Lost Media Chronicles Episode 42 - Doraemon 1973

- My first anime episode. And it's also one of the most requested episodes I've EVER gotten. Doraemon may be super famous now, but his first anime adaptation was nowhere near as popular as the 1979 show. Check out the story here!

Hi, I'm a Japanese Uni Student living in the UK. According to my Japanese Father who actually seen the 1973 version of Doraemon, the 1973 series had a more goofy and slap-stick approach compared to the famous 1979 version. One major reason why there is a lack of amateur recording is due to kids at the time having a stronger interest to the competitive anime, 'Mazinger Z' which broadcast on Fuji-TV during the same time. (yes, the holy original)
Huh. That's pretty interesting. Do you know anymore info?
The 1973 anime series featured a female robot duckling called Gachako as a main side kick of Doraemon. Actually, she was a one-off character which appeared in the early episodes of the original manga. However, she was quickly dropped due to Mr Fujiko F. Fujio disliking the character. The few manga episodes which featured her didn't appear in any Tento-mushi comic volumes and she was forgotten by many.
well now we know the synopsis and a little more detail on the 1973 show thx!
Studio Morokoshi Do you know any plots of the show's episodes?
yah do u?
As ridiculously popular as Doraemon is in Japan, I can't believe there hasn't been more of this series discovered.
...But then again, I guess there are thousands of episodes of Sazae San that we don't have either.
Famous works can become missing no matter how popular they are. For instance, _Doctor Who_ has been one of the most popular kid's shows in the UK since its beginnings in the 1960's and it's still missing 97 episodes (one of which may be permanently lost).
Kids show? KIDS SHOW?
Yes, kid's show. From the start, _Doctor Who_ was a show intended for children, which is why it's had so many run-ins with moral guardians in the 70's and 80's. Even today, the revival series is intended for viewing by children and their families in Britain; it's only rated TV-14 in America because of differences in cultural values between the US and the UK.
game4brains 123 yup :)
Kyle Cruzan The Sazae-san thing is due to the late creator's rules against home video releases for the show.
Apparently there were still surviving footage and audio from the show, they commonly show it at doraemon conventions. ( yes, that was from the Lost Media Wiki ) EDIT: I think got it from the Doraemon Wiki.
I'm trying not to brag but, I'm a huge fan of doraemon :3
Same
I know this is unrelated to Doraemon, but Your Lie in April fucking murdered me. Sobbed like a goddamn baby almost every episode of that series. I wish there was lost media on that because it would mean that there's more to the story. But unfortunately everything with that was final.
I downloaded the April Fools episode. Fuckin' worth it
Is it really that good
If you ever want to do another Lost media Anime episode, Maybe do the search for the Lost english dub of Candy Candy? Its an anime series that ran from 1976-1979 and only the first two episodes of the english dub has shown up online.
My Japanese grandparents might have seen this show before, but the problem is that they are in Japan and i'm in America.
we might be going to Japan this summer so I can ask them.
Tell me if they have any copys
Hello?
Hey, did you uh... Go to Japan yet ?
Did you ask them?
The station did not acquire the broadcast rights to the 1973 anime.
Doraemon was so famous in India ❤️ MISS MY CHILDHOOD
I guess Doraemon is like an Asian version of Mickey Mouse & Bugs Bunny!!
@@BTsM.BnussTYPC351 Nah! It's totally different.... Doraemon is robot from 22nd century and is friend of a Japanese school boy, Nobita.... Who is really dumb and Gian his (not a great) friend bully him always and Nobita ask Doraemon to beat the shit out of that bully with his Sci-Fi gadgets...And all episodes are usually kinda similar.....Like this bully scene is in 9/10 episodes.... But still I used to enjoy it....and i still watch it's new movies
This was an interesting video. I learned more about the lost 1973 Doraemon anime thanks to you. 🤓
Also, this was the first time I ever saw a video from your channel. I searched "doraemon 1973" and this video was in the results.
Toyama TV was the last station to rerun the 1973 anime, but in that happened on August 3. the publisher of Doraemon manga (Shogakukan) send a letter to the station.
I like Doraemon and here in Indonesia, the Anime and Manga so popular and i always watch the Anime in the TV show back in 2006
I don't know if you do requests but If you do, do Sam and friends me and some guy are trying to find more on this show
19 episodes are found but 86 are known to exist, if you do this credit will be given and it may spark some interest on it
Thanks
This was my introduction to doraemon so......thanks
Have you thought about covering some lost media involving the Beatles? Specifically Carnival of Light.
I love doraemon
Also, did you seriously call Ah! My Goddess a "guilty pleasure"? Like, bro, come on here! I know it's corny and extremely optimistic, but that's the point of the show. Nobody will laugh at you for liking Ah! My Goddess.
I love that show
Where do I watch the 1979 series in Japanese with English subtitles?
Just go on UA-cam and search
Doraemon (1979 Tv series) English subs
@@shakeyframe2330 unfortunately a lot of them get mixed up with Hindi dubs.

