    Why are they holding on to data of former customers? Especially if it's SS numbers. This should be illegal.

    I have a serious question: I've come to the logical conclusion that my name, SSN, DOB, etc., has been stolen many times. Yours have too. Dozens, maybe hundreds of times. How many times does the same information need to be stolen? It's an attention grabber in the news when this happens, but the horse has already left the barn, and keeps leaving that barn. I do have my credit reports frozen, and only unfreeze them when applying for credit. That only helps with a tiny part of the problem. The scam emails, texts, phone calls, hacking, etc., has got out of hand. I don't believe anything I'm contacted about anymore.

    About 20 to 25 years ago, I had an AT&T land line. I did not receive a notice from AT&T but instead, I received an alert yesterday from a credit monitoring service. My question is: Why do they hold on to former customers'private information (apparently) forever?

  • @privacyvalued4134
    @privacyvalued4134 Місяць тому +19

    Yeah, so putting people's identities behind Social Security Numbers (SSNs) and tying their entire lives to that insecure number is and was always a terrible idea. The SSN should be used exclusively by the Federal Government for...collecting Social Security. Everyone else? Time to come up with a vastly different strategy. I recommend issuing private keys on personal HSMs and start using PKI for identity. If someone steals the public key, so what? Public keys are useless without the private key. And public keys are also useless outside of the context for which they are established. Problem solved.

    • @damham5689
      @damham5689 Місяць тому +9

      I still have my original Social Security card that was issues to me in 1964. In big bold print along the bottom of the card is clearly reads "Not To Be Used For Identification". I have no idea why they dropped that. Now its commonly used as an ID and our ssn links us to everything.

    • @zuperdee
      @zuperdee Місяць тому +5

      The problem is: The U.S. government ITSELF really started the problem the moment they started using the SSN as our personal taxpayer IDs on official IRS forms, which in turn led to companies having to collect their employee SSNs for things like tax withholding purposes. Banks also legally have to collect SSNs for things like interest income reporting. Things only grew from there over the years and decades as the need for a personal UUID grew-for example, with credit reporting agencies, etc., and thus the SSN gradually became the de-facto go-to standard, since it was the closest thing to an individual UUID that they already had, almost like the path of least resistance, and things like HSM and PKI hadn’t been invented yet. In many places, one can make up their own number instead of using their SSN, but the trouble is: In the absence of an explicit policy being stated upfront, how does one know for sure when they do and don’t have to use their SSN? In theory, what you propose could work, but you CANNOT just propose, adopt, and then implement such an enormous policy shift like this overnight, and there are BOUND to be disagreements about who’s to pay for this massive shift, be it government (meaning us, the taxpayers), business (meaning all of their customers), or a combination thereof, and HOW they’ll all pay for it. In a democracy, you CANNOT simply declare “Big business / Government/ People should pay for it,” and expect that to be the end of it. That only works in a dictatorship like Russia or China.

    Over the weekend, i received a letter from Prudential Insurance that they had a data breach. I'm an ATT customer, so that's another data breach.
    My city, Sacramento, California, says I now am *required* to open an account to pay my dog's annual license fee of $10. I'm supposed to open an account and provide personal info to pay $10 *once a year* . But, of course, it's a "secure site" so no worries! And, paying online means the money goes through some company where? Well, it doesn't pay local people who would then spend some of that money locally.

Even if the ss number is needed AT&T should not hold on to this for life.... If a company choses to hold on to information like social security number they should face financial ruin in fines when the breech the public trust...

    This has caused multiple attempts to pull large sums from a friend's bank acct. They've printed what looks to be cashiers checks with fhe friend's name AND signature on it, for amounts from $500 up to the exact amout of her last paycheck, and her bank paid it!!!
    So far, there have been attempts as large as $10k via acct/routing numbers, totalling close to $50k. Obviously, someone had/has access to her bank account thanks to this, and oddly, she just left ATT in April! She's having to close the bank acct totally tomorrow, after having it for decades. Its a lazy institution when "don't let ANY wire transfers OR checks of ANY KIND go through, we don't use em!" won't sink in or be deployable. How deplorable, oddly. 😂
