For my first 3 job offers involving developer and software roles 2 of the 3 companies seemed very interested in me because I had a custom and well built portfolio using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and some backend API's. I personally think portfolio's can be very useful in the job search process. I don't think a portfolio should be thrown together in a couple hours with a website builder but a portfolio definitely does not need to be amazing or game changing to have an impact.
As a Js - React developer, I know how difficult it is to be a developer. For this in my channel I have created projects in Html & Css and React & Tailwind, I share my skills. Nice video 😊
my boss, whos a senior dev doesnt even have a portfolio, he got a job out of college and didnt need it. meanwhile i as a bootcamp grad/self taught it was a deciding factor for landing my first job, but for jobs after that they didnt care

Nice video Kenny, but right now I’ve been out of work since last year. I’m coming from the healthcare field, but I’m into robotics it’s a hobby, and so I’ve took programming classes years ago. Right now I’m doing a python boot camp from Udemy. What do you think where I should start because I do like the idea of working from home….

Hi, I'm a biomedical engineer, self-thaught front end, mainly on React. I've been studying quite a lot and but I don't have done any project or any work. But I want to land my first job, is it bad to have a website but without any works/projects?
You need to start building projects as soon as possible. Otherwise everything you've studied is information that you've never applied in a practical context.
Do you have to reveal the source code to have something in your portfolio, what about if its something you have monetized that you don't want to be open source, can you still have it on your portfolio
Great content Kevin. But I wish you cut between section is a little bit more refine. There seems no pause between sentences (between sections) and it sound weird.

Hi Kenny, I have a question about mobile development. Do we need to know how to create a backend for mobile development or is it just calling API , getting data from backend and then displaying the data to the user ? If its just calling the API and displaying data then does that mean there is not much logic involved (compared to backend dev)? I been learning java for the past 6 months and have completed two side projects (console card games) and i am struggling to decide which path to specialize in...i am torn between choosing android development or java backend development and not sure if android development requires knowing backend dev also. I would like to use OOP concepts that i been learning and im not sure which path uses that more often.
I’d personally do Android dev. But that’s because I enjoy frontend mobile way better. So far I’ve had a pretty good career doing it. I’d say at some point you should spend some time and understand how backend works. Maybe make a REST api of your own and interface with some Database.
@@kennygunderman Got it. I already know the fundamentals of programming with Java. If I want to get into android development do you recommend learning android dev with Java or Kotlin?
This was a helpful video I've seen a lot of portfolio websites honestly they all look good but they all look the same I'm not sure if anybody really stands out per se needless to say I'm not a hiring manager for anything web development but I wasn't impressed after the first three or four portfolios I saw because literally they are the same so I agree with you about not making it overly Fancy on the visuals
I think showing competency with pure Javascript can be really good, but it’s definitely not required, and lots of companies want experience with specific frameworks. If it’s something really impressive you’ve done with Javascript then it can definitely be a great way to show your skills. If it’s something that could’ve just been done easier or better with a framework though, I’d recommend sticking to that. Inversely, if what you’ve done with a framework is just getting the framework to do all of the work for you, and you’re not really utilizing it for anything, it probably shouldn’t be included.

Does a mobile app developer need a portfolio to land their first job, or just links to their github projects in their resume?
prob just the links are fine but it's not too hard to get a basic HTML template, link them there, and host them for free. It will be a plus for sure.
