How to Build... a Friend?? (DIY Human Automaton, AKA "Igor")

- This video was all about finally "making" a friend... For a long time I have been interested in the idea of automatons. The old-time skill, craftsmanship, and innovation is something that I found a lot of beauty in. These mechanical masterpieces were nothing short of magic for their time, and the skill of creating them has since lost most interest.
So, today I hope you enjoy watching my attempt at making my own rudimentary version of an automaton! If you did, don't forget to "Like" and subscribe! Also, I hope you all like the new channel name!!
Oh, and don't forget to check out these guys!!
"Randomonium" AKA Jon and Danny:
/ @likelycrew
Thank you all so much for your interest in this video! Best wishes for these trying times.
Best regards,
-Tate
“Not an engineer” but likely more capable than one holding a degree. Keep up the interesting and educational content 👍
After working with many engineers from almost all branches, from mechanical to civil and computer and electronics, I can attest to that.
I'm an engineer, and I consider myself a fairly good one in my craft. But I certainly can't match the versatility of this guy.
I don't think it takes a degree to be an engineer
Another engineer here. This guy has skill. Engineering just wraps math around it so you can refine it. But it’s just number crunching if you don’t have the skill to begin with!
As much as the other Randomonium channel has a larger audience atm, you definitely have far more potential and imo, more interesting content.
Keep up the good work!
I appreciate that!
I watched about 2 of that other channel and was bored... BUT as a kinetic sculptor I'm love with this !
@@randomn6473 i concur with 4ox also! keep up the great work!
I've been watching quite a few automata videos, mostly with the Jaqurt Droz writing/drawing automatons. The use of stacks of cams is fascinating, not only in its complexity but how they knew exactly to form the cam lobes so precisely for the fine hand movements! Also the way the cam plates are shifted up and down is remarkable. I like your creation and the use of the cams as a mechanical state machine. I think you are very bright and clever!
I have designed quite a few electro-mechanical machines, mostly test tixtures using microcontrollers, servos, linear actuators, steppers and various feedback sensors and from this background and point of view am astonished at how 18th century designers could do this all with clock mechanisms, cam stacks etc.
Randomn: “Don’t worry Jimmy, you’re not being replaced.”
Automaton: *“ You foolish kitty... your spot in this family shall be mine, and you don’t even realize it..”*
Muahahahaha...
He named him Igor, not Iago...
This is the best how to automaton video that I've found so far, it's complex enough to snag attention and keep it affixed to the end
Yes Please! I have been looking for a video like this. I would love to see more. I am a miniaturist and I want to build Igore in miniature. I have been fascinated by automatons since a child and have always wanted to have one. My husband will have to help me on this build but I’m excited to try. Hugo is my all time favorite movie.
Glorious! And clearly, you are an engineer "a person who designs, builds, or maintains engines, machines, or structures". Perhaps not by training and accreditation, but certainly in practice.
I love the way you articulate the arms! The joints are compact enough to translate them for a prosthesis I was thinkering on, this is some inspiring work! You sir are truly an engineer at heart and mind alike.
Dude! You're talents amaze me and you're so humble and funny! Great project and video!
very impressive! i had looked into these before but have become more interested in attempting to build one after seeing Maillardet's Automaton at the Franklin institute. your attention to detail and explanations were clear and complete. i have subscribed to your channel and am will be watching other videos from your channel. also, count me in as someone who would like to see your plans posted to help them begin their journey for a successful build!!
This little guy is a gem! If you had a large enough cam bank and a steady enough motor, you could program him to be an orchestra conductor!
Dude this channel is going to go places. Good luck
Quite an impressive piece of mechanical engineering!
Please do another video! I know the likes aren't there yet but this is awesome! Maybe a new video would bring more new viewers. This video is how I found your channel.
This guy is a mad scientist. Super smart
dude u r a genius. this should have way more views, this si so impressive
this is insane, nice work man!
