- This is my first photography podcast and I talk with photographer Nick Carver. Nick is an excellent photographer who knows his craft incredibly well. We discuss making UA-cam videos, working during lockdown, van life and of course we discuss all things photography.

Nick Carver is the most underrated UA-camr out there.
Kinda... I think the number of people who appreciate his work are a reflection of the number of people who really love photography and get off their arses and do it. The clickbait monsters, well you can guess the rest, it's the first thing on the menu, for those not going any deeper than 20billion pixels and eye and nipple focus guarantee... pass me the remote :)
Nick’s pictures are amazing and the amount of work he put into a shot is astonishing
When describing Nick Carver, the first word that comes to mind is authentic.
Perfect description of Nick Carver!
Holy shit my 2 favorite photographers, the greatest crossover episode in history
Get a grip. They're just UA-camrs
took the words right out of thumbs
This is probably the most honest, unpretentious conversation between two photographers I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing. This conversation rises so much above others in every way. Wow! Extraordinary. Excellent. All I can say is more, more, more. A heartfelt thank you to both of you.
Nick's videos are indeed on point of everything... quality, edition, content, humor... IMO one of the finest youtube channel's out there.
Love this Thomas Heaton! Starting off with Nick was a great move. "Tethered" is a perfect name for this.
Good to hear two photographers with influence mentioning education. I'm Northumberland based & have started up a camera donation project, redeploying unused or unwanted photography gear to local schools. Got to encourage the yung'ns!
That hour passed by quickly 🙂 I would love to see a future chat between yourself and Ben Horne.
This! Get Ben on!
I'll third this comment as well!
Loved this! How about getting the F4 group together for an anniversary chat? (if you are still talking to one another). Maybe Kim Grant? Glyn Dewis? Morten Hilmer? BVS? Or maybe one with Charlotte for the real inside scoop?
Nick’s anecdote about a truck in front of his shot reminded me of when I was doing something similar, waiting with my eye to the viewfinder for a gap in the traffic. After I had taken the shot I saw a bus driver had stopped and waited for me, I waved thanks, she smiled and drove on.
Marvel: Infinity war is the most ambitious crossover event in history
Thomas: Hold my glass
Carver & Heaton - the FIRST thing I thought of was “this is like Batman v Superman! How cool! ” 🤣 (I know this is DC not Marvel, but still).
Perfect! We ALL love your self-deprecating style but I hope you know what a wonderful human being you are. Yes....we enjoyed a cocktail while watching you guys! Another van update would be fab!
This is so wonderful. Jules and I (Max) are watching simultaneously and love it so much. Thanks for doing what you’re doing, Nick and Thomas. Beautiful new format. You both are a tremendous inspiration for our channel as well. Keep doing what you’re doing. Greetings from at least two other introverts who needed to establish UA-cam personalities. ;)
I love your channel, the quality of content is incredible and several of your video's have resulted in new (old) equipment in my kit.
Like a Bronica SQ-B, Olympus XA, and a Pentax LX. Not to mention a superb Canon 50mm f/1.4, in L39 mount.
This is the photography love story I have been dreaming about ☺️♥️♥️ the two photographers on UA-cam I admire the most being tethered together. So happy watching and listening to this 😊
Been a fan of Nick's for a couple of years now. He's the best. The genuine article.
This is the second time of watching this video, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute (again). Nick C is probably my favourite "youtuber" he comes across as being so laid back and his manner is so authentic. Great choice for your first "tethered".
I seen all Nick's videos ,I don't even do film. Just love his attitude and it's great entertainment..Great show Thomas .Just remember to keep having fun.
Craig Roberts, e6 vlogs ? A very much more light hearted character , I believe has a publishing background, shooting for Mags ?
Talented all rounder !
What a great podcast, these two men have terrific speaking voices #1, their photography is superb and the conversation was easy to relate to. Love photography talk, and their shared interest in film photography...I miss that, makes me think it may be something to consider again in the future.
Fantastic start to what will hopefully become a regular show on your channel. Nick Carver seems like such a genuine dude. I’ve really enjoyed his videos over the last few years and was quite excited when I saw that he was your first guest. Well done!
Wow a collab I never thought would actually exist lol . Amazing! 🤍
Hope one day you both get together physically out in the field ⭐️
😮
There’s a Danish wildlife photographer Morten Hilmer who has a YT channel like you. Maybe you know him, his videos are addictive like yours and his perspective is so close to your philosophy as a photographer. Would be a great match you two talking about your work.
Love your work.
They actually did a short series together a few years ago
I second this, your video with Morten was a great watch. I would love it if you did another video of this style together 😊
An interview with Morten would be good.
