I’m so glad Alice left crystal castles. Now she’s able to express herself completely without disregard. Favorite track from the EP most definitely is Forgiveness, which I’m sure is a lot of our favorites. Great review man.
And express herself completely she has. Too bad the baby voice she's adopted doesn't sound good.

Alice influenced Grimes, not the other way around. You're not the only one to make this mistake.
Crystal Castles were around first & Grimes listed Alice Glass as an influence.
Grimes became more popular & now people assume Grimes influenced Alice.
I completely agree with what you said about the Alice clone (her less talented replacement)
& how her voice was hidden and used as just another instrument in a beat/noise, rather than clearer, defined singing.
White Lies is my fave track, other than the lead single, Forgiveness is great, too, it grew on me & The Altar remix by SAIN'† is *really* worth checking out. Totally different vibe from the version she released. It's upbeat.
CC influenced Grimes but Grimes developed in a different direction. I don't get why that differentiated Grimes couldn't then influence Alice. Musical contemporaries can and often do influence each other as they develop distinct personal styles.

Crystal Castles releases groundbreaking music, influencing a bunch of artists, including Grimes. Grimes develops her own sound (not a huge fan, but still very influential in its own right), and influences this solo project.

I'm not even a huge fan and I was cheering for her so hard since she seemed like an underdog in this situation in every way, I'm glad it worked out as I was expecting the worst.
Lots of Ethan fanboys in here. If you didn't like the album or want to point out a dissonance within Fantano's thinking, that's fine, but there's no reason to be so hateful.

After hearing new Alice glass and comparing it to new crystal castles I can’t help but credit Alice for bringing the edge to old crystal castles tracks. Of all that I’ve heard from these two, this recent release was by far the most uncomfortable.

I’ve been to hundreds of shows but Crystal Castles was by far the craziest show I’ve ever been too. Everyone gets so into it and their music fits well for a live setting

Of what Alice says, this is a personal EP, and yes, maybe she is talking about Ethan and ect, but then a writer can't write about her experiences? Kesha and many other fabulous artists do it too, it's okay, we don't know what happened there. Stop focusing in those things and enjoy the music, man. It's not a PERFECT EP, they're her first upcoming releases, she will be better in the future.

It's hard for me to imagine why so many people absolutely hate this EP. The contemporary components feel almost ironic in some spots when you contrast them with the dark themes. It has a cold, longing feeling to me, not a bandwagon one. But I guess we're all entitled to our opinions.
i loved this EP!!! i loved alices voice, it went from angelic to grating. i loved how raw and emotional the lyrics were too, im really excited to see her grow musically and as a person
This isn't a bad review, i think there were some cool things pointed out. However, i think the problem with the EP to me is that Alice's voice can get EXTREMELY annoying or grating. And I've never felt that way while she was in CC. I fucking love a lot of the production on the EP though, very fresh and dynamic sounding to me. But i disagree a LOT with what has been said for (III) and Amnesty (I), they were both solid albums that i could easily put on repeat. Not as good as (II), but still.

Yup my favorite CC was || too! Still i love ||| too. I like the new CC album with Edith, but not the persona so much... It's nothing like before but i like some songs on it. Alice's Ep, meh, i like some of it. But i prefer songs like Stillbirth which is VERYYYY good, Forgiveness..White Lies... I think she's doing 3 new songs in live shows right now. Can't wait to see what's next. 127 and youth problem seems interesting :)

I really like Alice Glass and I'm rooting for her, but this EP did nothing to disprove Ethan's suggestion that he did all the work in CC. I'm looking forward to her future work, but giving this EP a 7 is...... unduly generous.
Pitchfork also gave this EP ~7 (6.8) in a really bizarre review that didn't say much about the music or composition at all.

I really wasn't a fan of this EP. I think a big part of my dislike for it was that I was expecting it to be too much like Crystal Castles.
I enjoyed her single Stillbirth that came out a few years ago and I was hoping that the EP would be more along the lines of that; heavy beats that are the star of the show with minimal vocals that are more like background noise.
I'm really not into how her voice, and like you said, her singing was a big part of the EP. I honestly think her voice is pretty cringe-worthy when she's singing 'normally' in that child-like sweet voice. It reminds me of girls I've seen on Tumblr who're into DD/LG and talk in baby voices, which isn't really something I want to think of when listening to music. She must've played up that voice a lot more since CC, because I don't recall ever being this annoyed with her vocals.
Ah, oh well. I guess I'll just stick to solely listening to her era of Crystal Castles.

