DIY Travel Trailer Battery Lock - How to build

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 18 сер 2024
  • Today I'm building the first component of the 12V system for the DIY Travel Trailer Project.... a lockable battery holder! It will secure the RV lithium battery for travel as well as keep it safe from someone wanting to steal it. Similar to my coupler lock build, it uses a puck lock to secure the battery in the holder frame.
Please let me know if have any questions! Thanks for watching!

I know you already installed the battery on the trailer, but as a travel nurse I had my batteries (4) stolen from my travel trailer 3 years ago from the side compartment while I was gone for the day riding my ATV at a state park. When i bought new batteries I followed an idea another RV'r told me he did from his batteries being stolen by installing them on the truck. I bought 200AH of the battle born lithium batteries and I welded up brackets for them and installed them under the bed of my truck to the frame rails. Then ran welding wire to an Anderson connector. I also installed a DC to DC charger on a relay that allows me to run the truck as a generator now instead of a portable generator. So i pull up next to my RV and plug the anderson connector form the trailer pigtail to the truck and it gives the RV power, when i am out driving it keeps the batteries topped off and solar on the RV still is able to charge the batteries when connected. I did away with my portable generator and found out my vehicle if I remote start it via the Key FOB or Chevy App (2016 Chevy Colorado 2.8L diesel), it is unable to be driven at all, but if i stick a brick on the brake pedal it prevents the truck from timing out and shutting back off after 10 minutes, allowing me to run it as long as i want in that semi-started mode. I get plenty of power from the truck to maintains the batteries when i need generator power.

Very cool Joe. 300-400 Watts of Solar and you're good. That should give enough power for some LED's a 12V cooler and a 12V fan. I guess you could get a 500 volt inverter to be used sparingly. You thought about to buy or make one of those warm water shower tubes that mount on the roof of a van or small trailer? Some 8" pvc pipes caped both ends with some caps or holes for hooking a sink sprayer like on a sink. Paint it black attached to some roof rack rails and you got about 10 gallons of warm water for bathing.

Great video. I'm in the process of going down the rabbit hole of doing a cargo trailer to camper conversion. I'm running 400 AH of SLA AGM batteries and am mounting them between the axles below the floor - so I'm building a custom battery rack...can't wait to see your next few videos on the 12v stuff. One thing you might want to check out is a GPS tracker - I'm considering hiding one in the frame of my trailer so if it finds a new home, I'll be able to see (along with the police) where it decided to move to.

And you're not paranoid thinking battery theft. Last spring here there were dozens of reports from people who went to get the RV ready for the season and they were all missing the batteries. That's all the thieves took. Generally easy to get at, very portable, super easy to sell, and very desirable by many for their RVs and solar projects.
Looking forward to the security measures for your solar panel(s) :-D
Unless you're just going unmounted and keeping it inside when not present to watch it. Lots of positives going that way instead of fixed on roof. Able to aim at sun and adjust. Park in shade with solar in sun. Keeps it from walking away ;-) Keeps it from getting weathered and dirty when you're not needing it. And more.
Also looking forward to the actual field test :-D
    Have a great day !

I think your cooler is 65W, which would draw 5.4Amps at 12V. Even if it runs only 10% of the time, your 100Amp-hour battery would be at 45% after a 100hr (4 day) camping trip from only the cooler draw.
Maybe the cooler runs less than 10% of the time? Maybe (likely) I am missing something else?

Frustration and lost time are costs people don't appreciate until it's too late, because they don't come with a price tag, even so It can hurt more than money. Being cheap costs more because lowest price items tend to be unreliable and the money spent buying replacements will out strip any initial savings. The same principle applies to anti theft protection as well. Any smart thief will look at that system and think, "there's always free cheese in a mouse trap." and walk away. Unfortunately smart thief is a oxymoron.

  • @dorvinion

Maybe you've already considered this but if I were intent on defeating your battery lock, the hinge looks to be the weak spot.
Grind off the pin, pop it out and then give it a good solid pull to bend it back.
The extra 3/16 of strap would certainly make it a little harder to do that, but the flat stuff isn't exactly at its strongest in that direction.
    Just something to think about.

      Doesn't matter.
The lead can be sold to a recycler, so there is a demand.
We just had two batteries stolen off of our new (to us) flatbed truck. They were just out in the open similar to an RV setup.
Coincidentally, they were rather old and we were looking to replace them anyway, so the loss there was minimal.
However we lost one of the parallel jumpers, (surprised they didn't take both because they're mostly copper) and the hardware that keeps the batteries clamped in place.

if you are in a cold climate, then having a lithium battery in outside box might harm the battery, especially if there if no low temp cut off. Lithium gets damages if trying to charge below 32 degree F. I think the relion batteries do have low temp shut off to protect them, and maybe some relions might have internal heaters for low temp operation, but most brands do not have that and one can build ones own heating pad system. If there is no heater in low temp below 32 degree, you would not charge the battery even if parked in full sun if the cut off is working. if there is a heater that of course uses some energy so you need wattage solar system to make up for that energy loss.

Great video; love the trailer build.
I may have missed it, but at 5:55 you have rubber gaskets under the steel tabs to
prevent contact with the aluminum box, but no gasket under center tab?

Pretty sure tjey're for shock absorption not electrical insulation.

@@kirkc9643 They were for dissimilar metal contact causing corrosion. He even states so. Aluminum and steel dont play well together.

Hammer yes they are there mostly for shock and dissimilar metal contact. The middle tab isn’t as bends down slightly so the bolt head doesn’t ‘bang’ into the battery when traveling. A little contact is okay. Just don’t want a lot of steel aluminum contact over a large surface.😀👍

Hi 👋 thanks for the reply I would have never guessed but I love your videos I watch them all the time I’m from Louisiana and I’ve built rain catch system using solar and a dc pump for power and we get plenty of rain here so I use it to water garden and live stock I have a filter system on it actually 3 so I tested it it reads 2 ppm the one coming out my residential faucet read 189 ppm scary how much chemicals they put in it thanks for sharing your videos 👍
