I would suggest taking the bumpers to a chrome shop and have them remove the chrome. Paid $100 to strip both bumpers, saved me a bunch of time.
It cost him only $80 to fill up back then. What a world. Only 4 years ago.
Nice one 👍
I paint years ago already my Chrom bumpers from all my 2nd gen trucks with no issue.... all it needs is good sanding and primer 👍
Great job! You are 100% correct, body shops don’t wanna do the color matching to chrome parts because most of the time the customers don’t want to pay the labor cost that’s needed to do it right! However!, my body shop fortunately do a lot of color matching, I love seeing the transformation of our customer vision! Yours turned out great!!
Little tip. I used an air sander with 60 grit paper. Spent 3 days sanding every inch. Used alcohol to clean, self etching primer and then sprayed with upol raptor liner. Bumpers have been done this way since I bought the truck in 2012. I used 2 literally per bumper to get it super thick to protect against rocks and chips. No issues and still to this day hasn't faded. Getting ready to redo the two tone black as it's chipped bad.
Keep up the videos and the truck. For now I'm living through you until I get in my dream career wind turbines.
Good to hear. I'm going to use the raptor on my back bumper.
Thanks for that tip!
We just painted chrome bumpers for a Chevy pickup in the body shop where I work. Yes preparation is key for a quality result
Its all about the primer you use. Chrome can easily be painted. Well and the preparation of the chrome. It can easily be painted and last for years.
Would it better if I sand blasted the chrome bumpers then? How durable do you think your bumper is compared to others that are vinyl wraped I’m trying to figure out witch way to go I like to off-road from time to time and want something durable enough
Stick Diesels with straight pipes is the BEST SOUND on earth, I’m getting straight 5” on my 7.3 Stick, CANT WAIT!
Wassup FixNick 2 weeks late.
Elijah Williams late for what?
@@FixItNick The comment. Because u posted the comment 2 weeks ago
Elijah Williams what am I late for??
I paint cars for a living at a body shop . The best way to paint chrome parts is to use 80 grit sandpaper and try your best to cut into it as much as possible. Clean it with wax and grease remover and then spray a high solids epoxy primer. There is a compound in epoxy known as chromate and it really has a good biting characteristic to it . Then after flash time you can paint your base coat and clear coat . The epoxy dries so hard that if you do get a chip it won't go all the way down to the chrome at least in theory . I've painted plenty of chrome parts and never have had one come back using this method. But there is still no guarantee that it will last forever and body shops will not warranty it
I have a 2017 1500 and I plan on wrapping the bumpers and grill to color match it, would that work fine?
I have put paint protection film over a ceramic coating worked fine for me, great job dude!!!!
Yea i work at a paint and body shop and my boss wont paint chrome but im glad to see that you can do that im about to do a 2016 sierra 2500hd build and im gonna have to paint the chrome bumpers so its nice to know if you do it right it can be done im probablu gonna sand it with 36 grit and work my way up to 180 then prime it
Do you think it would turn out nicely if I prepped the same way but used aerosol spray can with a spray can clear coat?
Ever thought about removing that black vinyl off the doors??
That truck looks amazing. Love the color. Nice work!
Question I have a 2020 Tacoma with Crome looking rear bumper ends middle black . Any way I want to paint it. How did you paint yours looks really nice!
Painted several chrome bumpers and grills. And yes they don’t want to mess with it because they don’t want to warranty it. Looks awesome
I manage a Body Shop and that is exactly why we dont want to paint chrome. Everything we do has a lifetime warranty and we just cant warranty painted chrome plus to properly prep it is just not cost effective.
I just sanded mine with 100 grid, hit it with some prep spray and a adhesive spray and then primered it as well you’ll think that’ll hold pretty well?
I'm wondering if you changed the front and rear bumper because the paint started to peal off ?! I'm about to do mine and on ram forum many people said no matter what you do won't be any good...you still have the old bumpers ? I wish i could see how they were holding up ?!
Would you be able to use a grinding wheel to remove the chrome?
I just look at another video of your it been what 6 months now and it still look good. awesome job by way
I just sold my chrome bumper, and bought an unpainted clean one with the money.
Once you sand off the chrome. Using 80 grit and a sander will do it. You're down to metal. You dont need the etching primer. Use finer sand paper, prep, prime, fine sand and paint.
