The surface area of the ball in contact with the press jumps to probably hundreds or thousands of times when pressed, like what Agent said, becomes a giant heatsink.
the ball glowed red because it had reached that threshold but it just barely reached it. the ball itself was rapidly cooling even without the press. however, the heat traveling from the center could reach the surface much faster due to the press, which is why I assume it passed back from that threshold where it glowed faster than if it sat. just an educated guess. grilled chicken at my work cools much faster on thinner breast fillets than on the thicker ones.
it's all thermal dynamics. what's happened here is heat from the ball transferred to the metal of the press and the surface it was sitting on. because of how balls are designed, all of that energy was transferring from a point and everywhere else was transferring through the air which is a far less dense matter to transfer through. as the press smashed the ball more and more of the metal of the ball was put in contact with the metal of the press. So the fast moving and highly energized atoms of the ball were able to transfer that extra energy into the room temperature metal of the press. on top of that, the surface area was increased.
***** I've been married for a while and I can say, it has its perks... offset by a world of sorrow every now and then. If I was single, I'd be just as happy. More money for racecar parts, less complaining about how much I spend on my car and how much I love my car. But without the nagging, I'd probably be poor. Yin and Yang. Give and take... and give even more. Would I do it again? No. Was it worth it? Yes.
When the press makes contact, u can notice it gets slightly brighter but as the body flattens it gains the amount of surface area that makes contact with the steel press and dissipates heat rapidly through conduction.
2:00 This smoke can be highly allergenic; nickel and chromium oxides cause so called contact eczema. This is not the same as atopic eczema, and not the same as heavy metals poisoning. Stay healthy man! :)
Idea, don't you mean concept? You can only have an idea once, then after being used and proven to work it becomes a concept. Just like once a person had the idea to record themselves while playing games it became a basic concept that a lot of people use.
This was terrible, came here expecting a RHNB video, and the blowtorch did not make the satisfying pop when turned off, and the ball was yellow, not red
The only thing that I can think of is that the two flat areas on top and bottom have a larger surface area. So in theory it would transfer the heat faster.
its easy, air is a bad conductor of heat so the balls stay hot. when they are smashed between two steel rams the steel rams absorb a lot of heat since metals are good conductors of heat. for example put your hand in a freezer, the air feels cold right? but its bearable. now put your hand on a steel plate that you put in the freezer, your hand feels cold almost instantly. same concept.
It looked like the force of the press at a certain point cooled down the nickel.. but I cant speak to the science behind this.. anyone that can please explain.
phyak hue When it got flattened, the contact with the press got better (the surface got bigger)and it transfered its heat to the press. Metal is a way better heat conductor than air, so it happened fairly quickly. Hope this clears it up.
anyone else see a kitty at 5:41
+Apple Pie Yes, i see it)
That is cool but i think it looks more like a fox
Yeah 🐱
And a horse beside it
as a redhot ball vids guy - this really hurts me
Shots fired! carsandwater needs to burn a hydraulic press now
red hot press in nickel ball?
Came here to throw shade but this was probly the best possible comment.
+Brad Mcconnochie no more like redhot nickel ball hydraulic press
That must be the most beautiful yellow color i think i've ever seen.
indeed
Yeah...Eagle beak yellow...
Sivert Erstad If you lived life in the saddle with me, you'd understand.
+SouthwesternEagle the guy is of the exact same yellow color,if u have seen the movie u'll understand
p.s. i cant find my original comment
+SouthwesternEagle FREEDOM
Carsandwater is depressed.
+Kamuy1337 Hydraulic Press Channel is also depressed
Welcome to my Hydraulic Press laboratory where safety is number one priority
We hope you guys enjoyed the slomotion now please subscribe.
get out jake, you work for state farm. do something about it
Today, we shall press some Nickel Balls
*BOOM* Look at it, it's all crushed and flat
Wow!! thas so crasy. Whoa
Looks like a small sun :)
+peatear42 you took my comment :(
Corey Lampson hehe... sorry
+peatear42 It is a small sun. Both are emitting light from blackbody radiation which are the exact same spectrum.
IT TURNED TO A BLACK HOLE FROM PRESSURE
+aaron Jordan the ball went into nuclear CONFUSION hue
Hey guys today we have a nickel ball. Made from nickel...
And iron, and carbon, etc.
***** Buuuuut not completely.
I'm surprised how fast it cools off when crushed.
because the press is a giant heatsink
My guess is the hydraulic press is acting like a giant heat sink when it happens. The pressure means there are fewer gaps between the materials.
The surface area of the ball in contact with the press jumps to probably hundreds or thousands of times when pressed, like what Agent said, becomes a giant heatsink.
when the pressure is high it cools because the atoms are closer
+Transformers And Power Rangers Toy Reviews would be cool to see that on a wooden board then
5:26 was like my divorce settlement
Your torch doesn't do the gorgeous "pwip" when carsandwaters switch his torch off
because carsandwaters uses a propane blow torch as he's using a much different torch.
hydrox torch*
hehe, pwip
Ikr its depressing
I thought I was the only one who loved that
>mfw there's no pwip sound when the blowtorch turns off
What's a gnome child doing in a comment section like this?
