Welcome to Jam Setup, the segment where I show you my process of preparing to jam on various pieces of electronic music gear. Today we're working with the J-6 and T-8, which for the most part is a fairly straightforward combination. However, it still requires you to be precise with your play button presses to get both devices perfectly matched up. Enjoy the video :)

The problem with using click sync and not midi sync: no start/stop command. The tempo will be the same, but you still need to press play on both at the same time. Best way to deal is to start one and then the other. It’s easier to get one finger in time at once that two (because our nervous system is weird)
Hello, although "sync" could be interesting in certain situations, the default method as told by many is via midi. This exact setup is my favorite everyday package for jamming especially when commuting. Also, midi program changes messages is really helpfull despite the lack of pattern chaining. From my experience i found that the J-6 should be master : this way you can change patterns on the T-8 (for variations) while the J-6 is running its own pattern.
Your videos are awesome, but I just have to chime in on this one. Use Midi as many have said above. Sync and start stop is not the main reason to use midi though. The main reason for using midi here is PROGRAM CHANGE, which is an awesome Volca slaying feature that really steps these devices up and over the Volcas. Once set with midi, you can change a pattern on one device and it changes it to the mirroring pattern on the other. GAME CHANGER :) Same cable, different holes. I tested the midi sync against the non-midi sync last night and the midi sync works perfect.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the sync has to use a lead with mono plugs.

Midi With Slave and Master Settings solves everything! And is stable 😊
I just use the MIDI cable and it works fine. I also only click the start button on the master device (J-6) and it all runs
Great video thank you. Would love to see a video like this only connecting both of these to say a 101 or verse lab or an MPC1. And or how to use with a daw setup. I play with my lil Roland’s but haven’t found a good way to integrate and connect them into a useable setup. There are definitely Not enough setup and connections videos for gear, so thank you 🙏

Been loving your videos and content, keep them coming! I recently got both but haven't synch them yet waiting the cables to come in, but why did you opt to not use the midi sync option? Do you find it works better or worse?
I had the same issue using the J6 with my Circuit Tracks.
I figured out (by accident 😂) that if you pre-press the play button on the J6 AND then it play on the tracks that it triggers both play buttons at the same time avoiding the issue of having to manually press both play buttons. Might work here as well.

For the sync the cable has to be mono, it's explained in the tutorial. Congratulations. Goodyear channel. 😊😊
Why not just sync up through midi?
The midi synch works perfectly! Tested it last night against the non-midi sync.
i am so used to midi sync that having to press two play buttons at the same time seems absolutely crazy to me? what am i missing here? i love this no PC setup but w/o sync it feels less than ideal?
Hi Mate and congratulations on your videos and contents. I'd like to get a couple of portable piece gears to sketch Ideas when I am on the go. I'd like to get the Volca Keys and t-8. Basically i like to play dark ambient, chill-out, slow edm. Do you honestly think J-6 is better than Wolca keys in combo with T-8. Honestly looking at your video about the T-8 I am not completely sure that even t-8 is a perfect match with my music as the bass is weird and I don't like a lot its tone... (too much acid style, is it possible to tune it into a more smooth sounds?) Many thanks I have seen all your videos until now. Great stuff!
Honestly it's a really hard question to answer without knowing you and your tastes super well. However, I don't think the J-6 and Volca Keys fill the same role at all. Think of the Volca Keys more of a lead synth, whereas the J-6 is all about chords. Hopefully that helps!
@@FreeBeat Yes, I was thinking more to Keys as I like much more ambients and Pads sounds for my music. J-6 can also play single tones I guess but it's a very good sequencer for chords and phrases and expect better integration with T-8. I will probably get Volca Keys first and then the t-8. if they do not work fine I'll add J-6 later on, either in addition or in place of Volca. Many thanks! Cheers
The T-8 seemed to be the master clock, but when you changed the speed on the j-8 it did change both
The T8 *is* syncing, its just that your button press timing was fractionally late so it synced to the next click
Hi Free Beat. Big fan of yours. I hope when you find the fix you let us know. I have been going through these unhappy accidents with these devices too. I tried hooking it up with other devices and they don't play well. It seems to be either playing double time as slave or 1/2 times when it's the master. There has to be a setting in the menu, but for the life of me, I cannot find it
Sounds like you need to change the sync clock beats per minute on the Aira Compact. I think it's 2. The speed will then be correct. My T-8 pairs fine with my Volcas after doing this.
Thx buddy. It worked. Also, Freebeat needs to use the MIDI sync and it works fine. No need to hit the play simultaneously - not really what sync was meant to do.
@@TheBrainvision Glad you got it working. Yes MIDI is the way to go if you want reliable start/stop. I actually use sync between my T-8 and Volcas and have no issues with timing.
I think you need to use the sync port on the top side, then get in to the menu and sync them set to auto!

I looked it up, Sync is Mono kabel, and the Midi is stereo!

If you are using sync, you need to use non-trs 3.5mm cable. But the best option for synching these two devices, as others have suggested, is to plug your trs cables into midi out on the master device and midi in on the other device.
Yeah it’s a kinda idiosyncratic in use for you too - it’s not only me! 😅 My Keystep 37 arrived today I’m learning and being entertained- I’ll keep watching

According to the manual, the "SYnC" menu is only for MIDI clock anyway, the sync-in port should always take precedence over that. Maybe the sync clock menu ("S.cLK") is set differently on the two? That being said, even Pocket Operators sync up better than these (for example, including start and stop)…
Pitty it doesn't default to looking for the sync in before starting like Pocket Operators :/
I use the drum machine always as master! You need to sync via midi not just the clock...
TRS cable midi out on the J-6 to midi in on the T-8 - Gives start/stop master to the J-6 - both start in perfect timing when play is pressed on just the J-6. Sync is a pain as it requires your timing skills :-)
One would think that when one hits play on the J6 it would start the 8 play. Is there no ability for clocks’ in and out to be set? In my mind and experience with MIDI, there has always been this option to trigger other devices. If this facility is not available on this range of music boxes I’ll be very disappointed. Roland would not omit this feature in my mind, but one never knows.
Try syncing from T8
Sucks you have to press them both at the same time. I've never had to do that with any of my gear. I just start or stop the master and the slave units start and stop along with it.
Using midi or sync? When using sync it's normal to have to press both at the same time as sync doesn't send start/stop commands.
Please make new jam videos once you decide to start connecting the midi ports instead of the sync ports ha ha ha 😉
Roland confused everyone. The thing is to USE TRS CABLE AND CONNECT DEVICES VIA MIDI IN /OUT - Everything will sync flawlessly

How is it still possible in 2020-on to a) buy two products designed to work together that don't really work together seamlessly?, and b) ACTUALLY MAKE SOME SYNTHS that just have a passable drum machine in them??!?!?!?!?!?

Learn to use your gear before making videos. There’s no reason anybody should waste their time watching someone learn. These come with manuals.
