Hi! New to your channel. I'm married, own my home outright, and don't live in my car, BUT I have outfitted my KIA Sorento to live in. Why, you might ask? I'm a big fan of the outdoors and sometimes like to go camping without my husband or a big tent. lol
My favorite purchases for this were a 12v fridge/freezer, a Jackery & solar panels. I also devised a shower/toilet room between the front & back passenger doors with shower curtains & magnets. I can go where there's any lake & paddleboard to my hearts content! I'll be 77 next month & my health is perfect. I only eat meat & eggs. You're a brave woman to be doing what you're doing. ❤

Currently camping out in my truck in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where the weather is fairly cool. I just spent two weeks in Montana, and before that, I drove along the Oregon and Washington coasts and took pictures, and I'm hoping to go on a cruise in a few months. "Homeless" indicates those people would rather have a sticks and bricks home. Not necessarily. Even for those who don't have a car to sleep in, they often choose to stay on the street, even when offered shelter. People get used to their situation, regardless of what it is. They find ways to manage, and storage facilities will probably be one of the fastest growing businesses around. That, and vans of various sizes.

After 14 years of living in cars, vans, and even outdoors, I started a business, and rented a small room for the last 28 years. Sometimes I look back at the freedom I had living in cars and vans, and wonder if I made the right choice to take on so many responsibilities and financial obligations, but living in an apartment also has a lot of benefits, such as running water, a bathroom, being able to have visitors customers or guests, and I no longer have the police knocking at my door, and telling me to move on.

I want to thank you for your words of inspiration for living in a car.
I too will be living in my Ford EcoSport, a tiny subcompact SUV, for one year on August 16th. I retired with no savings at 65.6 and found myself destitute waiting for my SS checks. I had no choice but to move into my car.
There are good days and bad. Right now they are "bad", meaning, depression wise.
Many days I feel like such a LOSER living in a car! Coming from a huge 2 bath, 2 bed apt with a balcony and many cats (that I had to give up). My heart still breaks for them.
I don't travel because I cannot afford to travel. I can't save a single dime living this way! I'm always completely broke 2 to 3 weeks before my next SS check. All my bills take most of my check. Gasoline is so expensive and it's so hot. Many days I'm sitting in my car using up precious gasoline to stay cool.
It was 112 degrees yesterday here in West Texas.
I do have a gym membership but am having problems with the people who work there. I stupidly told one of them I was a "nomad" when signing up and now they all know and they watch me like a hawk, as if I'm some kind of drug addicted criminal. They call the cops on me if my car is in the parking lot after a couple of hours. God forbid I sleep in the lot of a 24 hr "Y"!
I can't find anywhere to go to just relax without someone calling the police. The only place I can be without harassment is the small county park where they have a free camp site for about 6 RV's. At night I have to go late and get out before 5:15am because campers can only stay for 3 days per month. I'm there every night so I can't be found out. Every morning there's a guy who comes by on a tractor that picks up golf balls. There's a small golf course here, and he started noticing me at 5:30am. Driving right past me, going out of his way to see this 'homeless" person living in her car in the park. Because of it, I'm now getting out of there at 5:15am.
I'm so tired. It's too hot to sleep in the car during the day. There's nowhere to go. It's such a hard life.
I find this life so awful and lonely! Expensive as all hell too! it also reveals the complete apathy and inhumane nastiness of people. All of them!!
In retrospect, I also could not stand living in an apartment. It gave me PTSD over the years due to disgusting violent neighbors!
I would find myself staring at the TV or phone the entire weekend, never moving from my armchair except to eat or feed the cats.
I was also very depressed and despondent until I went back to work on Monday. Apartment living can be hell and outrageously expensive!
I have no friends, and family disowned me 25 years ago, so I'm a 67 year old woman who gave up everything and who has nothing or nobody, and I'm living in a car!! Tell me that's not pathetic!!
    Always broke!
Nevertheless, I do relish the freedom and the beauty of nature in this park.
But I do not like having to use the filthy public restrooms to wash my face and brush my teeth on the days I don't go to the gym.
I have an appointment with the Housing Authority on July 16th to see if I can get help with paying rent. But I'm not even sure I want to go back to sitting within those 4 walls again!
I'm very confused about it because I hated the isolation and despondency of apartment living. The shitty neighbors above and below.
I also hated having to clean. It's such a bother and can be so difficult. Cleaning was SOMETHING I DETESTED! So it's a plus I no longer have to do that!
So I'm just not sure where happiness lies anymore. I'm sure if I had a companion. A friend, or wonderful hobby that also made me money, I might be happier whether I'm in a car or apartment. But tbh, if I can find an apartment that is cheap enough and the government helps me with rent, I believe I'll choose apartment again, no doubt. This car life is just too difficult (notice my handle!) hard, and expensive!
I'm tired of police chasing me and treating me like I'm the lowest lowlife.
That is the perception people take of you when you live this way, I've found, it's making me feel like a lowlife too now.
However, Best of luck to you and be safe! thanks again.