@Geoffrey Simpson 👍 correction done 🇨🇵🇬🇧
Outstanding! I really enjoyed this and I look forward to seeing more. I read through the comments and so many great photographers were mentioned. The honesty of your efforts in getting to where you are now is really refreshing.
Glad you guys got together and shared this chat! I've followed both of you pretty much since the start and I've really enjoyed hearing about what my fellow photographers are experiencing. I can't tell you how much Nick Carver's course on Shooting in Manual has done for my understanding on getting the right exposure, which has helped both my architectural and landscape work. And Kudos to Thomas Heaton for his great videos and the journeys he's taken us on. Thanks to you both!
Thomas and Nick Carver! Heck yeah! Nick Carver is one of my favorite photographers. I am fortunate to live close to him. I hope to take a workshop with him one of these days.
Thomas I’d love to see you talk to Sean tucker. This is right up his alley
That would be a great chat. I think I could listen to that for well over an hour.
Great suggestion. Just started watching Sean Tucker.
That’s the same photographer that came to my mind. Very different styles and philosophies, which would make it a brilliant conversation.
Great to see you talking with Nick. I've followed him for a couple of years now and I think he has a wicked sense of humour. You both come across as genuine down to earth guys which I like. Good Job👍
Great stuff - really enjoyed it and would welcome more. Thanks for showing us the Nick Carver shots of the Paris shopfront - I agree, that shot of the dress is stupendous, burned into my retinas and photo memory bank
*Sits and waits for the inevitable Gavin Hardcastle episode* You know you're going to have to do it eventually. Best just pull the band-aid right off.
Please don't. He'll just sit there trying to be funny...
Yessss!!
@@AndyCurriePhotography thats mean. why being mean?
@@saschaf846 Why is it mean? If I don't like the guys presenting style (GH) then I'm allowed my opinion!
@@AndyCurriePhotography yes I get that. I just think not every (negative) opinion needs to be posted... :)
Tom you introduced me to Nick and I absolutely love his Vlogs he just needs to do more😉
Great video, Thomas. You and Nick are so similar in personality and style. Your honesty, transparency & vulnerability complement each other perfectly. Thanks for introducing Nick. I've now subscribed to his chanel. Keep on tethering, mate!
This was awesome guys! Thank you so much for sharing! You both have taught me so much, thanks again!
This is awesome. 2 of my favourite UA-cam channels combined! One suggestion: You might want to actually upload the audio as a real podcast to podcast platforms like Spotify, Google or Apple so we can listen in our cars or wherever we are.
Haha! It's time that we broke that curse :)
An hour of two of my favorite photographers. Great show and conversation. Thank you for this. I would love to see you and Peter McKinnon on Tethered. The name is prefect.
Hello Thomas, I absolutely love your youtube videos! I'm in the middle of watching a marathon of them. The things I like about them is watching your hiking and campground relaxing or sometimes desperately hiding from the weather elements. I also enjoy looking at your camping gear and your photography of course. I am very new to photography and I have learnt a few powerful hints from yourself to help my photos, one in particular is that it's better to be a minimalist than to try and get everything in a single photo. Please keep up with the excellent videos, I love them!
You can finish that conversation you had with Ben Horne when you were in Zion. He’s always great to listen to.
I'm thinking getting tethered with James Popsys might be interesting: another nice-seeming guy with some common interests, but notable differences, too (e.g almost never uses a tripod, often puts a person in his photos).
Excellent video. Thomas and Nick great. Looking forward to more! Thanks
Absolutely loved this! I remember watching a couple of Nick’s videos a long time ago and I have no idea why I wouldn’t have subscribed to his channel back then because I loved his work and style! Glad I came across it again through your channel today and I am now subscribed! 👍🏼😊 Really looking forward to videos of/from the new van! Best of luck with finishing the build, I am sure it will turn out amazing!
This was really nice!
If it would be possible: Please get Sean Tucker into the show!
owh that is a really nice suggestion. Please Thomas, do that!
would love to see you have a chat with Mads Peter Iverson or Andrew Marr. A very enjoyable hour Thomas and loved the fact it didnt go into a tech discussion
YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!! More of these please. Fantastic episode of my 2 favourites!
This was an awesome discussion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, triumphs, and downfalls. It was such a pleasure to hear the back stories of two of my favorite photographers. Cheers!
Been a fan of your and Nick's content for a while now, this was great, thank you! Future tethered collab suggestions: James Popsys, Nigel Danson :)
Get Chris Burkard on, that would be cool, as he can give his slant on surf/adventure photography. Nick was a great guest!