Interesting video
So, besides the op and ed, does anyone know where a full episode still exists online?
Fujiko Fujio Fan Latino Ah, I see. But if he can't publicly post them online, can't he privately share them with those who ask?
I think we, the Doraemon community, could fundraiser $45800.00. It'd take a while, but honestly I'm that curious.
I don't know, the stuff that the TTTE fandom pulls off is pretty amazing, I don't know why the Doraemon fandom cant do something similar.
@@Thomas__Blue Did you they ever raise the funds?
@@shakeyframe2330 No sadly.
I have an image of this series on Amino.
this was uploaded on my birthday
is it just me or shizuka actually looks dead inside at 5:02 and the file 35w042.jpg
i feel like you should do anime month
0:14 polish subtitles
now all i see from doraemon on the internet are hindu episodes, lots of them.
Yes. The episodes from 1979 era is mixed with Hindi dubs, and the episodes from 2005 era is mixed with Indonesian dubs.
the 3 mons. doraemon. pokemon. digimon
tanasinn
Umm it's still running
Yea, the 2005 version is still running.
It's a Japanese cartoon, not anime.
1.Japanese cartoons = anime
2.Japanese call dorameon as an anime
3.dorameon is always in anime festivals
4.all anime are Japanese cartoons
5.some dorameon characters are drawn in anime styles
6.dorameon is based on a manga
@@dirtydirtsgt4751 Unlike anime, I don't see large eyes in Japanese cartoons, including Doraemon.
@@durece100 1.they're probably not in the series they're in some dorameon movies
2.sazae-san is known as the most classic anime in Japan even it doesn't have any anime art style
@@durece100 Having big eyes isn't exclusively anime, by that sense of logic any US cartoon like South Park is considered anime. "If I see large eyes in those animations, it's anime eughh"
@@hideofreakingkojima5457 Yes it does. Anime characters do have big eyes. You don't pay attention to anime.
this is relevant to my interests
Like if you are a fan of the U.S. adaptation of Doraemon!
There was a plan for 1979 Doraemon U.S. adaption but due to inapropriate scenes,It was never allowed to be aired
Yeah
@dorafan7348 I mean, it’s understandable due to the infamous running joke of Shizuka getting her bathing interrupted by Nobita and such which wouldn’t get away in the states due to cultural differences since…well….it’s less of a joke and more as the implication that Nobita would probably get a criminal record for unintentionally stalking her.
@@pennysanchez7656i fucking hate that gag sm
So this is the last station to rerun the 1973 anime was Toyama Television (aired from July 24 to August 3, 1979). however, the publisher (Shogakukan) send a letter to the station to stop airing the 1973 anime due to avoid destroying the reputation of the new series (1979 anime)
Doraemon pilot is lost! :(
the lost doraemon pilot is the 1973 anime pilot film "doraemon came out" this is the name of the 1972 pilot film
I wish someone would make a petition to get someone like Funimation to get the rights to the show and a possible re-release. Who's on board with me?
Me I guess.
I never even knew a 1973 series existed
I've seen the 1979 series with subs and the 2005 series English dub
I've seen the US dub on Disney XD in 2015, the year the dub premiered.
I love the ending theme song of Doraemon 1973, Doraemon Rumba.
I think the intro is better in the 73 version.
Yasss, the opening and ending were bops
Fr
fun fact : this anime from 1973 I think was melted onto a SpongeBob tape in a house fire