It’s crazy!! I seen a post about a 1 bedroom for $1725 n mentioned how that’s expensive everyone else said it’s affordable?? Like too who!!?? Problem is ppl don’t even mind paying high rent so landlords shrug their shoulders and keep raising the rent because ppl will pay anything for a tiny space to live

Yes, I completely agree with you about all of this, but have not found a job that could provide for me on the road. Yes the day I can find this I am doing exactly what you’re doing. Also, where do you stay at night? I’ve often thought about, staying at harvest host, but they don’t allow people to sleep in their vehicles. So I just would like to know where you find places to stay when you’re traveling across the country. Thanks so much really enjoy your videos. You are very inspirational. !

When I'm on the road, my top spot (in the west and midwest) is a rest stop - free, simple, has bathrooms. Sometimes I stay at walmart (but not every one can allow because of local laws or the parking lot owner rules) or at a random spot I find on ioverlander

You are living my dream really. I lost my job and have been unemployed for five months. Just got a contract job, but I am behind on nearly everything and it will take a moment to catch up, rent is just criminal really. I need to thin of how I could make this work for me, as the car I currently have is tiny. It’s just me and two cats that will be with me too. I know this could work, and like you I want to travel. I want to be in nature and hear birds not traffic. It’s too congested with people where I live currently. I hate being at the mercy of leases and rent and such. I just need to start researching on how to do this with my 2 cats.
In 2015, I donated/sold about 97% of my possessions and headed far north for almost 5 years. What I had was what would fit in my VW bug. I rented furnished places and moved 3 times there, due to ignorant landlords etc. I truly love the idea of always having my home with me. Thank you for realistically showing me it can be done!

@@ThatRedhedd lol took me a minute to get the context 😂 one of mine wears a harness and leash but has done so since he was a kitten. My other kitty who was grown when I got him is not happy with a harness on and adding the leash may add to temporary "paralysis" 😸 but I do put it on now and then, and encourage him to watch his brother wearing it and going outside. 🙄🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Having them with me in my conversion van is just the best. Yesterday I got them both outside in a collapsible crate! That was best for the guy who won't take to a leash. 😻

Yes . Good for you woman .
It doesn't have to be "traumatic" does it ?
You have the right attitude with what it takes to facing adversity in that , you (and I did exactly the same thinking with it ) count your blessings, use it to your advantage, stay positive, make it as homely comfortable as you can in your set up arrangement , and overall , embrace the silver lining aspects to it .
    The mobility.
    Travel.
Not a slave to unscrupulous landlord or tenancy obligations.
Keeping yourself safe with being smart about it .
Utilising family and friends for reprieve from it , sometimes but not too often .
Keeping up with your car maintenance (crucial crucial that one) and that one actually virtually converts one into becoming a mechanic so you learn skills .
Like , I totally relate and understand where you are coming from IF you are young especially.
BUT I do not expect over sixties , to have to do it .
I want senior women, in nice decent homes .
Thankyou for sharing your thoughts .

You clearly enjoy good mental health. Although I live in a house with relatives I own a Subaru Forester as well and feel that I am ready to go should circumstances dictate that I become a long term camper. To me RVs are grotesque, get hideous mileage, and are clearly for people who are allergic to camping. I own a variety of tents most of which have lots of headroom and will accommodate multiple heavy duty cots so I’m not on the ground. Plus I could take my Forester on the Alaska state ferry system to go camping in the panhandle of Alaska or even build a foam core ferro-cement 32’ Voyageur canoe with perhaps a tent in the middle to cruise around on float. There’s no point in getting all despondent and apocalyptic about not needing a house all of the time. But I spent nearly a year sleeping on the ground in tiny 3 man tents at two of the youth camps on Lake Temagami, Ontario, Canada or Northwoods [Cleveland YMCA] and Keewaydin, where Grey Owl himself once guided. So yes, sleeping on the ground is doable but luxury camping need not depend on towing an Airstream or whatever.