Nick is great! Would also love to see Chris!! He has a great vibe and Awsome photos!
Wonderful video, this is all I want, really, to listen to a conversation between two passionate photographers, so inspiring!. I wish I could watch this for the first time again.
This was wonderful to watch!...Thank You Thomas & Nick
This was great, here are my ideas for interviews:
Alyn Wallace, Dima Rogozhkin, James Popsys, Jamie Windsor, Kyle McDougall,
mitchellkphotos, Sean Tucker
Ben Horne!
Loved that Tom. Time just flew by. How about a chat with Murray from Scotland’s Mountains or Nick Livesey?
Forgot to add. As you’re a professional photographer and taking photos is work (annoying as it may be that you get to do it for a living😉) I can’t see any issue with you going out and vlogging. Although I can see that you may be a bit apprehensive of the welcome that you might get from local residents, and the tedium of having to explain that you are doing your job. Given the time of year it’s a bit awkward to be in and out before anyone else is aware you’ve been.
Excellent! Nice addition to your videos Thomas. Looking forward to the next podcast. Cheers from Texas!
Thank you for the share, it was such a great conversation. This time, I discovered your channel, Thomas, while I was on Nick’s. What goes around comes around! 🎉
That was fun and entertaining. Need to check out Nick's stuff.
I think Morten Hilmer would be an interesting guest because he does a lot of the camping and hiking but his subjects are mostly on the landscape (wildlife) and not the actual landscape. I would also like to see Greg Snell to talk about the videography side of creating.
Try contacting James Popsys, he would probably be up for this kind of thing.
Absolutely fantastic. I’m a loyal follower of both you and Nick. Looking forward to the next podcast!
Brilliant show, from two people I highly respect. Your attempts to describe why you both love shooting on film, are fascinating. I have started shooting film again after picking up my dad's old Olympus OM10 and seeing if it still worked... It's magic, and feels somehow more like the images are more "authentic", and a wonderful feeling to go back to techniques that take just a little more thought at the time of shooting.
Hope this series lasts a long time!
You should do one of these with fototripper. I mean, getting him drunk. What could go wrong? :D
I can only imagine what could happen. A video I would love to see.
hahaha that could be so nice and entertaining
No disrespect to Gavin but an interview with Amanda would be interesting me thinks 🙄😂
I would absolutely be up for this! My god, it would be hysterical.
Great new format. This with Sean Tucker would be a dream!
Agreed!
Agreed!
That was great...big fan of Nick, great first guest! Looking forward to the next one.
Love the episode. Great to heard from both you guys. Keep them coming. BEST!
Really enjoyed this Thomas, can we see you “Tethered” with your mate Simon Baxter?
A brilliant interview with a photographer that I have never seen his vlogs, algorithm failure. Could I suggest Adam from First Man Photography. He was actually the very first photographer I watched a UA-cam video of and since then i watch a lot.
Yes, I like Adam as well.
Adam is excellent
I knew this would happen sooner or later, I've followed both of you for years.
This is one of the most enjoyable photography related videos I've watched in a long
time, love the series title and in my opinion you couldn't have picked a better guest to
start this series with.
Love it, love it, love it, Tom.
Most interesting video I've watched on utube, great general chat about photography and life in general. I couldn't walk away. More please.
Only issue with Nick is he doesn't post enough. Ha, love his channel
"The power of high-viz" is no joke.
I might try it!
I'm trying this.
I often ride my bike to a photo location, I guess I should just leave it on? Haha
I wear hi vis all day long. Im yet to feel the power.
@@tallaganda83 you're using it all wrong.
If you don't believe in it, it'll never work.
(Unless you're one of those who have always had the power and don't know what it's like without it. If that's the case, take the high-viz off and *you shall see* )
What a great idea. And with Nick to start off. What a great combination. Been a fan of both of you for years now.
This is great to see. Amazing how we find people on UA-cam and they all come together : Nick, Nick, Adam, Mads, Thomas, et al. Great photographers. Great people.
Wow, You invented a Podcast to get him on huh... It paid off.. LOL. Admire your persistence
Nick Carver -- greatest photography story-teller.
Nick Carver rocks! Love his channel! Thanks for this conversation!
Nice concept. Nick is a great first guess. Love his work.
Nick could make anything interesting.... Just so happens he does photography... I hate whisky, but he makes me want to buy a bottle lol 🤣🤣
same 😂
That's so true.
Me too!