I'm a fan of Doraemon, I've heard this lost media article on somewhere website. Thanks for telling the story and I subbed.
As a European who used to watch Doraemon on TV on the mid to late nineties, I'm surprised to learn that American audiences never got to see the show until the 2005 relaunch of the show. Over here it was wildly popular, and re-runs of the old show continue to show up on television fairly often.
James McDohl i didnt know about it until 2013 when they reaired on disney xd, i loved it then now i want to watch it again
Let me guess, you're from Italy.
wasnt doraemon re-aired on disney XD a couple years ago?
That was the 2005 version.
I don't know why they try burying the 1973 version. There is a few errors, but it is pretty good. They should release it on DVD instead of being copyright hogs. Plus, they could make money off of it since it is rare.
The 1973 Doraemon is lost tho there is half an episode on someone's Doraemon 1973 NipponTV footage playlist
All the original master tapes were lost in a studio fire so the studios don't have the tapes anymore.
@@lightyagami3492Contrary to popular belief, that didn’t actually happen, Masumi Jun himself even stated that only production material was destroyed, not footage.
Doraemon is a huge thing here in Portugal and in Spain.
Now that's a name I haven't heard of in a long time.
I remember when I saw this broadcasted on a TV, during my holiday to Ibiza.
it was still very important a treasure even its quality was bad because thats how doraemon begins. now its like all watch it always start in season 2 without idea how the main characters met
I love constantly coming back to this video, it’s such a good watch, and an amazing look into the development hell and lost media struggles of the series, hopefully full episodes will start surfacing, one day…
Copyright is the enemy of art
Never seen Doraemon, but I was made aware of it's popularity in the late 90s by one of my teachers. Always wondered why he had no ears. I mean, it kinda makes him look like a seal.
Apparently, Doraemon lost his ears when a rat basically chewed them to bits. It also contributes to his fear of mice.
If any of you are interested, here's an invite to a server dedicated to the search of Doraemon '73 discord.gg/nAtcJXn
It expired :[
the spongebob movie is not fake thw creator has the scricpt lsupsonicq done a video and osme offther youtubers have done too
From what I've read, the 1973 anime was a brief, but successful attempt at bringing Doraemon into anime form. However it was apparently not successful enough for a continuation.
(I got this from the Doraemon Wiki)

You mispronounced a lot of Japanese words and names in this video, including manga and Nobita.
DigitalBrave Studios he pronounced them with an American accent.
Matthew Bluettmoore I'm an American and I've never pronounced them that way. Maybe I'm just weird.
DigitalBrave Studios Well its hard to pronounce it
DigitalBrave Studios he also pronounced doraemon worng
Go to Google Translate.
Type "manga" in english.
Hit the audio button.
I remember this (the newer series though) onDXD a couple years ago
the name fujiko fujio were pseudonym of two people. there were abiko and hiroshi fujimoto and motoo abiko.
If anyone want to know what happened to the episodes, they burned down in a fire.
I’m pretty sure that was just a rumor
Sadly, Doreamon has so much lost media.
Who else feels like copyright laws might be outdated?...
Umm... The Copyright License Now Belongs to Shin-Ei Animation
i love doraymon and nobida!! 🤤

Shoegazer Productions no i just stopped watching as i lost interest, now im back...