She gets an A for effort, but realistically I think time has shown she's established herself into a niche she wants to distance herself from, and for good reason. Trying to make up for that and create her own style is asking a lot to make up for other previously unexplored shortcomings. I wish she was better because I really want to like it.
I'm not a huge fan of the EP honestly, her voice was a little painful at times, but I'm REALLY looking forward to more of her work. The lyrics were really amazing to me, hearing someone being so blunt and open about the abuse is really brave and refreshing and I honestly feel like the world needs more artists who speak up about these things. I'm a bit sad that her work isn't getting as much recognition or fame as it deserves meanwhile her abuser is still has the famous title to go on with :/
Alice's not the greatest singer, but she does know how to write lyrics. Her work in earlier songs like celestica and pray is so underrated.

Her, Jupiter and even some friends can do magic, leaving CC in the mud.
She's versatile, she's elastic and she's electrifying. She's capable of writing ear worm-like songs that crawl into your head like Mine or Suffer and Swallow. Her performance, even in subtle ways, is still jarring, loud and chaotic like in Nightmares or White Lies. She is much better than what people give her credit for.

Both Crystal Castles and Alice's work feel like they are missing something. As bad as their relationship was, it pains me to admit that musically Ethan and Alice were completing each other. Like, there are some songs I really like on Amnesty, on this EP I really like 3 songs only unfortunately.
Honestly this, but I think that Alice has room to grow into something new and original which could be interesting, while CC still sounds p much the same with nothing new to the table (still good tunes tho)

There has been some good music recently!! Like most albums reviewed as of late have been mostly good!
I actually remember hearing Crystal Castles Baptism and Vietnam and Untrust Us and have enjoyed them. Then I stayed away from listening to them because I heard something Alice had gone through (maybe with her partner?). I don't know the exact details but I'm still not sure if I want to know. Now hearing she's come back some work - even though I'm 3 years late!!! -- I'm all for seeing more of what she has worked on.

Meanwhile, if she puts her face in an new musical project, it's gonna give her attention and praise (if it's well produced). I like this EP, noisy, dark, claustrophobic. But i hope she releases more solid material in the future, she is pretty interesting, although cc fan bois would tell you she's useless.... meh. Ethan hasn't been done great music either. SO.
Listen, every one of us here are CC fans, and nobody believes she was useless. This EP just doesn't sound good to many of us.

You can't classify Art like this! 7, 8 or 10 don't mind, It's not pop or commercial music, and try to put a vote on something like Alice Glass, Sophie, Arca, Zola Jesus etc... is really demeaning.

I love Alice and this EP. I appreciate this review; however, I think that it's a little unfair to fault her for taking some time to come out with music. She was in a horrifically abusive relationship for over a decade, do you know how hard it is to create any kind of art after years of abuse? It's very hard. (This is evidenced by the lack of art about domestic violence made by victims of domestic violence. If you think that isn't the case, I encourage you to look into it. I actually wrote a few papers about this phenomenon when I was in school.) It's honestly astounding that she was able to come out with music at all, given what she's been through. Personally, I think that her EP captures the reality of what it feels like to exist in the aftermath of domestic violence better than anything else that I've encountered.

Amnesty (l) is much, much better than (lll). With your bias you must have skipped through it quickly and missed Kept, Char, Fleece.

What difference does that make? Ethan always uses vocals samples. Vietnam and Violent Dreams feature vocals from a Stina Nordenstam song. Year of Silence features vocals from a Sigur Ros song. etc.
That review he put out is ridiculous. It comes across as if he listened through the tracks once and made up his mind that they sucked even before then.
I wouldn't go as far as to say its better, but there really is no disruption in the quality or trajectory of crystal castles with amnesty. That could easily be Alice on the tracks. It made absolutely no difference in my opinion. Ethan's music is the same and he's still able to create new tracks I enjoy using the same sound formula he's been doing for a long time. Now I've seen them live- Alice was a great figurehead. But acting like there was some huge sea change after her departure is just dishonest.

I LOVE alice. i still think she can do no wrong however, you're being very generous here anthony. this ep's lyrics are poorly written and alice's vocals are grating at times; I never felt this in her prior works. I'm not an Ethan fan...I always came for Alice...and i'm looking forward to her upcoming projects. This left me questioning why.
Alice is a better front person than the new CC girl of course, but Ethan's production is obviously better. It's one of the areas where I can't get on board with Fantano, he's always calling shitty production "interesting".