Thanks for this excellent video! Cheers from Outback Australia...
This was by far the best, UA-cam directed channel. You are a good descriptive talker! Is that what’s it’s called? No wait it’s a narrator. I Think. So much fun. Thank you so much.
Bloody Awesome as always
You have done really well to achieve that - good for you !
“You can tell it’s a guy because it’s brain is in its stomach” fair point. Also if you want to try and keep more of the randomium style namesake what you could do is change the name to an isotope name like Random-226 or whatever number you’d like really.
Very cool. Idk if you can tell but my profile picture is an automaton and he’s a character in my book, so you’re hitting very close to my heart here. He is perfect. Now you just need some magic fog to make him sentient so he can be a spooky skeletal antagonist turned protagonist. Granted he cannot articulate his hands so his life may be difficult 🤣
That's amazing! This is so cool.
More interesting than a Boston Dynamics robot. 15:42 It's... alive!
Love the steampunk asthetic on this build
AHEM AHEM its not asthetic
Your channel is amazing man! I wish I had the workshop and acreage you had so I could build some crazy mad scientist things like you do! I bet you're a hell of a lot better at welding than me though XD
Cool project! I love what you've done during quarantine. Great channel.
That's some westworld lookin shit right there, love it
Exactly
I just found out about this channel and without me noticing I became a subscriber and I hope if you can make your videos. 1 hour or 2 cause I never get bored watching you and I love you
thank you .❤️
Blacksmithing trick with rivits.. tighten them till nothing moves. Then heat up the joint and move it till it cools down. This will leave a nice tight movable joint
Automatons are so cool
Mad cool 😎 love it 👍
I like how you explain.
That’s incredible. You do good work
Impressive Igor!😁👏
Useful video; your explanation about cams and timing as well as co-axial movements are very good. Thank you. A few notes here: you could consider the use of aluminium on moving parts to lighten them instead of beefing-up the structure and making it heavier still. Also, WD40 is a Water Displacent and will protect from rust but it is a very poor lubricant and co, will not reduce friction. PL100 is a good spray lubricant or just good ol' engine oil for that matter. Thank you.
Thank you for this, I've been wanting to make a simple automaton of my own and this is perfect!👍
Please provide a parts list would be awesome.
The same principle using cams on a shaft is still used in machine building industry (larger for sure). At least in the Company I used to work at in Germany. It's cheaper and more reliable than using electrical drives for everything. At least if the movement of a machine is always the same
Great job . Good work
Great ideas man keep em coming
Amazing as always
Really cool. I myself Have been thinking about making a modular 3D printable automaton lately
random N = as in to the Nth degree, or the random number you might use in figuring out engineering math/designs.
I like it. I watch both channels. I found this one looking for theirs and liked the channel so subscribed to it too.
I'm early, yehaw.
edit, also that kinda looks like a NPC movement path while talking in one of the old computer or console games.
How do you only have 80+\- subs???
You should have well over 1-2million!!
🔥🔥🔥🎉👍🏻❤️
Incredible!
Well done ✅
I was wonder who stole all my bicycle chains and my Kitchenaid mixer!!!
Hey I love your name medicated for your safety that's awesome
@@Jonwayne777Iloveyouall glad you think it’s awesome; fortunately it’s the truth. However as much as I’ve changed, I feel like my identity has been stripped of who I was. I’m a different guy.says everyone I know. I have no labido, can’t get it up, crazy suicidal and I’m feeling more mad more like a pussy everyday. Still riddled with chronic undiagnosed pain: because fibromyalgia is the name they give you when they haven’t a fucken clue as to what your actual ailment is or stems from. It’s what they do - when they know your right- and you’re a super loud and possible violent boat rocker seeking justice when I see things that are unfair in life.
Love it!
Awesome video, I would love to see more of the same. New subscriber.
Awesome
Are you sure you are not going to name it ...... Wilson?
Incredible dude💪
Glad you like it!