6:57 80 grit plus self etching primer
80, etch primer 2k, then san with 320 and reprime to get all the 80 grit out. 600 and its ready to shoot
bro I painted Chrome in early 2000's pretty much the same way, I used emery cloth sandpaper, used adhesion promoter and DTM Primer, went light on the promoter, and then painted it and cleared, I made sure to cover all edges as well, it is still damn near perfect
Good work bro, I had my experience with painting Chrome never again lol ... however, I’ll sand blast it and powder coat it on my project that I’ll be doing this year. Another option is to plastidip lol
Plastidip will peel. Buddy did it to his chrome bumpers and it just started peeling so bad.
Clip at the end is why I love to see this truck progress
Thanks. I'm about to do the back bumper on my 2015 Cummins. Exact info I needed.
It's all on knowing what you're doing and being willing to take the time to do it right.
Was just gonna say this.... Ive done it and have never had issues... Just need to know what you're talking about doing
I have 2012 Ram 1500 5.7L HEMI and I’m going to be painting the Crome on my grill and badges to black.. maybe my stock rims as well if I don’t find any better rims to fit my K02s
Great vid buddy!!! Job well done!!! They still look great!!
Will sandblasting get the chrome down to where it needs to be to paint?
How does the paint affect your parking sensor function?
what do u think about get it swapped 2nd gen manifold?
I painted with flat black primer, and then use the black crackle truck bed paint. Worked just fine, and if I get any chips, I spray a little truck bed paint on it, no problems.
I bought mine colormatched and is chipped bad. Whenever I get a foglight bumper I hope I can find a paintable one not a chrome one.
That’s crazy, I go fishing on walnut street all the time, awesome to see your local
What prep did you need to do for the plastic?
That manual transmission is a conversion or it is stock?
Hey I have 2012 1500 I’m trying to do the same lift and set up for my truck but the website where you got yours just gives me other options can you please help with a link where I can buy mine?
2012 1500 check Out Zone Off-road’s website you’ll beable to pick what height and options you want. Our suspensions are different if that’s what you are asking 👍🏼
what kind of etching primer did you use?
Who/where did you get your paint through??
New to lifted trucks... picking up a 2015 f150 (6' bed). Any suggestions for a 4" lift and tire/wheel set? I live at 9000' in the mtns so something that's good for winter but also comfortable and reasonably quiet on the highway (w/out a big penalty on MPG). Thanks for any input here!
Hybrid Tire like Nitto Ridge Grappler would be nice also, ready lift makes a 3.5” lift with UCA’s I believe for that truck much more cost effective than a full 4” if you want a full 4” I recommend Zone For great kit that rides great and frame modification is minimal!!
What kind of etching primer did you use?
How about sandblasting does that work on chrome?
I’m old, I still love chrome but I can still really appreciate the look of blacked out trim or monochromatic scheme. The truck looks great, I’m just not into that grill but it’s cool to see your excitement.
I need to paint my bumpers, yours look amazing!
Why you don’t change front and rear lights for the front and rear oem sport lights
Where do you get the paint from? Is it mopar paint?
I powder coated my chrome bumpers on my Silverado, color matched. Problem with painting your bumpers is the rock chips, it will chip. Big difference in looks between powder coating & painting them. And you don't need to invest 27 hours in it when you Powder Coat, that's about $25K worth of my time.
Im a small pant shop in edinburg texas we paint over chrome. You do have to sand with 80 to give a mechanical bond, and use etch primer to chemically bond as well them let it dry hit it with 320 prime once more with regular polyester or high build primer your choices so you have something to sand 600 with. Then base and clear. It is very tine consuming so if you want it done cheap id do it on my own
Hey Ryan I saw you used deltron paint base what reducer and clear coat did you use and how much paint was needed for the bumpers and grille??
I believe deltron clear too. Grille and bumpers was maybe 1/3 Qt
Thinking of powder coating my front bumper. I was gonna vynil wrap it but cost double the price, yeah painting with regular paint it will chip powder coat ftw
You should buy 3m paint protection film on Amazon and cover the whole bumper for extra protection.
With any paint job it's best to not take shortcuts on the base and prep work. I know a painter that does phenomenal work. He tells people that come to him asking to paint the whole car that you don't want to go to him for that because he is too expensive. He is not shy about charging because he knows how good his work is. He also knows the time and attention it takes in the prep work to make sure that everything above it is right. That and he will not use cheap paint he only uses premium paint. That part you can get away with cheaper but for him if he's putting his name on a job on someone else's vehicle he's not gonna go cheap.
Would sand blasting work to remove the chrome
Awesome video. Yep I have a 2001 F350 and I was thinking about doing this job. Hum not now, I think I'll just replace the bumper with a black one and paint that. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
Brand new sub here! Love the content man, I can't wait to see what you do in 2019!!!
