I'd say that the GBA version is much more brutal. In that one as Vexen tries to warn Sora about Marluxia's trap, Axel jumps from behind and slices Vexen with his chakram. Vexen is then on his knees basically dying and begging for mercy. Axel standing right behind him gives his famous "goodbye" line and slices Vexen again with his chakram, Vexen then just drops dead and fades away. As a kid just imagining that in full 3D brought horror in my eyes, I was just thinking damn man Axel you cold blooded killer (I like Axel but I always get weirded out seeing his character from CoM and then seeing him literally everywhere else).

You know as much Kingdom Hearts is a clusterfuck, it has it own character stories in it that are pretty alright. The stories of Namine and Roxas who just want to be normal kids and have friends but being unable to because of reasons beyond their control is pretty sad and actually makes me feel emotions in a fucking Kingdom Hearts game. Too bad Nomura is more focused on Darkness and Belts.
Ok, can we all just appreciate the fact that this is the ONLY KH where Xehanort isnt the Antagonist? (with the exception of Ansem) Cuz seriously, Marluxia's role as the villain here is honestly satisfying.
Oh man, you were super right about that "KH1 then jumping to KH2 without playing CoM" confusion. I wasn't lucky enough to have GBA back then and only had a PS2, when that intro hit, I thought that intro was a showcase of the things I'll be battling ala little spoilers. Imagine my surprise when I got their Journal page and listed them all as fucking dead and wondered if I skipped some really big cutscene where Sora killed them all.
Actually, I was lucky. In middle school, I was walking around in a book fair and saw some of the KH mangas (that being just KH 2 and KH CoM) sitting on the shelves. I saw that there were only two books for KH: CoM and Sora looked like he did in the first game so I got them thinking it was a story based on something before KHII. The real reason I got them was to study up on how to draw more realistically because before that, I was just drawing stick figures and nothing to reference or study.
I thought COM was a weird shitty port of KH1 since all the commercials I saw just showed off kh1 worlds, some disney channel segment where they talked about it just showed sora fighting a fat heartless in agrabah, and the night cinematic with riku I assumed was a bonus hidden video i missed from KH1. so then I boot up Kh2 and see all this shit an I just know COM was important, as soon as roxas drops, as soon as the organization shows up I instantly knew I missed something. fortunately though the game's journal does a good enough job telling you what you missed if you're interested.
I started playing after re:don was released on ps2 in the US so I played kh 1 than slogged through Re:com and started playing kh2 when I got halfway through sora’s story because it was just so boring
I'm pretty sure that Nobodies can actually feel things, but are bullshited into thinking that their emotions are fake, because someone in charge told them so. It is revealed IN A LATER GAME
I never bought that whole "nobodies can't feel" thing. If they were pretending to have emotions they'd be bad at it, but their reactions are just way too realistic and come way too naturally. They don't have any awkward pauses where they have to stop and think about what emotion would be appropriate to the situation (although now that I think of it, that would actually have been pretty cool).
This is speculation, but nonetheless intriguing and in my opinion a decent way to explain why Sora acted the way he did before, during, and after Demyx's death. A while back I read somewhere that the reason Sora treats most of the Organization the way he does in KH2 for the majority of the game is because of Roxas' feelings towards the Organization. Roxas struggles to come to terms with it early on, and doesn't truly seem at peace until his boss fight in the World that Never Was. That frustration and anger towards the Organization is reflected on Sora in the form of heightened aggression towards them, which seems completely uncharacteristic of him unless you think of it in that light. Recall how after Sora kills Demyx, he seems completely fine with doing the same to another, going so far as to challenge them, which is deeply worrying to Donald and Goofy. After his fight with Roxas, Sora seems fine in comparison. I try to take this line of logic with a grain of salt, given the nuance of it compared to, *sniff sniff* "what's that smell? it's DARKNESS", but I can't help but feel that detail at the very least was intended.
Ah, sorry. The terminology is confusing and hard to memorize for me from the very start so I've never noticed that detail. Like... I'm a biology student, I can cope with complicated scientific words with Latin or Greek roots (or even actual Latin), but I can't wrap my mind around KH's basic lore ;-;
Clemps, my boi. I'll be honest: I haven't been watching your videos recently. I found you when you had just finished your Drakkengard 2 videos. You had only about 4k subs back then. I loved your videos and would watch them multiple times through in a row. They were great. But then I got, burned out I guess. This wasn't your fault I do it to myself all the time with things like food. But with the kingdom hearts series coming out, I got back in and finally got around to watching the videos I'd missed. I even gave your older videos a good rewatching. When you announced the Automata analysis, I got so excited that I went to your Patreon and immediatley pledged at the max level. (obligatory) OK, I believe you. Edit: About the awkward line delivery. Since this game was dubbed WAY after the fact, Square didn't invest in reanimating the lip flaps for English voices, so the actors and script writers had to work with the Japanese lip flaps.
The GBA version is honestly less of a drag to get through. The 2D pixel art just wooshes past you and and most worlds are over in about 10-20 minutes vs exploring whole 3D worlds that average around 20-30 minutes. Riku’s story is MUCH easier considering in the final world he has nothing but lv6 and up cards with all the 0 cards in the back of the deck. Just level Attack every time you can and just pour everything into HP.
I suspect the 'smell' thing might be a translation issue. Possibly being similar to a 'presence'? Because Zexion also mentions there are 2 new 'scents' in the castle
There's something genuinely...upsetting about his story. As he's disappearing, he comes to terms with his existence as nothing more than Vexen's experiment. Riku just tries to comfort him while admitting that he'll probably end up just like him.

