This is a masterpiece by Brazilian composer Francisco (Chico) Buarque de Holanda. It portrays the life of a bricklayer that falls from a building and dies in the street “hindering traffic”. The music has this steady and strong movement. But the real gem are the lyrics. Fantastic poetry. I always cry when I listen to it. More so when I listen to these young musicians led by the incredible Joan Chamorro. Absolute art in all aspects!
I think this is an incredible musical achievement! This is a compelling but extremely difficult musical composition. When you consider it was performed here with the equivalent of a high school band and the vocalist came in and did it when she was only days away from delivering her baby it makes it even amazing. When I first heard this song at the time of the Brazilian Olympics I didn’t particularly like it but it is amazing has a powerful message and haunts you, in a good sort of way. I have listened to other renditions and this one is very, very good.

This is the most substantial work by the Sant Andreu Jazz Band to date. Primary credit must go to Director Joan Chamorro for creating the band and having the confidence to undertake this important piece and then to Joan Monne for the brilliant and dramatic arrangement but all of the orchestra from the senior former members to the youngest recruits have brought their utmost concentration (I have never seen Alba A look so serious) and best playing. At the end they are obviously and justifiably delighted with what they have achieved.

Every now and then an SAJB video slips by me, as this one did. But that makes the day I find it a great day! To say this is a complicated piece (for everyone) is a bit of an understatement. But the band pulls it off without a hitch. Major props to Andrea, of course, but also to Joan Monné for another wonderful arrangement, and to Joan C. for having the vision and perseverance to pull this off. I didn't know the song, so I did some research on it. There is a great piece in Wikipedia about it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constru%C3%A7%C3%A3o_(song) I recommend reading it. It is a complex composition in many respects (specially including the lyrics), and tells a rather tragic story. It was selected by Rolling Stone magazine as the "greatest Brazilian song of all time", and was used in the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Thank you all for doing this!

This is from the live-stream of the concert at the 7th Jazzing Festival in September. The whole concert was outstanding, but seeing this as a stand alone clip takes it to a new level for me. I think it was Andrea's last performance before she took temporary leave (we hope) to become a mum!

There is a lot to hear such as chaos, speed and finally he is gone (lyrically). I too am delighted to see the new faces in SAJB and they did well along with all the familiar players we all know. My first reaction-WOW, who arranged this? Thanks Joan Monne!! This is totally new to me, never heard it until 6:00 am today. There is a lot to hear such as chaos, speed and finally he is gone (lyrically).
