His story also illustrates the sheer folly of racism. For even if, for the sake of argument, one discounts the rank evil of apartheid, the policy still was a sheer failure: it deprived the South African military of the service of an unflinchingly determined, ingenious, and righteous man, and it defies reason to think that he was somehow the only one. The same argument applies to society in general, and this compelling lesson should be conveyed to posterity.

Looking at their exploits and their reputation till this day, if these men were allowed to serve and be part of their country South Africa would have been a shining example to all countries who were going through the same or similar issues of racism and segregation.
Times are busy in the UK at the moment but try contacting the British legion.....ask for someone to start a petition ... Ideally a present day veteran or honours holder. Im pretty sure if this story is raised then it will win the man the recognition and honour he clearly deserved. Of all the units in the military to win VCs and other high honour s ...its the Medical core and medics and stretcher barers who have won the most. Fijian's Gurka's, Sihk's and Sepoys all have their renown VC winners this man should have been Recognised years ago in SA. and the UK. 🇬🇧

As a retired soldier, I absolutely despise the fact that brave, honorable, men of color, were denied basics needs, but also denied any honors they deserved or still deserve. Humans. Cannot stand most of them.
The English were horrible to south africa. White or black. they put boers in concentration camps and denied black soldiers recognition of their acts, all the same.
The amount of recommendations for medals of honor and Victorian cross is insane but a lot of them were never recognized by the higher ups only recognized by their comrades... because of their skin... they were absolutely essential to the victory in Europe in Africa in the pacific and the Mediterranean if they left the war it would've been lost
A true hero Maseko was. It's sad to know what this man did and was not fairly recognized for it. He courageously, and unselfishly took on the Nazis by himself and without any direction from any superiors. A true unsung hero! I will share this story of courage with my children because they need to know that this man didn't sit ideally bye. And I am sure that there are other brave individuals like Maseko throughout history. Individuals that sacrificed their lives for our freedom we take for granted today.

Mr. Maseko was a true hero, the best kind of hero who does something that even if he knew that there would be no recognition of what he did, he did it anyway.
People forget that during the ww 2, South Africa was still only the union of South Africa. Thus a colony of the UK. South Africa became a republic only in 1961. And thus independent but still part of the common wealth. Si it was not the "apartheid government " that is responsible for the hero not being recognized for the VC.

Imagine being willing to fight for a country that is currently oppressing your people to prevent every non-nazi in world from facing even worse oppression, yet in return they are unwilling to, at the very least, arm you properly… It’s a sickening proposition. I’ve been fascinated with WWII since my childhood, but while there are incredible stories of valor and sacrifice interwoven throughout said history, there are also stinging reminders of how all of humanity has their own shortcomings. This man should have been honored for his actions and given the recognition he deserved during his lifetime.
One of my uncles was a Rat of Tobruk. He also fought at El Alamein. Not often we hear of Australian troops in Docos we get refered to as British or Commonwealth troops. My uncle returned home and I only heard of his exploits later in his life and felt he didn't need to talk about his fighting.
Fletcher: the Breaker would have been proud to pin a medal on this chap. Not only was the lad brave in the face of what any of us would consider impossible odds, he was smart. Clever. Ingenious and utilitarian. And most importantly, he had one thing the others didn't demonstrate: the WILL to do something. When a man wants to do something, really wants it -- not just whining and complaining why doesn't he already have it ---then that man can do impossible things. Aut viam veniam, aut faciam.
The man is a hero who should be remembered in perpetuity for his bravery and for the shameful way he was treated. Thank you for sharing this important piece of history!
New Zealand is extremely proud of our 'Māori Battalion'. They fought with distinction in both World Wars, and I'm pleased to say that their exploits are very well known here in NZ.

A minor point I guess but Maseko and his buddies were unloading the final stores from the ship in Tobruk harbour when he lit the fuse on his IED. When the ship caught fire and sank it was in fact empty so no supplies were lost and the only impact on the Afrika Corps’ logistics was that the wreck had to be cleared before another freighter could use that berth. Nice shots of the US Pacific campaign, I guess to keep us on our toes?

The French and Aussies were quite friendly to blacks. Also, the good guys were called that for a reason. Yes, some of them, namely the US, were racist. The difference is the US would sooner rather later end the laws specifically made to discriminate against them. The Germans would have had no such thing.
I for one am glad that this brave action is being recognised. Hero's, no matter their origin, race or colour are to be applauded and remembered. Their actions exceed the bounds of common man and yet the blood in their veins is the same, they feel the same pain and suffer the same anguish bought about by war. Anyone who uses colour, race or any difference to diminish these brave people should eternally hang their heads in shame for they are so much less in the eyes of humanity.

After defending the port at all costs, they were very angry at the high command giving it up only a short time later. Despite the seriousness of the video, I did have a small laugh at the description of Maseko as 'miner and chemical explosives connoisseur'. Thank you.

How foolish our ancestors were to not recognize him for the astound and brave Hero he was. I wish his memory to remain alive and honored as well as taught in schools. I hope as humans we grow out of our petty ways and can give respect where it is due no matter what someone looks like.

Brilliant piece. I believe there is also a school named after him in Springs, on the east rand of Johannesburg. I may be mistaken but many of the NMC men also only received a Toolbox and Tools as a pension pay out. Another Black South African hero that wasn't recognized is Lukas Majozi please do a piece on him he saved alot of mens lives. Both these men and their stories have lived and inspired me since high school. And in general the history of the. NLC/NMC of WW1 and the NMC in WW2

He was never recommended the Victoria Cross, he was given a lesser medal, the British Empire Medal, which was upgraded to the Military Medal.

Another Black South African hero that wasn't recognized is Lukas Majozi please do a piece on him he saved alot of mens lives.
Both these men and their stories have lived and inspired me since high school. And in general the history of the. NLC/NMC of WW1 and the NMC in WW2
