Got to be a part of this really cool conversation! So grateful to have such good friends who we can disagree with about some things and have a fun argument without anyone getting hurt. Still haven't decided between gap theory or day age, but that's part of the fun.
Framework theory, Chaos Restitution theory and many more. Not that anyone asked but I lean towards Chaos restitution myself. If we read it against the other near eastern creation myths with things like Tiamat and what have you always rising from the water. There is a lot of symbolism to The Ruach of God hovering over the Chaos waters.
The issues of Genesis not describing reality, as far as has been discovered through modern scientific methods, are not in Gen 1 (which is clearly metaphorical), but the rest of Genesis (Noah, Abraham, etc.) Fixating on Gen 1 always strikes me as avoiding the hard problems with the rest of the book.
If you dont have to "Believe" the same things....then why do you have the believe in any of it. There is a less "mystical" reason to everything you think is Biblical;