Briandon Stark That's actually not true. If you look closely while playing, you'll notice that the cutscenes are pre-rendered in Re:CoM while in every other game they're in-engine. So they weren't actually able to re-do the mouth movements to suit new dialogue.
Man, I feel sorry for when our boy finishes covering all the Kingdom Hearts console games. 'Cause oh boy... Union Cross... What a fun way to gamble--I mean to learn more about the beginning of the Keyblade War. Dear god someone please save our souls.
Other than the fact that Union Cross is a PHONE GAME i honestly find it to be my favorite story so far in the series. In fact, im more hyped (storywise) for it than KH3. I know thats a bit of an unpopular opinion but hey I LOVE MY MIND GETTING FUCKED!!!

I remember playing this game when I was 8 years old. It was on my GBA and was the first exposure to the series that I had. I honestly liked it, though I didn't retain any of the story, and didn't know that it was a sequel until years later. Re: Chain of Memories is something I still need to get around to playing. Super fucking hype for the Analysis of Nier:Automata, that game struck a huge chord with me. I can't remember the last time I cried this hard at a game.
Chain of Memories has my favourite story out of all KH games. Mainly because it's one half of bad guys mindscrewing Sora, and another half of Riku having a full on character arc and development. And third half of irrelevant Disney shenanigans, but who gives a crap about that...

I agree. I would honestly like the game if it wasn't just a game filled with sandboxes of enemies. I actually like the combat system but the Disney worlds are just SUPER watered down versions of the ones from kh1.

My favorite Organization members are: Axel, Roxas, Demyx, and Vexen. Axel's voice actor Quinton Flynn and Vexen's voice actor Derek Stephen Prince are my fave performances.
Recently found the Clemps channel and am loving some of the older content! I figure I would add my two cents as well! Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on the Game Boy Advance was actually my FIRST Kingdom Hearts game (I didn't know about the series at the time). I loved it, and I was captivated by Namine and how she relates to Sora! I then played KH: 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts I & Kingdom Hearts II. I am now working on Birth By Sleep! The GBA version of Chain of Memories is still one of my favorites because I liked how well it told the story, and I've probably beaten it (and Reverse/Rebirth, which is Riku's story) at least 3 or 4 times. The PS2 version, Re: Chain of Memories, made several alterations to the gameplay that actually make it much harder for the player, giving the enemies unfair techniques and advantages. Marluxia's final form, which wasn't in the original GBA version, was really cool looking, but still unfair. My brother had a full-on rage quit in the fight against Zexion because he kept losing all of his cards! I would still recommend the original GBA version because while the pixel art may look strange to those used to the PS2 style (or PS3/PS4) graphics, it is much more fair to the player. The 2D fighting actually helps the player plan their strategy more effectively. In my opinion, the hardest fight in the GBA version of Chain of Memories is the fourth fight against the Riku Replica (after the 12th floor, Destiny Islands). You should have your 0 cards ready because of how many sleights he uses, but other than that, it's a good challenge, as is the second fight against Larxene, which occurs immediately after. Also, the original OST for the GBA version is really good, especially the tracks for Twilight Town and Destiny Islands. Well, that's my opinion on the game, and while I certainly can understand and respect the opinions of those who really can't stand the game, I hope some other people enjoyed the game too! I agree with Clemps though; the storyline with Namine is really good! I hope you all have a wonderful day! :)

