I don't know why, but every time I see "Starry AF" pop up on the screen, I read it as "Starry As Fuck" As for the E-M1 Mark iii, It sounds phenomenal and I am seriously impressed by several of those new specs.
I found your channel from watching the recent talk with other micro 4/3 folks. You shared some things I didn’t catch and other videos about the mark III. Subscribed!
As a G9 owner I know others who have both...so I got this coming in the mail! I'm super excited to try it. I'm more photo than video anyway so I think this would be perfect.
Thanks! Great vid. I have the OM-D E-M10 (mk I) now. Looking for an upgrade to improve bird photography. I'm getting more and more convinced of this MKIII.
I am amazed at the negative comments. No one is forcing anyone to buy the camera. Name one camera with all the features as this. If the camera isn't for you, then don't buy it. Simple. If you need FF, buy it and get on with your life. Others do not, myself included. I've been using a Pana G9 for a couple of years now and am quite happy with the size and quality of the images, along with the video capabilities of the camera, like it's fantastic IBIS. I went from Canon to a brand I never gave much thought to until the GH4 came out. Cameras are tools. All those complaining about the sensor, what about it. Are the images bad? Isn't that what the final product is? The image? If you can take a crappy photo with a 100MP camera, were does the fault lie? Certainly not the camera. People need to get off their high megapixel, full frame sensor, horse and go out an better their skills.
Agree! Ragging on small sensors because they paid too much for their FF sensors! How dare you produce a better quality image with a Micro Four Thirds than my full frame, hell it's not better, you can't print a 20' image with that tiny sensor!
I'm very excited! Not ready to leave my Mk II just yet though. The new AF is what has me as well as the custom AF grid. I'm still not comfortable with MF and the assistance toold in the OM-D. I'll be saving up for one, 40-150mm, and new hiking boots
Joe, you’re still my favorite non-reviewer overviewer (is that a thing?) and you hit on all the key comparisons with clear and forthright explanations as to what they do and why they add value to the product. Thanks. I’ve enjoyed the E-M1.2 bodies for nearly four years come this spring and they’re ready to move on and be replaced by the Mark III bodies for my ongoing photography adventures. I’ve gotten used to many of the new features in the E-M1X and have been longing to have just this ergonomic palette in my hands in the E-M1.2 form factor. And they’ve done it and even lowered the price from what the E-M1.2 originally debuted at. I’m thrilled.
As usual, Joe cuts through all the chattering voices of the naysayers and actually points out the many benefits of the omd system, and this guy having been a pro photographer for many years should know what he's talking about. I have an em1 mk 1 and it looks like I better start saving for this camera! 👍👍👍The specs look awesome!!!
Excellent presentation of this new camera, thank you Joe! I just "downgraded" from my full frame Sony system to this much more versatile and portable Olympus, with it's outstanding functionality, ergonomics and lens selection. It's the camera for everything everywhere everytime, allowing handshooting even in the blue hour. Best regards from Switzerland.
Joe thanks for the presentation i have em i mark ii does it built in starry AF? if not what other camera has this feature apart from em1 mark iii? as this one quite costly. will appreciate your response.
Yip your on the button ! just about sold all my Nikon gear because of the weight, and have ordered the Olympus OMD Mk iii with the 12-40mm f 2.8 and the 40-150mm f 2.8, cant wait to get shooting !
Sorry, @knab2831 - I have not. I have been shooting Sony for the last three years. Nothing against OM Systems gear - it was just a business decision. I can tell you that everyone I know who has one - loves it and has only good things to say about it.
Joe another amazing video explaining the new EM1 Mkiii, love the usb charging facility and some of the other features but would love to hear your thoughts on the eye auto focus upgrade particularly as a portrait photographer yourself. Bottom line is will you be using it in your work flow? Really tempted to upgrade from the mark ii
375/5000 I'm very pleased to see that Nikon has launched a D6 with the same censor as the D5 (4 years old), so it's not "only" Olympus doing it. Something tells me that progress on censors is not going so fast anymore. A bit like the CPUs that once doubled the speed every two years - which is not the case now. I look forward to being able to upgrade my em1 mk1 to an mk3.
Great video as always Joe. But, I don’t know if Chelsea & Tony Northrup would agree with you on this camera being a professional tool due to it not being a full frame sensor camera. I’m just so tired of so many of the self professed pro photographers on UA-cam giving out BS information on camera sensor size.
Thank you Reddon Harper ! I am pretty sure that you understand I could care less if Tony and Chelsea agree with me. Professional is not an adjective that relates to gear - contrary to their BS. Professional is a reflection of a photographers behavior and ability.
Joe Edelman understood sir and I agree 100% with you. I am so tired of the UA-cam supposed photo experts. Yes, I hear what you say ringing in my ears, “Get the hell off UA-cam and just shoot”!!! LOL. Yes, I know Joe. Just so tired of how the BS UA-cam channels play on people’s emotions. Peace to you my fellow PA brother (from the Jim Thorpe & Lehighton area).
