Is it about the misuse of election funds to pay her off? No, the doj said there was no crime? No and hush money payments aren't on their face illegal unless they are falsified in business records and disguised as business expenses to interfere with a federal election. Trump has every right to swear in and take the stand and explain these business expenses, however his legal team has claimed that none of this exists which has completely opened the door for cross examination on everything.

If he was supporting Trump then why was he recording the conversation secretly? It looks more like blackmail when you watch the tapes, Trump is asking for advice and Cohen is telling him what to do.
Its not illegal to pay for a NDA. And it was actually paid by the Trump organization not the Trump campaign. If Trumps campaign had paid, Trump would have been imprached and locked up already. FEC already looked into it and found that Cohen (who came up with scheme) made a personal campaign contribution. If Cohen would have just paid cash instead of taking out a loan on his house, he wouldnt have gotten in trouble for campaign violations because its not illegal to squash unflattering stories with NDAs. And the actual recording shows that Trump said he would pay cash and was surprised when Cohen mentioned financing.

It’s a felony - and the statute of limitations is five years. The clock started on Trump when Cohen was charged.
Its 34 felony charges for hush money payments, falsified in business records, fraudulently disguised as business expenses for the purpose of interfering with a federal election. Even if you were right the statute if limitations can be paused for a number of reasons. Its called tolling and its often employed when people need more time to pursue a legal action