In the spirit of constructive feedback. You seemed to be looking “down” presumably because of the position on the screen. I tip I’ve used for work conf calls like this is to shrink the video chat window as small as can be and drag it to the top of your screen right under the webcam. That way it keeps the eye line up high during conversation. Hope that’s helpful. This was excellent!
great tip - will have to give that a try on zoom calls!
He was using his usual camera then looking down at his laptop.
My two favorite vloggers. Like Superman & Batman! Your honesty and candor have shown me that I'm not the only one that feels (fill in the blank) when shooting. Can't wait for Season Two.
Brilliant - two dedicated and talented photographers / educators, having a refreshingly honest conversation. Great kickoff to this idea!
Nick is my favourite, sorry Thomas..
Thomas heaton is my fav sorry unsung hero
@@anshulsharma100 Haha, yeah that´s allright Anshul, it was bit of a cheesy comment from me. Having now just watched it, I must say it was brilliant. Can´t believe I spent an hour just now - best entertainment since sliced bread! Thanks Thomas!
Mine too
I'd be interested in seeing you chat with Henry Turner. He's earlier in his career shooting than you, and has a much more outgoing personality. It would be an interesting combination.
Fantastic idea.! And even better first guest.. Nick Craver is such a amazing photographer.!!
The best!! Two of my favorite photographers!! Can't wait to see more.💖
Awesome forum and results Thomas! Keep up the excellent work!
I have followed Nick for some time now and enjoy his work very much. Excellent photographer, effective teacher and fun to be "around" behind the glass. Put him in your rotation!
This is so fantastic. Two great photographers. Will save for the weekend and a dram.
Great show Tom! It was super chill and both of you were really natural with it. I can definitely relate to the awkwardness of having to film UA-cam videos in crowded areas, cause I've done that more than I'd like to, lol.
It's interesting though, that both you and nick have the same feelings about having the wives around (or anyone helping I suppose). I feel the opposite. When my wife quit her job and started being my camera lady for the videos, I think it actually made me more comfortable, because she helped me be more relaxed and more myself. I guess the difference is that she's a photographer too, and my business partner, so she's not just tagging along, she's working too, and I think that really helped/helps me. Like when we have to go out to film in crowded areas, if she's there I can just focus on her and talk to her behind the camera and it helps me forget (or try to at least) all the other people around. Anyways, great stuff man, I'm really looking forward to more of this style from you!
I have been following for a couple of years now. I like it that you are not afraid to recognize talent where there is talent. Particularly, I like how you are comfortable praising the work of other photographers and recommending other UA-camrs. I started following Nick Carver after you recommended him. You are a good person. You will do well. Thank you for the great content!
Thank you for this! What a conversation! I really appreciate it!
Thoroughly enjoyable time spent with two people whose work I admire and who’s ethics I appreciate.
Awesome Gentlemen. Long time subscriber to both channels. Thank you. One of the most enjoyable videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. Nice job Thomas. Fine interview.
Thanks Thomas for the talk with Nick. He is a genuine guy and has a dry humor that is great. It is satisfying to see younger photographers appreciate film. Being in my 70's I spent nearly 50 years in the darkroom and had a real love of the process. I always enjoy your videos and your outlook on photography. It is always good to see another photographer coming down the trail with enthusiasm and the anticipation that comes with exploration.
Loved this podcast. Great conversation and sharing of adventures, expertise, and good whisky. Thanks for sharing. Definitely appreciate the honesty and vulnerability.
That was a great episode. I loved the honesty and openness. Great job.
Congrats man. Incredible content in this channel. The interview with Nick Carver has been stunning. Keep on with this quality on your videos
Mate , I'm a big fan and I love your work , but this is some of the best content you have ever put out ! I am really looking forward to future episodes , and yes , I have now subscribed to Nick's chanel.
Absolutely fabulous. Best video/podcast I have watched in years. This HAS to be a success and I look forward to many more - and I have now subscribed to Nick's channel. I spent over 40 years with film and almost all of it with medium and large format. I have also been yearning to go back to film but unfortunately the trend back to film has not reached South Africa yet (if it ever will) and at the moment is simply not a viable option. Well done Sir Thomas.
I wasn’t expecting a collaboration between the two Bob Ross’s of of photography UA-cam. This is just wonderful!
Fantastic stuff Thomas. Always watch both yours and Nick’s films. Keep it up
Great podcast Thomas, very genuine and interesting conversation. I think you will bring out the best in any guest you have.
Getting to know a little more about a person helps me appreciate their photography a little more. Thanks Thomas... great concept and great video.
A good title and a good natter you just can't beat it, I enjoyed that, well done and thank you!
That was a fantastic start to a new direction for your channel. Thanks.
