- When it comes to picking out your torches here are a few suggestions and some things to keep in mind. I run Victor torches because the parts to replace are easy to find, they are incredably tough torches and the tips are easy to find in most welding supply stores. Also when it comes to buying your bevel machines there are a few things to take in to account.

You are really awesome for doing these videos. I've welded my whole life. Never pipelined (never practiced enough) but always had a hankering to. But all of these detailed tips and lessons cross many other fields of welding (tools and prep). This is stuff most people have to learn the hard way, IF they even ever do. You should be getting paid good for this sort of thing. I appreciate your time very much and I hope some newbies do too. Many folks aren't going to totally understand just how much knowledge you are spreading for free. Thanks mucho!

I recently switched to Smith. US made still I like the oxygen control knob being inline with the torch. Plus for me the more weight the better helps with the old guy shakes. Not a pipe liner just a farm mechanic but do weld lots of mainline. I still use an old Lincoln lincwelder 225 built in 1962. Hell it 3 years older than me. Still welds better than my miller 250. Subscribed.. Im getting ready to go to school for welding. Triangle Tech, in Dubois PA, it's 16 months and you get an associates degree, AST I belive it's called Associates Of Specialized Technology, they go through the entire process of Welding, Pipeline welding blueprints torches. Pretty much all the stuff you need to know. Hopefully I can get back working on the pipeline. I workedfor General Pipeline Construction outta Amma, WV. I was a laborer worked with lowering the pipe to putting in the crutches, gping all of that. Then I went to the environmental side of it. Putting in silt sock and silt fence all on the lower end of e right away.. There were some streams that required some really technical environmental work.. I made really good money working with them. Enjoyed the work and the people I worked with. It was a really close crew alot of family members brothers fathers and so on. I love traveling and making money.. So hopefully it will all work out for me. Maybe I'll see you on the right away sometime. I really like your videos very informal from the small details to the more complex ones. You do a great job on explaining things. I'm looking forward to wathing more videos from you. If you have any suggestions or ideas about the school or anything please let me know. Thank You!!!

I have a couple of small Victors, a Smith Lifetime with the big rosebud, a very small Uniweld, a Purox track torch, and a couple of Harris' with the big rosebud. I have had my one Harris since about 1970 and I use it the most.You can get them with a pilot light which is real handy if you are working in a shop. Open all your torch valves wide open and adjust the torch at the regulator. Then it's either on pilot or flip the switch and it's ready to cut. Around the farm I have a couple on propane which is MUCH cheaper to use. I don't use the Smith any more because tips are too high; and the Purox tips are high and a lot harder to find. I like the Harris best because it is rounder and easier for me to hold.

I have used both of those victor torches and I personally love the journeyman sized torch even though I am a smaller guy I prefer the weight and the overall size of the journeyman torch. But then I have used the baby torch and I did like it but I mostly complained about the weight of the baby torch.

I bought a Harris torch kit for the shop, and got it all set up and went to use it, it kept making a "tink- tink-tink noise.
I took it apart, couldn't find anything wrong, no I'm not new to this, but will freely admit I don't know it all either.
Took it back to the welding supply,
Chickasha industrial, great people to deal with by the way,
they took it apart and checked the tip, guess what?
The damn thing came with a Propane tip on it!
my having never messed with propane cutting rigs and having never seen one didn't know the difference!
Replaced the tip for me no charge, working like a champ!
I'm 62YRS old, and STILL LEARNING NEW STUFF!
Never too old to learn, and you will NEVER know it all!

Just got victor baby torch, German torch, full tanks, hoses and regulators and all the yum yums for $$$500 that's called a blessing for me !!!! Unfortunately I had to buy it from a guy that refused to weld anything other then pipe and called it quites ....not my problem...I can weld everything . So I'll use it

Quick tip for cleaning hand held torch tip that gets fouled with slag instead of shutting down and getting out the tip cleaner pull the trigger with the torch lit and rub the tip on a piece of wood most of the time it works

Found a company on eBay to order barrels torchs from! They are out of canada and can be picked up for around $265.00. And they look and feel identical to a victor barrel! I have a shorty and a long barrel for under $600 brand new

Nice video I just picked up the big and baby torch with large oxy and acetylene tank from a welders wife the welder passed away 10 years ago and his wife held on to all of his stuff I got the whole Victor sets for 200 bucks. Thanks for the great video.

Question.....on welding leads what do you do when you get cuts in your welding lead just curious? I usually wrap it with electric tape
depending on how long the cut is, I use shrink tube, if it's very big I use that liquid tape, then gorilla tape.
holds much better than electrical tape as a rule.
I’ve got a set of “firepower” torches. I think they are made by victor but not sure. They were my dads. I think it’s about 30 years old!!

