Little tip. I used an air sander with 60 grit paper. Spent 3 days sanding every inch. Used alcohol to clean, self etching primer and then sprayed with upol raptor liner. Bumpers have been done this way since I bought the truck in 2012. I used 2 literally per bumper to get it super thick to protect against rocks and chips. No issues and still to this day hasn't faded. Getting ready to redo the two tone black as it's chipped bad. Keep up the videos and the truck. For now I'm living through you until I get in my dream career wind turbines.
I paint cars for a living at a body shop . The best way to paint chrome parts is to use 80 grit sandpaper and try your best to cut into it as much as possible. Clean it with wax and grease remover and then spray a high solids epoxy primer. There is a compound in epoxy known as chromate and it really has a good biting characteristic to it . Then after flash time you can paint your base coat and clear coat . The epoxy dries so hard that if you do get a chip it won't go all the way down to the chrome at least in theory . I've painted plenty of chrome parts and never have had one come back using this method. But there is still no guarantee that it will last forever and body shops will not warranty it
Once you sand off the chrome. Using 80 grit and a sander will do it. You're down to metal. You dont need the etching primer. Use finer sand paper, prep, prime, fine sand and paint.
Great job! You are 100% correct, body shops don’t wanna do the color matching to chrome parts because most of the time the customers don’t want to pay the labor cost that’s needed to do it right! However!, my body shop fortunately do a lot of color matching, I love seeing the transformation of our customer vision! Yours turned out great!!
Sand the chrome well, use a quality etching primer, wet sanding the primer is the key. Always remember if your pre work is done correctly, your paint will look awesome and last.
Im a small pant shop in edinburg texas we paint over chrome. You do have to sand with 80 to give a mechanical bond, and use etch primer to chemically bond as well them let it dry hit it with 320 prime once more with regular polyester or high build primer your choices so you have something to sand 600 with. Then base and clear. It is very tine consuming so if you want it done cheap id do it on my own
I manage a Body Shop and that is exactly why we dont want to paint chrome. Everything we do has a lifetime warranty and we just cant warranty painted chrome plus to properly prep it is just not cost effective.
Sand blast the bumper to rough it up. Chrome is a bitch to sand its super hard. Once it's roughed up, the hard part is done. I'd probaly use epoxy primer instead of etch primer first since the etch, in the etch primer will probably not etch into the chrome. Then primer filler, sand smooth, and paint.
Question I have a 2020 Tacoma with Crome looking rear bumper ends middle black . Any way I want to paint it. How did you paint yours looks really nice!
You can bulldog the bumper and paint them then use something like a 3m clear wrap over it. The only way to do it right is to just grind the chrome off and prime the bumper with a direct to metal primer then go from there..For all the work you would be better off finding a used painted or aftermarket black bumper and respraying it and just sell your chrome bumper to recoup the money you spent on the painted one.
bro I painted Chrome in early 2000's pretty much the same way, I used emery cloth sandpaper, used adhesion promoter and DTM Primer, went light on the promoter, and then painted it and cleared, I made sure to cover all edges as well, it is still damn near perfect
I'm wondering if you changed the front and rear bumper because the paint started to peal off ?! I'm about to do mine and on ram forum many people said no matter what you do won't be any good...you still have the old bumpers ? I wish i could see how they were holding up ?!
Good work bro, I had my experience with painting Chrome never again lol ... however, I’ll sand blast it and powder coat it on my project that I’ll be doing this year. Another option is to plastidip lol
Hey I have 2012 1500 I’m trying to do the same lift and set up for my truck but the website where you got yours just gives me other options can you please help with a link where I can buy mine?
2012 1500 check Out Zone Off-road’s website you’ll beable to pick what height and options you want. Our suspensions are different if that’s what you are asking 👍🏼
I painted with flat black primer, and then use the black crackle truck bed paint. Worked just fine, and if I get any chips, I spray a little truck bed paint on it, no problems.
With any paint job it's best to not take shortcuts on the base and prep work. I know a painter that does phenomenal work. He tells people that come to him asking to paint the whole car that you don't want to go to him for that because he is too expensive. He is not shy about charging because he knows how good his work is. He also knows the time and attention it takes in the prep work to make sure that everything above it is right. That and he will not use cheap paint he only uses premium paint. That part you can get away with cheaper but for him if he's putting his name on a job on someone else's vehicle he's not gonna go cheap.
Sand for half your life or buy a primed one and sell the chrome one for what you paid for the primed one to a second gen guy. We all know at least one that wants a 4th gen bumper!
I couldn’t find a black bumper with fog lights and sensors OR an already painted one with lights and sensors front and rear! I found one or the other or I found just the front painted and no rear with sensors or a paint front that was damaged 😂😂😂 or the perfect condition walnut brown sensor and fog light bumper located in Texas with local pickup and was over priced at $500 🤷🏼♂️ or 5 hours of sanding and $10 in sanding disks 😂😂😂