I noticed that too, carsandwater jokes.
A plasma cutter doesn't make those sounds
rofl that's not a plasma cutter
It's Brian! Hey it's Brian!
I can hear Carsandwater's offended gasp from here.
same
Who is that and why do you say that?
128Gigabytes Its a channel known for melting random stuff using red hot nickel balls.
Did anyone else think that the ball looked like it was re entering the earths atmosphere
have you done any ice? maybe a big block of ice or an ice cube tray.
Check this video ua-cam.com/video/3N7gBoA9NCk/v-deo.html
I'm using your comment to make a joke because your comment was at the top and this is the only way anyone else will see it
It's hard to heat ice to red-hot.
+tibschris who wouldve known
Being ablative and all.
the ball glowed red because it had reached that threshold but it just barely reached it. the ball itself was rapidly cooling even without the press. however, the heat traveling from the center could reach the surface much faster due to the press, which is why I assume it passed back from that threshold where it glowed faster than if it sat. just an educated guess. grilled chicken at my work cools much faster on thinner breast fillets than on the thicker ones.

+Erasmus_Tycho thank you so much for the clarification! ♡
duh
Erasmus_Tycho absolutely correct i couldn't have said it better
i feel like this is what the sun would look like imploding
Try 7 balls then make a wish
it's over nine THOUSAAAANNNND!!!!!!!--
But does it blend?
You know what's more fun than one nickel ball? Two nickel balls

well said, my man.
When they are hot they look like Dragon balls! Anyone else?
Razor Phoenix yes
+carsandwater oh noo
this is not a challenge this is a war
I will never accept any RHNB video without carsandwater's iconic plop sound
+Pille1842 true. Legit the plop sound is like a jumpscare if you are new to the channel
When they get crushed and go from orange to silver, it reminds of the ending to the first Terminator.
Now do it again, but pour molten copper over it while you do it.
after being crushed they look like York pepper mint padys or the bottom of a baseball bat's handle
haha thats quite specific
Before being crushed, they looked like the sun
@5:35 it looks like 2 tiny suns releasing solar flares. Too cool!
Looks like the sun in time lapse.
The crossover episode we’ve all been waiting for
Goes out like the Terminator's eyes!
Yep, this is how MY blacksmith does it.
It actually looked quite delicious while it was being pressed.
Yeah you try to eat it
when he moves the nickel ball with the tools without wearing gloves
Red hot hydraulic press
I guess they're now really hot nickel patties.
Parts of this video needs the Terminator 2 end soundtrack
hydraulic press a hydraulic press
Classic ... Kappa
it has already been done
What's the point?
Isn't this just basic blacksmithing, ancestors are laughing at us right now
i am pretty sure we didnt have hydraulic press back than
Donald pump You dont need that much pressure to shape red hot metal
+AklRep it's just so people can see what happens
but this is VERY basic blacksmithing. apply pressure to hot soft metal it deforms. people should know what happens.
+AkujiMalice doesn't matter, people still wana see it rather they know what happens or not
at 2:28 i flashbacked to the first terminator movie ..when the press crushed Arnold's skull and the eye slowly went out ...lol
Cool video, but I wouldn't eat those pancakes!
Now we need red hot nickle ball vs Rube Goldberg Machine!
Press another press!
Press another press thats pressing another press thats pressing another press thats pressing another press........
Pressception
May cause black hole..
any one else imagine the sun during this video?
At 5:42 looks like a cat watching a horse.
The Amazing Horse
I don't see the horse I see something else
How did you see that
i see it too
Cole Watts I was bored and i paused it right on time. And it just seemed like a cat watching a horse
looks like the sun
Who else thought that that was 2 suns
Dont_hack_mepp Ya i
Dont_hack_mepp Ya no
looks like two dragon balls. awesome video
Carsandwater should put a RHNB on a hydraulic press.
😂😂😂 this was a diss video
1:56 that looks like the sun exploding as it's getting crushed
it wasn't hot enough.
dude who heated this thing?
the red part of the flame is always the hottest part of the flame...
it's like you squeezed the heat out of them...
When the press makes contact, u can notice it gets slightly brighter but as the body flattens it gains the amount of surface area that makes contact with the steel press and dissipates heat rapidly through conduction.
+ToothyGus
*jessie pink man voice* "yea mr.white science"
kinda unsatisfied that there wasn't anything like the lovely 'fwip' sound that occurs when you turn off propane torches....
wha~ did you hear something?
+javalin597 did u delete my commenr and then make it look likenyou were talking to yourself?
what? why would I...no I was playing along but, alrightythen
same
i thought it was a plasma torch
I don't like the way it was heated.
Why?
+Jason Neet
Not heated by a stationary blowtorch with the nickle ball on some nails nailed into a plank of wood.
Also now Piwp
+Solarius The Blaziken That noise is so satisfying
It still works.
