i just bought a 2005 j3 kitten brand new just completed build, did you make part 103 weight with 277 engine? i have 447 engine, I know mine doesn't make weight. must take you 300ft to lift off and 400fpm (or less) climb tops? thanks for posting whats little of info on j3 kitten. any known issues to look for on these aircraft, hopefully you nothing but good thins to say about aircraft, look forward to hearing form you.
Mine makes weight. You are correct, with the 277 the performance is not great. On really hot days, I have had that weird "hair standing up on the back of your neck" feeling when takeoff seems to take forever. Nudging back on the stick makes you go slower and climb less. Relaxing the stick lets you go faster and you start to climb. Feels like the service ceiling is right near sea level. Maybe I need to buy a better prop. I still have trouble making enough power.
This out at Byron? I've been wanting to see one of these for a while now since I'm trying to decide on an ultralight to buy or build. I'd love to see it in person.
I have not sorted out all the instruments yet. CHT / EGT remains a problem, so I am doing only short flights at this time. It's generally in the mid 60s when I fly, and I weigh 210 with the leather jacket and handheld. By watching the videos and using Google Earth to measure, it looks like wheels up in around 400 feet from a rolling start. No VSI yet, but I would guess 300fpm at cruise climb. I have been thinking about getting CloudAhoy once everything is working right so I can extract data more easily. Worked well for me in the past. Level cruise is about 65mph. I am pleased with the performance and expect better fuel economy and range - longer flights than with one of the larger and heavier engines. Curedcomposites has some good data on his HiMax pages.
Nice trip around area.
Nice landing
Awesome vid thanks for posting

Close - it's at Rio Vista - o88. I should be there this Saturday. Windy, so I probably won't fly.
Second Saturdays 10:30 EAA chapter meeting. Drop in any time.
Beautiful flight!) Tell me what kind of thrust can be removed from this motor? what is your gearbox? what is the gear ratio?
165 lbs static. Rotax 277 with model A gearbox 2.58 ratio. Sorry, I missed the YT email about your questions.

Is the Kitten J3 an FAA Part 103 compliant Ultralight?
Yes. Kits were made by Hipps until about 10 years ago.
@@willsmith4950 do they still make those J3 Kitten's as a kit or possibly and hopefully completely finished aircraft?
What kind of performance are you getting with the277?