Most of what we do for hvac is a pro press fitting. But if you need to braze I would always choose Victor

Noticed you have leads looped. What is your idea between looped leads or roll up?
Ive heard and my father in law has rolled leads but everytime you have to run big rod you have to spool out most of the lead cause it wil get HOT HOT HOT!! hopefully thats what your asking is about Reels. ive always used looped leads in had wells with locking doors in my other bed.
Cleared it up. Welder already had reels on it but noticed cracks on leads close to reel where it never had been completely unspooled. Thanks
This is all good if your a pipe welder but hey get on some heavy equiptment welding an fabracation like bulldozer rakes or excavator buckets the big stuff,,which takes high strength welding an see if you are lost lol
Raymond Quave yeah preheats post heats insulation things like that? Fixed a lot of blades and track hoes. Couple ripper arms. It’s not that big a deal.
What do you think of the victor medalist 350. Will that last for a good while?

All Victor torches are equal in quality (the designs have barely changed since the 1930s which is a good thing) and both torches and regulators are easy to get overhauled or do yourself. The difference between Victor outfits is basically torch body (and cutting attachment to match) and cutting tip size. You can Google tip charts for which number size cut what range, but a 350 has plenty of capacity for most jobs. You can use any size torch with a given regulator if the regulator will flow what you need, and most folks don't max them out. If you don't destroy the torch it may outlive you. I have 1930/40/s Victor, Smith, Harris, Purox, Oxweld and Linde torches still on the original seals which passed nitrogen pressure testing (never high pressure test with acetylene or oxygen!) with no leaks or minimal seepage at the cutting oxygen valve which wasn't enough to matter. I just made up a Y-hose from parts so I put nitrogen to both fittings at once. You can save a lot of money buying tips, parts and welding consumables online. I stock up in advance. Visit the Weldingweb forums for tons of useful OA/OP torch info. Avoid cheap Asian mystery regulators and torches. I don't resell them and if they show up in a lot I smash then scrap them. I rank Smith higher in quality than Victor, and all their Lifetime torches are US made, but in the field Victor is a compatible standard you can support anywhere. Harris are about equal to Victor and you can get their tips most anywhere too. Tips are like toilet paper and I don't buy that one at a time either.

All you need to change is the tip. Propane tips are two piece and the oxy-act tips are one piece. I use propane around the farm because it is so much cheaper to run.
That's why I use it because it's cheap. I can cut up to 3inch plate with it.

How long do you think it would take to pull everything out of your tool boxes and at least name every tool, maybe not go into crazy detail but just say the name so people can look into certain tools. I always thought about that because when I first started welding I remember cleaning the shop truck out and having so many questions my boss ended up going over every tool. Plus you’ll prob find some funky stuff all the way at the bottom of them boxes!! Or maybe a video on the stuff that never comes off the truck! Also what happen to the snow? My brothers last day in CO it was snowing and now it’s back up in the 60’s n 70’s!!

We called the bent tips gouging tips
we call them washing tips, used to wash off rivet head's, or bolts.
We call it a scarfing tip
bent tips?. i wasn't a pipe liner but we called them scarfing tips for scarfing out old welds and such. new cool tools you guys get to play with.

@@grantimusmccarthy9016 geographical terms i guess. the word Gouge was never used, Scarf was. i watched another welder video where he was talking about having "Hoosier Poles" on his welding truck. i'm like what the hell are those? he showed a pic. and they were Gin poles or more commonly known as "OKIE" poles here on the West Coast. haven't seen those used in the patch since the late 70s or early 80s. here everyone has a venturo crane or some sort of truck mounted hydro crane.

Since all the important welding torch patents expired before most folks reading this were born, good "less famous" brands like Uniweld and Flame Tech made their torches to take common tips. Flame Tech take Victor tips and Uniweld have a mix of designs taking Harris and Victor tips. Best way to have more torches and regulators then you need for cheap is scarf up leakers and damaged regulators (usually the nipple or guages break which are cheap and get replaced on a rebuild anyway) and have 'em rebuilt (regulators) or throw a kit in the torch (Victors are easy). I rank Uniweld equal to Victor. I haven't had any Flame Techs on my bench but they've been around a while.
Running a certain brand because it's popular or your LWS has parts is't a good reason for picking the brand. Victor production was moved to Mexico several years ago, and while Vitcor was never top of the line the old US made product was decent. The Mexican Victors ain't what they used to be. And don't even think about the Chinese clones. Total garbage.