Chromatic Auto Detailing right they can name the price and take advantage of the insurance company cause we i know “cash” payers will laugh when quoted
Would it better if I sand blasted the chrome bumpers then? How durable do you think your bumper is compared to others that are vinyl wraped I’m trying to figure out witch way to go I like to off-road from time to time and want something durable enough
Did you have to order your truck? I can’t find a single 6 speed big horn with the luxury package. Either the gauges are analog or it’s the tradesmen radio. Been looking for weeks now lol
New to lifted trucks... picking up a 2015 f150 (6' bed). Any suggestions for a 4" lift and tire/wheel set? I live at 9000' in the mtns so something that's good for winter but also comfortable and reasonably quiet on the highway (w/out a big penalty on MPG). Thanks for any input here!
Hybrid Tire like Nitto Ridge Grappler would be nice also, ready lift makes a 3.5” lift with UCA’s I believe for that truck much more cost effective than a full 4” if you want a full 4” I recommend Zone For great kit that rides great and frame modification is minimal!!
I painted over a chrome grill guard I sanded it down with 80 grit by hand and the chrome was coming off and started to look bronze kinda I used etching primer on the medal and surfacer after then I sprayed it black and clear the he mfkrr started to chip off a few after so I sold it
Hey man truck looks good I did my yukon in raptor liner blue and gray I sanded it with 60 grit but not long enough then sprayed it with acid etch primer held good for a while then got another big hail storm. So it started to flake off and then I decided to just buy a new bumper and Grill and start over cuz for a 97 GMC Yukon it was only a hundred fifty-two hundred bucks so I totally get your 27 hours of prep working on bumper and Grill now plan to reinstall and reshoot paint like your truck
I work on auto body if you sand down with 60 grit use bulldog adhesion promoter sit for 7 min spray your urethane primer high build and seal then paint the paint will not come off
I have 2012 Ram 1500 5.7L HEMI and I’m going to be painting the Crome on my grill and badges to black.. maybe my stock rims as well if I don’t find any better rims to fit my K02s
@@jamesmoffitt8920 Can't speak for Dodge, but most newer trucks have good sound dampening in the cabin. My Powerstroke is straight piped and it's pretty damn quiet in the cab, and doesn't barely drone at any rpm. Idk how the Cummins does when it comes to droning at certain rpm's. They're just louder engines, and you gotta embrace the sound lmao
Yea i work at a paint and body shop and my boss wont paint chrome but im glad to see that you can do that im about to do a 2016 sierra 2500hd build and im gonna have to paint the chrome bumpers so its nice to know if you do it right it can be done im probablu gonna sand it with 36 grit and work my way up to 180 then prime it
80 grit da sander a good 2k etch primer 2-3 medium to wet coats then it’s just like a normal pre paint prep wet sand 400-600-800 degrease and tack cloth then lay the color and clear on her!
Wrap the chrome with porous vinyl, paint over the vinyl, seal it up with several layers of 2k clear. Would look just as good, be less prone to chipping and probably save you 25 of the 27 hours your way takes...still looks amazing though.
I’m old, I still love chrome but I can still really appreciate the look of blacked out trim or monochromatic scheme. The truck looks great, I’m just not into that grill but it’s cool to see your excitement.
My friends buddy is painting both of my chrome bumpers, and painting my bed to match the rest of my truck for $2,000. I called car crafters they wanted $10,000 just to paint two bumpers and a bed.
I powder coated my chrome bumpers on my Silverado, color matched. Problem with painting your bumpers is the rock chips, it will chip. Big difference in looks between powder coating & painting them. And you don't need to invest 27 hours in it when you Powder Coat, that's about $25K worth of my time.
Awesome video. Yep I have a 2001 F350 and I was thinking about doing this job. Hum not now, I think I'll just replace the bumper with a black one and paint that. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
I’m glad you made this video explaining how to paint the chrome bumpers. I want to get rid of the chrome bumpers on my truck as well. What about the sensors in the front and rear of the bumpers. Did you remove them and then reinstall them or did you just paint right over them?
powder coating is a waste of money, its on my bumpers and is cracking off after 2 years. I see lots of trucks with aftermarket bumpers that the powder coating is coming off. it also fades and looks terrible where it has not cracked off yet. you are better off getting it sprayed with bedliner. you can get whatever color you want and companies like line x have lifetime warranty.
I would suggest taking the bumpers to a chrome shop and have them remove the chrome. Paid $100 to strip both bumpers, saved me a bunch of time.
It cost him only $80 to fill up back then. What a world. Only 4 years ago.

6:57 80 grit plus self etching primer
80, etch primer 2k, then san with 320 and reprime to get all the 80 grit out. 600 and its ready to shoot

I paint years ago already my Chrom bumpers from all my 2nd gen trucks with no issue.... all it needs is good sanding and primer 👍

Its all about the primer you use. Chrome can easily be painted. Well and the preparation of the chrome. It can easily be painted and last for years.

Idk if it would be possible what If you could sand blast it, might save time
You need to almost redline it, dump the clutch hard, and barely hold the brakes for a proper burnout
