I started to synch/ upload ~30,000 photos and vids from my 2011 MacBook Pro. I started 6 days ago and the little upload box currently says Synching 27756 of 182317. What does this mean? And is this normal for this amount of content? Do I continue to let it go? Thanks for the advice

Here is biggest problem with Google photos, all of my photos are organized by folders and sub-folders on my external hard drive. For example: Photos> 2018> Hawaii Family Vacation. If I were to upload my 25,000 I have taken past 10 years they would all just be in a single Google photos folder and not organized. Is there a way around this problem?
not really, they are viable through google photos and remain folder structure if you are using backup system. Just look for the device that is backup ed in google drive.
Serhi's got a point. When you open google photos look and click the album button, then on the screen on the top are people, places and things etc... Underneath is a section called photos on device is basically your folders of all your pics. But to be able to use it properly you have to separate all your pictures in folders first so when you open google photos you can choose all the folders of every sections of your life there is in your whole collection. It migh seem a lot of work considering the 25.000 photos, but at least for now google photos is helping you a quite a bit by providing the unlimited space.... Me too just realised this tip, so a lesson for both of us next time we go on holidays or certain events we have homework to separate the pics in a separate folder for the google photos to recognize the compartmentalization of our beautiful life 😀
I have hundreds maybe thousands of photo folders. I uploaded my photos to Google and it organized my photos by date. It did a great job. Google also uses photo recognition and will show you every photo you have of that person. Pretty cool. I have photos from 18 years ago. The cool thing google does it will create an anniversary album to show you what you were doing 10 years ago on the day. I love this feature. Google is showing me pictures I didn't even know that I had, on a daily basis. If your folders are important to you, just refer back to your PC.
thanks, but something went sideways, I followed your instructions and all my 360 GB of photos got uploaded to the Google Drive and filled up the 15GB limit. I removed it and re-enabled and it did it again. Why is it uploading to the Google Drive instead of Google Photos? I chose the same settings as yours. thx, Gregoz
Did your experiment complete ? At the end of the video we see about 50+ pictures uploaded for a total over 20,000+ ; so it's starting well but will it finish ? I also have a large amount of 15+ years of family pictures, about 150,000+ files and Google Backup & Sync is just struggling to upload all that. At first, I was suspecting the slow upload bandwidth ; but then I realized it's just stuck. Even after weeks and months running, I can't really see progress and it does not seem to get any closer to completion

All photos you allow to upload into Google will be automatically saved as a "high quality" image. It means it won't be the 3MB-20MB original picture that everyone currently takes with their devices, but rather a high-enough resolution image that will remain on their cloud, and for free. It really is a great system that saves us a lot of money. Who knows, maybe 10 years down the road we will really want that 10MB image for some sort of processing, and printing (which will be a thing), but for now, I'm fine with it.

From there I have been downloading my Google Albums to my EXTERNAL hard drive that is plugged into my laptop. If I take photos from my Canon camera, I reverse the process. I move the photos from my camera to my external hard drive and THEN upload them to Google Photos!! All the folders on my external hard drive are named "ORIGINALS + description". This is so I know that the photos in that folder are also stored Google Photos! In my albums on Google Photos I lable them "On Hard Drive + description". This way I know I already have the original stored on my external hard drive! For purposes of backing up my beloved photos, this had been a great process. Where it gets tough for me is doing all the edits BEFORE uploading or downloading! As you know, this is very time consuming! I've been editing them on my phone app called Pixlar or Photo Director... To get them in my Google photos storage do I have to download them to my PC first or can I have them sent directly from the web to my Google photos?
If u delete them while they are still syncing it will think you want to delete them from the cloud too. So sign out of Drive on desktop first! Make sure they are all uploaded first too before that.

Because you have to unclick the 15 GB limit uncheck it and check mark the one that says excellent quality or whatever it is.