Just do not trust those idle, lying spammers - because there is no better word for them. I have just finished a job for an aviation client, using a 2013 Olympus E-P5 (!) and Olympus lenses, and the client was super happy with the results; so happy the images ended up on their publications, covers, home pages, etc. Goodness, what would happen if I had this new E-M1 Mk3?!
Oooh I really like the app features. Where it lets you do firmware updates from the app and lets you back up your camera 📷 settings to the app too. One less thing to need a desktop computer for. 😁
I have a Panasonic G9 and the Panasonic-Leica 100PL100-400mm lens. The autofocus for photographing birds in flight has disappointed. Would this camera body with its two types of autofucus be an improvement? Olympus lenses are also nice.
Hi William, I have both G9 and EM1mkII. If we take pure speed, Olympus is faster, really faster. I recently was taking shots of fireworks and I didn't not miss any, can you imagine none, zero shots. Most of them from artists prospective was very far from perfect but all were in focus. No prefocusing was required. I was impressed. On other side G9 face tracking is better compared to EM1mkII, this was a primary reason why I got G9 but now I am looking on mkIII and can see, they addressed it very well. BTW, G9 is very lovely.
@@olestein3637 Thank you. I didn't want to spring for the MIX at $3,000 but the new Mark III looks really good. I have had a few Olympus lenses...... Most of my wildbirds are perching or roosting but the Peregrine Falcons will be mating over the sea cliffs. I still love the G9.
Thanks for this overview, Joe. Gotta admit, I owned the Mark ii and many of the Pro lenses. And, about 8 months ago, I sold it all. Huge regrets. I mean HUGE! Looked through my Oly images in LR and my heart sank even further. What a mistake it was to sell my Oly gear. Can't get it back, but I'm biting the proverbial bullet and getting the Mark iii w the 12-100. I have other cameras, both full frame and APS-C, but I have to admit that my Oly images always rivaled them for story and impact. Thanks for confirming that I want back into Olympus. Sometimes we have to make a mistake to realize... Stay safe.
Many thanks Joe and well done. I've been learning much more here in 10 minutes than over videos so much longer (35 mn)... "Starry sky AF" seems nice. I got the E-M1 Mk II and starry nights are my favorits shoots... Best regards from France ! Adios ! ;-)
Hi Joe, thanks for the info! As a portrait photographer myself, I wonder if it is worthwhile enough to upgrade from the Mrk II to the Mrk III? I'm mainly in portraits, not in video, sometimes landscapes. I would like to know your honest opinion on it.
Hi I’ve just got this camera and still Learning my way through the menu but one of the reasons I got it was for Astro photography and the stary sky AF mode sounded great however I tried it but it didn’t work didn’t focus on anything just got a black screen. But maybe I wasn’t in the right ‘mode’ at the time. I was using aperture priority do I have to use full manual mode for this feature to work then?
My question is, if you shoot raw to slot 1 (with UHS-ii card) and jpeg to slot 2 (UHS-i) can you sustain full speed shooting? Not that I can afford to upgrade from em-10 yet, but I'm looking with hope towards the future.
Wow I am so early that there is only 4 other comments, I am here because I got the email announcement and had to see if anyone else posted a video on this.
Well Olympus should be paying you, because you're brilliant! I don't know if it's just me but i have full frame set-up and an OMD for the shear computational aspect. The mk2 allows me to do stuff I could only dream about with my dad's OM1
Nice video why do people complain about the screen a the view finder. just put a 12-24mm f3.5 sigma lens on my em1 via. VILTROX adapter 17-34mm equivelent now I have a nice wide angle lens I have a xt3 for video but the ibs is not the best may sell it and get a 40-150mm lens

Just added this Camera to my bag, and it is an amazing piece of kit. It won’t replace my full frames, but it is certainly more fun to shoot with - and produces professional results.
Out of curiosity but mostly boredom, I decided to give the z6 a try. It’s nice, the images can be really good, but there is no there there. Hopefully Olympus will have a media and public presence there like they used to at the US Open in Flushing.
I tried the Sony A7R III this weekend and I was not impressed. I love my EM1 MarkII, the only thing I do agree with is the EVF critiques, I do wish it could be better. I am also waiting for a 75mm 1.2 pro lens or a 12-100 2.8, both are my dream lenses.
Tania B. Silva M. - Olympus has been very open about the reason for not increasing the resolution of the EVF. The critiques are uninformed. Because the design aims to accurately capture moving subjects in the viewfinder such as sports and birds, they use a 2.36 million dot LCD with a progressive display format and 120 fps high-speed refresh rate. To increase the resolution would create tradeoffs and additional costs without gains. It is a viewfinder - not an image display. When I first picked up an Olympus camera I raised an eyebrow over the EVF until I was educated about the design and I now that I understand better how it works - I am glad they made this design choice.
