  • I originally made this video in 2004 after visiting Elephant Island and the actual James Caird in London. But I am now revisiting it following the discovery of the wreck of Shackleton's famous vessel "Endurance" on March 5th 2022 by the Endurance22 Expedition.

I thoroughly recommend Shackleton’s book “South by Ernest Shackleton”. A brilliant story of endeavour and survival.
Shackleton never lost a man during the expedition.
There was another expedition consisting of a ship and crew that set sail from New Zealand, the idea being that it would meet Shackleton’s party on the other side of Antarctica. But I believe a crew member was lost.
I never new the boat James Caird was preserved, that was a nice surprise 👍

Actually, three men were lost from the Ross Sea party who were supposed to meet Shackleton. Their ship, Aurora, was swept out to sea with most of their provisions. There is a book "The Lost Men" by Tyler-Lewis. Also see my video about it at:

I have read "the Endurance" many times, and I always think of Earnest Shackletons voyage, as the most heroic adventure for so many reasons:
I never thought I would actually see The Endurance, resting on the oceans floor. Heart Wrenching and amazing photos: For me, is as/more meaningful than HMS Hood, Bismarck, Titanic, and the USS Arizona: The difference being, Endurance was on a peaceful scientific journey, not a war-ship, or an unsinkable.. . . If only Josh Slocum was aboard Endurance.. . . . the Endurance would have never get caught in that ice flow.. . . .
Josh Slocums book is a good read. "the Spray"

Only a single mention in the last seconds of Frank Worsley the New Zealander who if it wasn’t for his incredible navigation and seamanship Shackleton would never have survived this adventure. Poor show Mr Fleming.
