Love this tune, and have just finished reading Roger Hutchinson's book about Calum McLeod and the history behind the road building. Interesting book and a great life.
I didn't realise the significance of the title of this BRILLIANT song. Now I do and it's even better. Never been to Raasay, but I've played golf (badly) at Sconser, just over the water on Skye.
I found the music bin a fiddle book and tried to learn it on the fiddle having never heard this tune. I then searched and found your youtube and i love this tune. I hope to do it justice someday. Thanks for posting. Larry
Thanks, leoddagan - I was able to google "concertina" and figure out what it was. I'd seen that kind of instrument, of course, but didn't know the name.
@Maidrya This is a concertina (D key). Then a fiddle comes in at unison, but there is also a kind of synthesizer or arranger. Try this link to check out if it fits your first impression
A concertina? Really, are you sure? I play concertina and it doesn't sound at all like this. I would have thought it was an accordion - after all, the tunes composer, Donald Shaw does play accordion in the band.
Does anyone know instrumentation at the opening? Is it an accordian-like instrument playing the melody or some kind of pipe? Thanks for posting this - very enjoyable.
I would say it's a piano-accordion the first time through, on a light coupler like the clarinet coupler, then when the band comes in, he changes to a musette coupler for a fuller sound. I play piano-accordion - that's what it sounds like to me.
'Tis a fine tune, but these photos are nowhere near Calum's Road on Raasay. Hopefully you know that story, and how it ended ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calum_MacLeod_(of_Raasay)
@@calexrs ahh, Dónal’s deirthair. Go deimhin! I saw him on video recently with Máiréidín agus Nia. Excellent trio :) So Manus was a member of Capercaillie or just a guest?
Whenever I listen to this I all but burst out into tears. Such a beautiful song.
I have no word to describe my emotion !🤩
