- Did you ever wonder if you could take a mobility scooter on a public transit bus? I am here to tell you, yes, it can. While sizing will be limited, most folding, travel, and standard size mobility scooters can easily access a bus. All public transit buses are required by required by the ADA to have accessible ramps either at the front or rear of the bus. This includes airports and city buses.
We did this video because its a commonly asked question brought to our staff. We wanted to show you the end result. All in all it was very simple to take a mobility scooter on a bus. I would be weary about the size of the scooter. We would suggest get no larger than a standard size unit. The longer the scooter, the harder it will be to load the scooter coming in on an angle. Thats just a little tip we learned along the way. You should stick with a folding, travel, or standard size mobility scooter when travelling on the public transit bus with a mobility scooter.

Interesting, the driver didn’t secure the scooter with restaurant straps. In King Co Seattle Transit buses wheelchair & scooters are required to be strapped in.
These scooters have automatic brakes that lock the scooter into place. Its not really necessary but definitely not a bad idea to be extra safe. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
Seen this thousands of times in nyc where I'm originally from..
The older buses the back door was where they let wheel chairs and mobility scooters in..
The back door had i think it was 3 steps.. and a pillar inside the bus with a fliptop. The driver had to get up walk to the backof the bus flip that top open and there were a few switches.. he would toggle these switches.. one would open the double back door the others would move the steps out.. the steps would then slide out and down and form the ramp (actually it transformed into a lift)... then once the person was on the ramp lift the ramp would move up allowing the scooter / chair entry..
Once the person was in.. the ramp lift would then be positioned down the ramp would split and form 3 steps again the steps were moved back in to place in the back door inside the bus.. the driver then fliped one final switch that released and closed the bsck door he then closed and locked the fliptop.. then walked back to the front of the bus.. then got back in the drivers seat and continued driving... that's how it was back in about the 1980's..
Sometimes the driver was lazy and didn't want to do all that so he would tell the wheel chair / mobility scooter occupant the lift wasn't working and they had to wait for another bus... lol

great video. Unfortunately here we have to have a seatbelt permanently fastened to our mobility device to be able to enter or exit the bus on our scooter. Otherwise I would use public transportation.
what state are you in? I'm interested in learning about other states DOT regulations when it comes to a mobility device.

I'm afraid this looked like a setup. All the front seats were conveniently in the upright locked position? (Have you any idea how coveted those seats are?) I also noticed you must have been on one of your tiniest models for this demonstration. (That certainly wasn't an Afikim scooter you were on. Would even the C3 fit?) The final thing that makes me think this was a setup ... just when did you pay for that bus ride? (It may get discounted, but even disabled passengers have to pay a fare!)
I think you're a setup, what are you a competitor? Nothing about this video was a setup, it was done in real-time without any preparation.
What are you let’s criticize the crap out of everybody police! I thought this was a fantastic video quite frankly, and I think you, should be more respectful of other people! Even if it was a set up, it still shows people and teaches people that they can use these things on buses, and public transportation! Mobility direct makes the greatest videos on UA-cam regarding scooters and disability equipment, far better than anyone else! I love the videos these guys make, they are showing you in every way they can think of how to use the scooters in every day real life situation! You should be appreciative of this not critical!
Or is hating on people something you just like to do to make yourself feel more secure in the world? Not a good way to go about life! Many people will very quickly be avoiding your personality if you continue to do things like this! Just a pointer, case you want to make your life better, instead of trying to make other peoples lives worse!
Driver is required to strap the scooter in place with "seat belts" mounted from the floor to anchor points on the scooter. If he takes a sharp turn and flips the scooter.. $$$$$$$$
I have had a scooter since April 2021 and still haven’t had the balls to go on public transport with it. I’m terrified lol
Now this video shows just how easy it is. Just don't take a heavy Duty 4 wheeler and you'll be just fine.

it will be a bit more challenging. the trick is not to use a large scooter. some people don't have that option, however.

Some buses probably do, this one did not.
I have the Pride Victory 10, I ride buses and trains daily. Always a tight fit, always a hassle as it gets stuck at the corner of entry and exit. I wish someone would make a scooter that f has the size of your test scooter with the ruggedness of the Wrangler and distance of the Afikim with the Dakota battery upgrade.
That would be a dream scooter! Hopefully someone can engineer one like that :)
Hi there fellow Victory 10 scooter buddy 🛺 My scooter looks like this little emoji 🛺 with my canopy attached to it. I’ve learned to remove Both of my armrest and my Big Metal Bike Basket, but I know what your talking about getting Stuck, but for me it’s on the Front of the bus Exits. Our Newer busses use the Front door to load & unload us with scooters and our older busses have the back door loading and exiting (which I love) With the front door loading, I’m pretty good getting on, but it’s now become a bit of a problem since the Covid pandemic hit and the buses put up them plexiglass walls inside to protect there drivers, so it’s harder for me to make a tight & clean turn to exit the bus, but with a little bit of time and patience, I make it and everybody is happy 🥳🎉👏🏼🥳🎉👏🏼🥳🎉👏🏼🥳🎉

My mobility scooter would not fit pride mobility RAPTOR..
That is more of a rec scooter, it's just to big.

If they can come up with a mobility scooter that is the same distance as EW36 the 36 or the raptor mobility scooter then it would be make more sense
If you have canopy on top , is it still be easy to get inside the bus?
Probably not with the canopies we have now, but soon, there will be one that collapses easily. Stay tuned for a video review of that canopy which should be released sometime this year.