Sand the chrome well, use a quality etching primer, wet sanding the primer is the key. Always remember if your pre work is done correctly, your paint will look awesome and last.
What kind of clutch what size exhaust and what kind of tuner
Here we are in 2021. How has the paint help up now?
Hey man truck looks good I did my yukon in raptor liner blue and gray I sanded it with 60 grit but not long enough then sprayed it with acid etch primer held good for a while then got another big hail storm. So it started to flake off and then I decided to just buy a new bumper and Grill and start over cuz for a 97 GMC Yukon it was only a hundred fifty-two hundred bucks so I totally get your 27 hours of prep working on bumper and Grill now plan to reinstall and reshoot paint like your truck
What kind of headlights are those?
How's it been holding?
Considering the cost of them tires... I'll give you both thumbs for the effort bud!!!!
Can't wait to see the rebuild done
You can bulldog the bumper and paint them then use something like a 3m clear wrap over it. The only way to do it right is to just grind the chrome off and prime the bumper with a direct to metal primer then go from there..For all the work you would be better off finding a used painted or aftermarket black bumper and respraying it and just sell your chrome bumper to recoup the money you spent on the painted one.
AWSOME burnout for a diesel 6 speed👍🏻 Cummins rocks!
i always sandblast chrome if i want to paint it.. works 100%
Hey bro how much road walk do you feel on the steering wheel with that tire and wheel set up?
Like none!! Dual fox stabilizers help so much!!
Good video dude, i hate the chrome on my truck and think I'll do the same... Just curious wherr you got the lime park sense for you truck ?
Painted those! You can see in the painting vid! 😎
I want to paint my bumper to instead of the chrome but this truck is still a beast 🔥😈
Armando Moreno powder coat it last longer they have any color
I painted over a chrome grill guard I sanded it down with 80 grit by hand and the chrome was coming off and started to look bronze kinda I used etching primer on the medal and surfacer after then I sprayed it black and clear the he mfkrr started to chip off a few after so I sold it
I like the part when he said.. "you can't paint chrome "
😂😂
Im seeing alot of videos that say otherwise
That's the best camo paint job I've ever seen on a trailer🤣
Did you have to order your truck? I can’t find a single 6 speed big horn with the luxury package. Either the gauges are analog or it’s the tradesmen radio. Been looking for weeks now lol
EXACTLY CANNOT FIND ONE ANYWHERE! Including GREEN haha! Lucky mine was on a lot in Indiana, otherwise I woulda ordered haha
My local dealership body shop didnt tell me no on color matching my chrome rear bumper
It’s going to chip then it’s all down hill from there.
I did the same to my ram it looked really good for most of a year but second year it’s looking shotty.
Painted my f150 front and back held up for about a year. But I sanded it well as you did.
What happened after a year? It fall off?
Idk if it would be possible what If you could sand blast it, might save time
What tires you got?
You can just get the bumpers sandblast and that's it ready for paint
I’m glad you made this video explaining how to paint the chrome bumpers. I want to get rid of the chrome bumpers on my truck as well. What about the sensors in the front and rear of the bumpers. Did you remove them and then reinstall them or did you just paint right over them?
Hopefully you didn’t but don’t paint over sensors, if they have too much paint and clear on them they won’t work
wrapping the chrome with same color or paint the wrap
You did a good job painting the bumper
Morimoto head and taillights man that will complete the beauty of that lime queen bro
I work on auto body if you sand down with 60 grit use bulldog adhesion promoter sit for 7 min spray your urethane primer high build and seal then paint the paint will not come off
Looks nice, too bad I don’t have the energy for all that lol, but I’ve been looking to try and remove Crome 👍
80 grit da sander a good 2k etch primer 2-3 medium to wet coats then it’s just like a normal pre paint prep wet sand 400-600-800 degrease and tack cloth then lay the color and clear on her!
Lol welcome to 2020. She's a riot.
Yea the body shops around me said the same. Ill most likely have the chrome parts wrapped.
self etching primer???? It will work fine.
Where you towing something?
What about rhino lining the bumpers ?
Great video today bud!
Thank ya! 😎
I thought about a burn out but I chickened out at the thought of money burning up as well. Someday lol!
Body shops have to guarantee the paint work for life so they’d rather not deal with the hassle
Haven’t had to fill up in 3 months work to much
Fine nutshell blast media at 40 psi. Prime and shoot, has worked for me fairly well however one mistake and you pit everything. Good luck