HairyViking111
Its not the same, man
Anyone else love it when the shell (shell is probably the best way I could describe it) breaks? It just feels so satisfying...
Very cool colors. It looks like a little Sun.
that's what i was thinking
The world needs more hydraulic press channels. And more nickel ball channels.
2:00 This smoke can be highly allergenic; nickel and chromium oxides cause so called contact eczema. This is not the same as atopic eczema, and not the same as heavy metals poisoning. Stay healthy man! :)
why am I watching this at 3am?
+crszitamarshall, Because Your Watching It At 3 AM :P
+Damonlive783 He doesn't own watching it at 3AM...
Because you love waking up exhausted the next day
The question is, why is anybody watching it ever?
They look like the sun
you squeezed the red out of it
We have gone too deep.
why are all these hydraulic press channels russian?
because Russians tend to be very de-pressed.
Because they have a lot of heavy machinery, nothing better to do with it, and low safety standards.
Cause russians like to crush things
sweden
They're all owned by the hydraulic press manufacturer and you're secretly watching ads for their product
what kind of torch is this?
it's a plasma torch
+Hydraulic Power how hot is it
*****
check on wiki
+Smiley red hot
+Hydraulic Power where are you from ?
shoulda heated all 3 plates and pressed into 1
wontonnoodles23 I wad just about to say that
>Picks up red hot ball without gloves using metal wire
>"It's quite hot" He says wearing rubber-coated gloves
Definitely totally 100% safe
it's like crushing the sun ❤️
it looks like the sun
K A D E J A H . S H U N T E L how do we know what the sun looks like if our eyes aren't real
Great. Now you took the hydraulic press idea from hydraulic press channel, and the RHNB from carsandwater.
Is it a right to remain ignorant?
Idea, don't you mean concept?
You can only have an idea once, then after being used and proven to work it becomes a concept.
Just like once a person had the idea to record themselves while playing games it became a basic concept that a lot of people use.
This was terrible, came here expecting a RHNB video, and the blowtorch did not make the satisfying pop when turned off, and the ball was yellow, not red
much better camera angle thank you
Stack them, heat them, and crush them again.
+Jeff Palumbo Damascus balls! :)
There u have it a dragon ball
I wanna see if they can do
That to guko hulk
Or superman 😂😂😂😂
who else watches carsandwater?
me i was thinking RIP just now xd
is it car-sand-water or cars-and-water i still dont know
cars and water im pretty sure
or its a name carsan-d-water
me
that instant heat conduction though.... sweet video
It's just not the same if you don't dump the metal in a flower decorated bucket of water afterwards.
Yeah, and the torch didn't make the noise when turned off
I DIDNT KNOW LIGHTSABERS HAD BEEN INVENTED
Seriously though, this was crazy
Are the flakes that are coming off the squished ball the impurities in the metal?
Hypatia4242 Its rust.
Hypatia4242 its called scale
outside cools and hardens (becomes brittle compared to still red hot metal.)
That thing kills terminators
that's how you make a sun
and then we crashed the sun?
u made a sun pie
SO THIS IS WHAT IT'S LIKE WHEN WORLDS COLLIIIIIIIIIIIIDE.
hardcore man
+Donald Moses II This is why you gotta keep your worlds APARRRT!!!
Looks like a dragon ball. Now we know the secret and true power of the Blacksmiths
Do Hydraulic press vs ammonium nitrate
How are you going to make this video with out explaining the science behind why the metal cools down almost instantly. Come on.
It made more surface area contact the hydraulic press and metal conducts heat very well. Also its still very hot after it loses the glow.
It cools down very fast because by crushing it you are giving it much more surface area to spread it's heat into the steel it's touching.
I would assume that would be common sense.
Reminded me of a Dragon ball
for sure :O
Why are you not crediting +carsandwater :(
It looked like crushing the sun
The greatest battle since Honeybees vs. Hornets
Should have stacked them, reheated them and smashed them together.
what are hydrualic presses actually used for? besides crushing things to see what would happen
Why does the nickel blacken & cool so rapidly when under pressure? I would have expected it to get even hotter and glow brighter!
Yeah that's a little weird
I think the extended surface area contributes to heat dissipation through the press itself.
how nickels are made
Bs nearly 2 million views and only 25k subscribers and you disable the like/dislike ?
Shots Fired @ carsandwater....not cool bruh
Fret Millen explain what you Mean by that please, I've seen other comments but I'm unaware of what people mean
As someone with a nickel allergy, I find this video immensely satisfying.
Hope this clears it up.
phyak hue Thermal equilibrium? Might be
plus I think it was sped up when it was crushed.
Why didn't they fuse together?
That heat transfer though.
Right? Pretty awesome how it cools so rapidly as the contact area increases!
Probably one of the best examples of conduction > convection I've seen :p
will it be able to press them without the pre heating?
It's molten metal, it will bend
I miss that sound when you turn off the blowtorch
+Sifilitico Joe its not the redhotnickelball guy
carsandwater is his name