During COVID all fees for public transportation were free. This particular bus had a ramp in the rear.
How funny. You’re taking one of the SMALLEST Scooters on a bus 🤣🤣🤣🤣 You need to ride a bus with a Victory Pride 10 & with a Canopy. I’ve been dong this since I got my 1st Pride Victory 10, 5 years ago. I was scared to death trying to Load and then unload from the bus, but I did it. The 1st thing you have to do is TAKE YOUR FRONT BASKETS OFF or you’ll break them and injure your scooter. Boy was that a mess, but I lived and learn. Then you have to learn how to COMPLETELY TURN YOUR WHOLE SCOOTER AROUND, WITHOUT ROLLING OVER TOES, because people DO NOT WANT TO MOVE FOR YOU AT ALL😡😡😡 Even if you ask them Nicely. Every time I need to Renew my bus pass, I have to show them that I can Maneuver my scooter WITH NO HELP & when they see me coming, they are Always super shocked in how I can handle my scooter (with its canopy on) and how well I can get on and off with it. My scooter is the “Rolls Royce” of scooter 🤣🤣🤣 So again, you guys should show them how to get on and off a bus with a 4 WHEEL BIG Scooter. It’s not for the fain to heart 😉😉😉😉
I got the Pride Victory heavy duty scooter with 4 wheels on Tuesday and could not get it onto the County Connection buses here in Martinez Ca without both the driver and I lifting the damned thing into the handicapped space because I could not turn it because of the 2 large plastic wheel well covers at the front of the bus will not allow me to turn it properly.
CC rules only allow 3 wheel scooters on the bus and it does not say that on their website, bus or bus schedules and I had to do a lot of searching to find that out.
I was NOT given any idea of what kind of 4 wheel scooter would arrive and was never told by the company that it would NOT fit on the bus.
I am very upset over that as I have TWO bone on bone fractured kneecaps and both await replacement surgery.
I have to send it back and hope a Revo is smaller, has a smaller turning radius and will enable me to get on the bus and the ramp did not activate the metal stop & I started to slide down the ramp backwards which scared the hell out of me !
I get it this is for instructional purposes but please don't get on the bus with your scooter thing to go to the next stop and get off.
Why not? I'm a paying customer? What does 1 stop or 3 stops matter. The intent is to show you how it's done.
I ride a Fortress 1700 DT 4 wheel. They do not fit on public transit. As you enter the bus there is no room to turn into seating area. That small scooter you are using will fit but larger units will not.
I agree using a smaller scooter is definitely more beneficial

it does not look like it. Some places that is policy. there are hooks the driver will connect to the scooter

@@ZazzelTheGamer not in the United States. It's only if the operator feels the unit is unsafe. For example a unit being so large it obstructs the isle for passing.

Great video Drew also allow me to echo off of your review it is through my experience very easy using public transportation when riding the jazzy ZT or jazzy ZT10 scooter it is much easier to maneuver and turn around with a zero turn type scooter I currently use the jazzy ZT first generation and thinking of upgrading to the ZT10 for the speed also I hope this helps someone thanks again and keep up to your work.

I was actually really scared to try this. I have the gogo traveler plus (i think something in that area of models) and i like being on the go but im not too mobile on foot and i was afraid the scooter wouldnt fit and id be embarrassed and have to get off.

@@MobilityDirect It did and i did try it! though i discovered that when i do it on our buses it is easier for me to get off the scooter and roll it up backwards myself (i can walk and stand for a short time, and it doesnt take alot out of me to just roll it up to the space for it)

Sorry about that but we are a company based in the USA.
In theory it works in the UK wherever I've been so far. In fact, where I live (Midlands) most buses have front doors that drop down to kerb level and you just drive on - much easier than the ramp way shown here.
In practice though it's not straight forward. Firstly, if you want to ride on to the bus where I live, you must pass a test to show you can manoeuvre the scooter well enough. Secondly and more importantly in my opinion, is there's only one space on most buses. Unfortunately, people will sit on the folding seats provided in the scooter space and refuse to move. Or they use the space for a baby buggy (with or without a baby) or something like luggage - even though other space is provided for these things. The driver cannot insist on the person causing the problem giving priority to the mobility scooter or wheelchair user - they can only ask.
The result is the scooter or wheelchair users are left sitting on the kerb to wait for the next bus in the hope they can get on it. In the video the bus was almost empty and the chances in the UK of reversing into the designated space are slim. You're much more likely to ride on into any space near the door and reverse back the way you came when you want to get off. Do your research first because this kind of travel is not for the faint hearted!

I used to live in Orlando area and used the bus to go to work everyday. It was easier than in my country (Brazil) but sometimes the ramp wasn’t functioning. And also they always fastened the scooter with the bus’ seatbelt

I was able to get my Pride Magnum 3 wheel on a bus like that, but it took a lot of maneuvering. I bought this model because of my weight. The whole reason I got the scooter was so that I could get out of my apartment. I’m still really scared that I spent all of this money and still effectively confined to my apartment.

okay a few things....thats a really small scooter,most of us wouldnt use those going anywhere,they dont have the range and cant carry anything,try it when the bus has people on it and strollers with say a 3 wheeler scooter,your vid is not realistic for me
