Nice mower. I like the larger rear wheels (gives one leverage when raising the front end to maneuver it around obstacles). I like the sound of it. (The muffler sound seems normal to me). Thank you for making & posting this video.

I like that mower especially the fact it has auto choke on the engine

As long as that stuff keeps working, I love it too.

Same with my edger. I have a zip tie that I slide over the bailer to keep the engine running. It's got a throttle to control the speed and the blade stops rotating when I put the arm in the park position. I know not to put my hands or feet near the blade even when it's disengaged but common sense is not so common anymore. Like the saying goes, We should just remove the warning labels from products and let natural selection work it out.

Beautiful. If people weren't so sue-happy, natural selection would work it out.

I'm actually surprised it doesn't leave too much of a mess without the side being opened for the discharge, though maybe that's why it got bogged down a few times?

It's a mulching mower, so it cuts the grass, then sort of acts like a food processor and chops all that up into finer particles which are redeposited on the lawn. Just like a food processor, if it's filled beyond what it can comfortably handle, it doesn't do as good of a job and you end up with half-overdone, half-underdone stuff. With an underpowered food processor, yes, you can bog it down to the point where it also stalls, so that's exactly what happens. I think the fact that it has a sharp blade on it makes a considerable difference, there's not as much "chlorophyll spill".

Looks like it did a fine job. Good call on raising the deck another notch for your grass type. Not liking that ticking sound, but if it doesn't get any worse, I'm sure that's normal for modern equipment, and nothing to be overly concerned about. With any bit of care beyond what the BFDA is capable of, I'm sure it will serve you well for many seasons.
I guess 4 HP in 1982 vs. 4HP in 2024 are two different things. I never notice the '82 Briggs 4HP bogging down in higher grass. However, the 2003 Tecumseh 6.5 HP will bog down in high grass. I'm sure the 6.5 is getting a bit tired these days. It's got a ton of hours on it. New governor spring certainly improved performance though.
Might put a splash of Berryman's in the weed wacker gas tank. Carbonator could be a bit clogged up. Always gets mine starting easier. Sparkolator could be dirty, too.

I've heard numerous accounts that the sound is pretty much normal and just how they run. I'll still keep monitoring it. xjoe81x has the same engine on his mower and that's still running strong. I also bumped into my sister and her boyfriend today at the Memorial Day Parade and before you knew it, we went back to their house. In talking, I saw his mower, a bit earlier model but very similar engine, also been running well.
Oh yes, absolutely the horsetorque ratings changed. '82 4HP isn't the same as today. But, despite the lower engine power and considerably smaller engine size, they do OK for what they need to do. That doesn't make my old mower overpowered, it's just that was the minimum standard of quality back then when it was new. And of course those amounts dwindle each year.
One thing I did do on the old mower from time to time is tighten the head bolts, and I guarantee they were at least somewhat loose several times over the years.
As for the weedwacker, I had 2 problems. First of all, I re-read the book for it. I hit the primer 10 times. The book specifically states MORE THAN 10. Oooo-Kay then. 12 it is from now on. The other thing is I put gas in the tank. Probably from the same batch but it seemed to stay fresher in the gas can? What I can tell you is that after 12 hits on the primer, she starts in 6 pulls like always.

They all got that tick. It's the baffles muffler I believe. We will see how the plastic camshaft holds up in that one. Surprisingly enough the Chinese engine is superior to the American engine because it got a lot more metal and the major engine components like the camshaft is metal like how it should be.
All complaints aside, it seems to work well and I'm sure if you take care of it (unlike the dumb ass American consumer) it will probably be around for another 20 years.

12 years ago, I bought a generator that has a "Chonda" engine. It hasn't had many hours put on it as I really haven't needed it, but it runs absolutely flawlessly.
Most of my stuff isn't abused; when it's already beat up like the old mower, I don't even care about it, but otherwise I take care of my stuff. So far, this mower has been serving me quite well and I intend to keep it that way.