You sir, are a made genius. To play this all the way through and come out with a interesting analysis of the game is more then to give you praise. I played this on GBA (Which I still own) and after completing never picked it up again. I it was along time before I came across another game that made me swear out loud so much.
Clemps your inclusion of Buff Riku made me cry from laughing. That was the best part of the video imo. Moving on I played the GBA version of Chains of Memories when I was younger and even I got tired of the game. After beating Riku's story I never touched the game again. My biggest issue with Chains of Memories was the card system especially in the overworld. Naminé and her scenes made the game enjoyable for me and if it wasn't for her I probably would have stopped playing. Good luck with Kingdom Hearts II that one will be a doozy for lore reasons and it's where things really start becoming complicated.
I love Namine. Nuff said on that Though I love Chain of Memories. The GBA version I got free from a classmate who needed help with Repliku. It was good even though I sucked so bad at it
Chain of Memories on the GBA was actually the first title in the series that I played, and I remember enjoying it immensely. The gameplay was serviceable, the characters memorable (with the exception of Zexion who, on multiple occasions since, I've forgotten even existed), the card theming never became grating as those types of things generally do after a while, and I agree that the whole Naminè subplot was easily the most interesting aspect of the game. I just wish it held up nearly as well in reality as it does in my nostalgia-tinted memories. KH2:FM has thoroughly *ruined* any chance of me ever enjoying Chain of Memories as much as I did when I was ten. And honestly, that's kind of disappointing. Growing up sucks :(
Yeah. We didn't get an English dub of Re: Chain Of Memories till AFTER KH2. Thus why Sora's voice is different. Also, Marluxia, Axel, Roxas, and Vexen are my favorite members of Organization 13.

The Nobodies even got their original bodies back and showed their true forms after they were ”killed” (god-damnit-how-hard-is-it-to-actually-kill-a-character-or-two). And tbh the only other thing about as messed up and complicated as the KH-plot pain train heading straight off a cliff into plot-hole-hell that I’ve come across in my lifetime, are Marilyn Manson lyrics. Deciphering MM’s lyrics religiously since I was 10 is the only reason I can still keep up with the KH-plot and didn’t even bat an eye when they went and added all the Realms and time travel and Prophecies. Fuck it, I’ve even seen tons of KH fanfiction written to fit the lyrics of MM. And oh boy, do they _fit_ like a full latex bodysuit!

Be me, be 10 years old. I was fortunate enough to own a Gameboy Advance SP and a PS2 at the time (both fantastic consoles). My older cousin showed me KH1, and I was hooked- never had I wanted a game so badly.. So one day, I ask my mom if she could pick me up Kingdom Hearts from Walmart while she was there. I scraped my savings jar and handed her all the money I had. (It was like, 32.50 or something like that) That night, she returns home in her van, as moms do, and I eagerly await her at the front door. "Did you get it did you get it?" I asked, my pulse at 120 bpm. And with a grin on her face, she hands me "Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories". I didn't even know this game existed. I was mortified. But it being a KH game, I was willing to give it a chance. With a smile on my face, I hugged her, thanked her, then locked myself in my room for the remainder of the evening. I booted up the game, and said to myself "what kind of shit is this?". I then proceeded to play it until school the next day. My first KH experience was a card game and I loved every second of it. I ended up beating the game, and when I figured out I could play again as Riku, I shit my 10 year-old pants. Ah. Good times.

