      because the press is a giant heatsink

    • @MisterFanwank
      @MisterFanwank 8 років тому +12

      My guess is the hydraulic press is acting like a giant heat sink when it happens. The pressure means there are fewer gaps between the materials.

    • @aaronlin1508
      @aaronlin1508 8 років тому +7

      The surface area of the ball in contact with the press jumps to probably hundreds or thousands of times when pressed, like what Agent said, becomes a giant heatsink.

    the ball glowed red because it had reached that threshold but it just barely reached it. the ball itself was rapidly cooling even without the press. however, the heat traveling from the center could reach the surface much faster due to the press, which is why I assume it passed back from that threshold where it glowed faster than if it sat. just an educated guess. grilled chicken at my work cools much faster on thinner breast fillets than on the thicker ones.

      @jackcrackerman 8 років тому +3

      it's all thermal dynamics. what's happened here is heat from the ball transferred to the metal of the press and the surface it was sitting on. because of how balls are designed, all of that energy was transferring from a point and everywhere else was transferring through the air which is a far less dense matter to transfer through. as the press smashed the ball more and more of the metal of the ball was put in contact with the metal of the press. So the fast moving and highly energized atoms of the ball were able to transfer that extra energy into the room temperature metal of the press. on top of that, the surface area was increased.

      ***** I've been married for a while and I can say, it has its perks... offset by a world of sorrow every now and then. If I was single, I'd be just as happy. More money for racecar parts, less complaining about how much I spend on my car and how much I love my car. But without the nagging, I'd probably be poor. Yin and Yang. Give and take... and give even more. Would I do it again? No. Was it worth it? Yes.

      When the press makes contact, u can notice it gets slightly brighter but as the body flattens it gains the amount of surface area that makes contact with the steel press and dissipates heat rapidly through conduction.

      Idea, don't you mean concept?
      You can only have an idea once, then after being used and proven to work it becomes a concept.
      Just like once a person had the idea to record themselves while playing games it became a basic concept that a lot of people use.

    • @klooger28
      @klooger28 8 років тому +5

      It made more surface area contact the hydraulic press and metal conducts heat very well. Also its still very hot after it loses the glow.

    • @bucky13
      @bucky13 8 років тому +3

      It cools down very fast because by crushing it you are giving it much more surface area to spread it's heat into the steel it's touching.

    • @grooveclubhouse
      @grooveclubhouse 8 років тому +1

      The only thing that I can think of is that the two flat areas on top and bottom have a larger surface area. So in theory it would transfer the heat faster.

    • @grizzskoalcope
      @grizzskoalcope 8 років тому +3

      its easy, air is a bad conductor of heat so the balls stay hot. when they are smashed between two steel rams the steel rams absorb a lot of heat since metals are good conductors of heat. for example put your hand in a freezer, the air feels cold right? but its bearable. now put your hand on a steel plate that you put in the freezer, your hand feels cold almost instantly. same concept.

      phyak hue When it got flattened, the contact with the press got better (the surface got bigger)and it transfered its heat to the press. Metal is a way better heat conductor than air, so it happened fairly quickly. Hope this clears it up.