Plz put out a list or instruction or something I have all ways though automatrons were awesome
✨💛✨
Do more.
no
super cool vid my guy
Please tell me there’s a list of all the parts involved! I am very interested! :)
nice job
Was this inspired by the Hugo automaton or the Jaquet Droz writer automaton?
ձեր նվիրումը գովելի է
I need a lathe and a drill press, asap!
A welder would also go a long way towards building my new apocalypse buddy.
very cool
👍!
Not sure about his demeanour but to me he seems a bit Cranky...
I'll show myself out now.
Dear god if anyone could get mech legs to work it would be this man
My question is, what inspired you to make this and in that specific way? did you have issues with making all the moving points?
I also have a desire to build an automaton. My idea is that it would connect with an elderly person scooter and while the person is driving the scooter forward the automaton would "run".
hell yeah! also what type of air pump u use for the underwater rig?
I used a cheap Chinese made HPA paintball tank pump that I got on Amazon! Seems to do the trick!
Great job
Please tell me your going to university for engineering because you'd be a natural and extremely good at it
I would very much like to someday! Unfortunately college is just way too costly at the moment.
@@randomn6473 I have a feeling that this channel will eventually give you many financial advantages. Keep up the good work. I'm excited to see your evolution. You control your own destiny.
Consider a Journeyman apprenticeship. It’s also four years, but a company will pay for hands on training, college classes, and you’ll get a journeyman card at the end.
I really want to build one of these now! Btw what cad program did you use?
Fusion 360!
3.4 million views on that last build for that guy! wow! must be rich now amiright? lol
How's the oil burner working?
I think rondom would be a better channel Name cause its slightly comical as it rhymes w condom.
You should have made your channel name do-it-yourself Concepts DIY Concepts
How about do-it-yourself at random DIY at random there we go yeah baby yeah
do a more complex version, make it run on battery as well
I'm more interested in contraptions with real-life use. That'd help other people.
Leonard da Vinci would be jealous!
Almost 8000 likes to go
nice
Does that name mean that you're from minnesota? I heard that you're something like a mad scientist so I was wondering like if you've ever thought about making an elixir of immortality to keep you like alive forever in terms of like slowing aging or whatever cuz you know I've always thought about making like a Dexter's Laboratory and then trying to figure out some way to like synthesize d erthyrose four carbon chain sugar that has to do with like the pentose 5 phosphate system and your mitochondria and your ATP cycle Etc
now u just need to attach a washing machine motor
Sr you've answered my long life question how to make a friend by my own thanks I will never be alone again 😢
Good job done
*waves* This IS the droid you are looking for.
Say hello to my little friend ♥️
this reminds me of the syberia videogames
Can you build a steam powered vehicle?
I lowkey wanna try making that sometimes.
Go for it! If you do, don't forget to share your creation with the rest of us!
Or at least something similar. Idk I need to keep my hands busy.
that is more like i like it.
I wonder if there's a Disney engineer out there you can brain pick regarding automatons and their track record with them. This was cool.
The automations that Disney ran decades ago were controlled by military computers (the UYK-7). Those computers were (are) horrendously slow (on the order of 100,000 instructions per second), but they had massive I/O. It's one of the really random bits of trivia I learned when I was in the US Navy about three decades ago, learning about those very computers. But I wouldn't be surprised if the old automatons worked very much like this, but using solenoids or synchro motors in place of the cams.
@@BrianDaleNeeley That's fascinating brother, can definitely see that with the old builds. Wild.
Now build a female one and make her extremely complicated by making the cams auto rotate with a clock motor so you will never be able " understand" her program.
I would like to see you build a telepresence drone animatronic able to do chores (walk up and get the mail) see thru it's eyes hear what it hears experiances etc.
I want one but I can't make things.
Its a buddy!
put a hoodie on it
If anyone is wondering what song is faintly playing in the back ground here’s the link to it

You should try to make a new microphone
