When Aurielle first inquired her DM read something to the effect of “I see you’re people of faith. I’m not yet engaged but I’m in love with your work and need to know if you’re homophobic before I get my hopes up.” This makes me laugh (out loud) now but at the time i was like “yo, she is BOLD.” The audacity! 😂 I replied with “We serve all good people. Reach out when your engaged though.”
We met with Aurielle & Zoë months later via Zoom and there was a tenderness there we’ll never forgot. When we ended the call I turned to Kaleb with pregnancy hormone filled 2020 tears in my eyes and he just replied “I know. I love them, too.”
We walked into Zoë & Aurielle’s wedding hoping they felt loved, but we stepped into editing their film with the intention of them feeling seen. The clip you see here was the original start of their film. But as we dove into the heavy lifting of editing, we felt it held more power within the context of their vows. “I promise to be your home, a soft place to land when the world is unkind and tries to make us small. And tries to disappear us.” Disappear us. That line of Zoë’s vows broke my heart on the wedding day and I allowed it to continue to edge my heart through the editing process. Zoë & Elle you are loved and you are seen. We see you.
As with all KEJ films, we share a final review with a trusted friend before delivering to the client. I sent this one to a friend I grew into adulthood with. We’ve created art with each other. We have journeyed through life together for over 17 years. His response reaffirmed a lot of things for me. That’s on the second slide.