This is my first time watching a video from this guy,and just by looking at the intro I felt like I was in heaven for a second mainly because of the Bayantta music and the Emil head just rolling around and it also made me question if I was high or not............(subscribes)
RE Chain Of Memories is special because you have Donald and Goofy voicing lines that were previously only text, and some of it gets far weirder than the relatively small bits of dialogue they have in KH1. Even then, the unvoiced dialogue they still have (when talking to them before and after floors) is still even more ridiculous.
Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories was my first Kingdom Hearts game since at the time I didn't own anything Play Station related. It gives enough context that a causal player can easily follow it and the graphics and music are very well done. The gameplay is challenging but also fun, although I didn't really use many of the sleights. I always get nostalgic whenever I watch videos of this game because of how much I enjoyed it.
Oh god! That bit where fake Riku and Sora were arguing and then "piss running down his leg" got me good! I was expecting the mockery but not that description.
2:50 - to be fair, the original GBA game didn't have voice acting, so Re:CoM didn't get dubbed until after KH2, and they weren't going to change the VA. Puberty happens *shrugs*
The idea of darkness having a smell is also possibly raised in the original kingdom hearts. One of the four clues you can find in Wonderland to help exonerate Alice is "stench". So far as I can recall you're correct that it is never brought up again, though.

Edit: About the awkward line delivery. Since this game was dubbed WAY after the fact, Square didn't invest in reanimating the lip flaps for English voices, so the actors and script writers had to work with the Japanese lip flaps.
The GBA version is honestly less of a drag to get through. The 2D pixel art just wooshes past you and and most worlds are over in about 10-20 minutes vs exploring whole 3D worlds that average around 20-30 minutes. Riku’s story is MUCH easier considering in the final world he has nothing but lv6 and up cards with all the 0 cards in the back of the deck. Just level Attack every time you can and just pour everything into HP.

There's something genuinely...upsetting about his story. As he's disappearing, he comes to terms with his existence as nothing more than Vexen's experiment. Riku just tries to comfort him while admitting that he'll probably end up just like him.

That's actually not true. If you look closely while playing, you'll notice that the cutscenes are pre-rendered in Re:CoM while in every other game they're in-engine. So they weren't actually able to re-do the mouth movements to suit new dialogue.
The Pixel art from the OG Chain of Memories is so good. I wish we had gotten another title in that style almost.

Other than the fact that Union Cross is a PHONE GAME i honestly find it to be my favorite story so far in the series. In fact, im more hyped (storywise) for it than KH3. I know thats a bit of an unpopular opinion but hey I LOVE MY MIND GETTING FUCKED!!!

I remember playing this game when I was 8 years old. It was on my GBA and was the first exposure to the series that I had. I honestly liked it, though I didn't retain any of the story, and didn't know that it was a sequel until years later. Re: Chain of Memories is something I still need to get around to playing.

Chain of Memories has my favourite story out of all KH games. Mainly because it's one half of bad guys mindscrewing Sora, and another half of Riku having a full on character arc and development. And third half of irrelevant Disney shenanigans, but who gives a crap about that...

Recently found the Clemps channel and am loving some of the older content! I figure I would add my two cents as well!
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on the Game Boy Advance was actually my FIRST Kingdom Hearts game (I didn't know about the series at the time). I loved it, and I was captivated by Namine and how she relates to Sora! I then played KH: 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts I & Kingdom Hearts II. I am now working on Birth By Sleep! The GBA version of Chain of Memories is still one of my favorites because I liked how well it told the story, and I've probably beaten it (and Reverse/Rebirth, which is Riku's story) at least 3 or 4 times.
The PS2 version, Re: Chain of Memories, made several alterations to the gameplay that actually make it much harder for the player, giving the enemies unfair techniques and advantages. Marluxia's final form, which wasn't in the original GBA version, was really cool looking, but still unfair. My brother had a full-on rage quit in the fight against Zexion because he kept losing all of his cards! I would still recommend the original GBA version because while the pixel art may look strange to those used to the PS2 style (or PS3/PS4) graphics, it is much more fair to the player. The 2D fighting actually helps the player plan their strategy more effectively.
In my opinion, the hardest fight in the GBA version of Chain of Memories is the fourth fight against the Riku Replica (after the 12th floor, Destiny Islands). You should have your 0 cards ready because of how many sleights he uses, but other than that, it's a good challenge, as is the second fight against Larxene, which occurs immediately after. Also, the original OST for the GBA version is really good, especially the tracks for Twilight Town and Destiny Islands.
Well, that's my opinion on the game, and while I certainly can understand and respect the opinions of those who really can't stand the game, I hope some other people enjoyed the game too! I agree with Clemps though; the storyline with Namine is really good! I hope you all have a wonderful day! :)

