body and mind (I think that's also why Cohen's splicers don't speak, it's to show us that we are no different from those mindless servants). But he knows Jack has the potential to transform the world the world, and the actual technique to do it, unlike his old proteges. He just has to embrace what he can do by himself. Not care about other people's opinions. But to do that, Cohen believes he has to break us. Make us be so mentally exausted, that we just don't care anymore how we reach the end of our journey. Because it's when you're tired, that you do what you believe that needs to be done.

    • @Tedsta101
      @Tedsta101 10 років тому +10

      clowntrooper61 It's pretty technical; arpeggios, etc. It's not impossible to play, but it's just not something that you could do after 2 years. Most people would still be playing pretty rudimentary pieces after 2 years of practice.

      ***** With a good teacher and a good appetite for learning and practice...I'd say probably around 4-6 years. Your age and your predisposition towards music will also factor in; the younger you are and the more natural talent you have, the faster you'll get to this level.

    I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of this, but I'm going to say it anyway. Personally I think this piece speaks volumes about the general progression of the game. Starts out fairly simple, yet with ominous warnings on the surface, gradually increasing in intensity. Then suddenly hits you with pure insanity, with the main melody gradually decending into pure chaos and confusion. With brief rests in the middle for the player to catch their breath, only to be thrust back in to the distortion and darkness that is Rapture. And finally, with the last few bars/ measures hitting you like the big reveal at the end of it all.

    I honestly can't help but feel bad for Cohen.
    I imagine him sitting alone in that theatre, crying his eyes out as he plays. He cries because of frustration, he cries from loneliness, and he cries in an addition to his quiet rage as he realizes that, truly, as an artist is nothing without an audience....he is nothing.
    And so he plays his masterpiece, his Scherzo, in lamentation of his life, a half-life, as his sanity slowly slips away until he is no longer a man, but a monster.

    This music is chilling, a tribute to any collection. You can feel ... rage, determination, madness, sorrow and success. You can feel the twitch in your fingers and when you hear the soft tapping upon those ivories your mind dances along the keys. Haunting, beautiful, you can see the mind within the madness. Cohen is a genius, a character of skill and wit and insanity, all blended into a deliciously attractive villain. Ode to thee, Mr. Cohen; ode to thee.
