I had a hitch installed (not by you guys) and now I get water in the spare wheel well. Carpet is only wet in the very bottom of the well, not the sides nor anywhere above that point. Is the rubber grommet behind the tail lights the only place where the installer could have screwed up to let water get in?

Probably as you write the rubber grommet behind the tail lights and the water is finding its way down to the bottom of the well.