Clemps your inclusion of Buff Riku made me cry from laughing. That was the best part of the video imo. Moving on I played the GBA version of Chains of Memories when I was younger and even I got tired of the game. After beating Riku's story I never touched the game again. My biggest issue with Chains of Memories was the card system especially in the overworld. Naminé and her scenes made the game enjoyable for me and if it wasn't for her I probably would have stopped playing. Good luck with Kingdom Hearts II that one will be a doozy for lore reasons and it's where things really start becoming complicated.

Chain of Memories on the GBA was actually the first title in the series that I played, and I remember enjoying it immensely. The gameplay was serviceable, the characters memorable (with the exception of Zexion who, on multiple occasions since, I've forgotten even existed), the card theming never became grating as those types of things generally do after a while, and I agree that the whole Naminè subplot was easily the most interesting aspect of the game.
I just wish it held up nearly as well in reality as it does in my nostalgia-tinted memories. KH2:FM has thoroughly *ruined* any chance of me ever enjoying Chain of Memories as much as I did when I was ten. And honestly, that's kind of disappointing.

So Tetsuya Nomura has apparently been listening to Marilyn Manson while drafting the series plotline. The Nobodies even got their original bodies back and showed their true forms after they were ”killed” (god-damnit-how-hard-is-it-to-actually-kill-a-character-or-two). And tbh the only other thing about as messed up and complicated as the KH-plot pain train heading straight off a cliff into plot-hole-hell that I’ve come across in my lifetime, are Marilyn Manson lyrics. Deciphering MM’s lyrics religiously since I was 10 is the only reason I can still keep up with the KH-plot and didn’t even bat an eye when they went and added all the Realms and time travel and Prophecies.
Fuck it, I’ve even seen tons of KH fanfiction written to fit the lyrics of MM. And oh boy, do they _fit_ like a full latex bodysuit!

I was fortunate enough to own a Gameboy Advance SP and a PS2 at the time (both fantastic consoles).
My older cousin showed me KH1, and I was hooked- never had I wanted a game so badly..
So one day, I ask my mom if she could pick me up Kingdom Hearts from Walmart while she was there.
I scraped my savings jar and handed her all the money I had. (It was like, 32.50 or something like that)
That night, she returns home in her van, as moms do, and I eagerly await her at the front door.
"Did you get it did you get it?" I asked, my pulse at 120 bpm.
And with a grin on her face, she hands me "Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories".
I didn't even know this game existed. I was mortified. But it being a KH game, I was willing to give it a chance.
With a smile on my face, I hugged her, thanked her, then locked myself in my room for the remainder of the evening.
I booted up the game, and said to myself "what kind of shit is this?".
I then proceeded to play it until school the next day. My first KH experience was a card game and I loved every second of it. I ended up beating the game, and when I figured out I could play again as Riku, I shit my 10 year-old pants. Ah. Good times.

This is my first time watching a video from this guy,and just by looking at the intro I felt like I was in heaven for a second mainly because of the Bayantta music and the Emil head just rolling around and it also made me question if I was high or not............(subscribes)
RE Chain Of Memories is special because you have Donald and Goofy voicing lines that were previously only text, and some of it gets far weirder than the relatively small bits of dialogue they have in KH1. Even then, the unvoiced dialogue they still have (when talking to them before and after floors) is still even more ridiculous.
Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories was my first Kingdom Hearts game since at the time I didn't own anything Play Station related. It gives enough context that a causal player can easily follow it and the graphics and music are very well done. The gameplay is challenging but also fun, although I didn't really use many of the sleights. I always get nostalgic whenever I watch videos of this game because of how much I enjoyed it.

The idea of darkness having a smell is also possibly raised in the original kingdom hearts. One of the four clues you can find in Wonderland to help exonerate Alice is "stench". So far as I can recall you're correct that it is never brought up again, though.
