this one a bit tricky to take apart but its very similar to the trident which I have a video on what the inside looks like, anyway yes you cna remove the spring to make it manu8al, as long as you adjust the tension on the pivot screw you will be fine and still enjoy the folder...
Literally just bought this knife on eBay for $49.99 shipped. Thanks for the review. I base MANY of my purchases on you and Nutn's reviews. Hope CBP doesn't end the reviews. Keep up the good work Jeff.
most assisted knives use a coil spring or spring bar that can just be removed, BUT I dont have opersonal expereince with CRKT assisted knives other than a M4 I own, but I have never taken it apart to see how it works, I have ALOT of vbideos to amke, but if I cna find time maybe Ill amke a video takling it apart to show how CRKT makes their assisted models
The black on black is awesome. Thinking seriously about getting this knife at some point. Just got the SOG Flash 1 as a warranty replacement for the blink. SOG has awesome customer service.
Love this knife it has been my everyday carry for over a year. Not the cheapest but it isnt like most other knives i have owned that get loose and wobbly over time and use. This blade is easy to sharpen holds it pretty good i guess. The black finish wears off over time but it holds up. Love the weight and the ability to open and close single handed. Nice review pointed out thing i never noticed like the notch for the thumb stud. My index finger sits on the other cut out as my thumb flips the blade like it alot.
I store them closed, this is more true with italian stilettos that have leaf springs, but yes any sring or tension on metal cna make them weak over tiem, it woudl just take a long time, so far I ahve never had a rpoblem with assisted knives stored closed...
My Aegis Blk/Satin came in the mail today. After I ordered saw vids where they said a lot of blade play. Really worried me. So as I opened it today 7/6/2010 that;s the 1st item I checked. NO blade play, left to right, up or down. Beautiful knife. Opens super fast & no blade play. Im' impressed. Luv the Aegis
actually they offered and I think stiull do offer a BG42 blade to upgrade your 112 in their custom shop...Not sure what they charge but you cna send in your buck112 or sort of build your own with different options, again in their custom shop, googfle buck custom shop..thats one knife on the LONG list of wanted knives...a Buck 112 w/nickle silver bolsters, buffalo horn scales, and a BG42 blade...
I want to comment on SOG AUS 8. Its actually AUS 8-A. They have a proprietary cryogenic heat treat process. Their steel performs VERY well. It will hold an edge quite a long time..... almost as long as CM154.
I find the assisted SOG knives are somewhat of a crap shoot, so far most of the assisted models I had came with VERY little if any bladeplay, but I had a trident that had vetrical play which I sent back...so some do some dont...my aegis did not, it came very tight!
Ill agree there, AUS8 is better then 420, 440A, 440B, , AUS4, AUS6, and a few others that escape my mind right now...not thwe worst at all...and by better I simply meant stronger and will hold an edge longer...if all the names steels have the same heat treatment that is...in some cases like Bucks 420HC, they REALLY do a great job heat treatign their steels so I found thats the best version of 420HC on the market, just my opinion, bucks got it right with that!
A good trick for closing any sog knife that locks up like the Aegis (Flash, Flash 2, Trident, etc...) is to pull the lock back and push it closed with your leg, then right into the pocket, its the fastest way to close the knife and put it away. I did this with my Flash 2 before I sold it.
Hey man GREAT review =] I just ordered this knife the other day, still waiting for it haha. I got the same model as you have, but with a satin blade. AE-01 i believe. I cant wait =] 5/5 on the review. Btw, along with the Aegis I'm getting two other knives and will be reviewing them. So keep an eye out man =] I'm back lol
I woudl say yes absolutley more grippy than the finger choil on the griptilioan, BUT I prefer the griptilian models over this for an overal knife, mainyl for the 154CM steel and axis lock, but this is close behind...
I bought my Aegis at LeBaron, it's perfectly legal to own in Toronto as long as you use it as a utility knife. As the Canadian criminal code defines it (paraphrasing): switch blades have a button on the handle which deploys the blade. Since the Aegis uses thumb studs, it's actually legal despite the fact that it's an assisted open knife.
I have owned more than 10 leeks,l at one point I collected every version of the leek, scallion, and chive, anyway, every single leek I onwed or handled had a tiny bit of side to side play...
I've gotta chime in on the blade play thing. I've owned three different Kershaw Speed-Safe knives and none of them have had any play in the blade when locked open. Even the Cyclone, which I'm still having a issue with the Speed-Safe switch, locks up super tight. Both Leeks a black/blue one and a stainless one, locked up great, and even my Skyline (just a flipper) locks great with no side to side blade play. That said, all those knives have liners (one on the lockside for the Skyline).
I too am a knife fanatic :D I collect them and look over features, technical stuff and then try them out. I must say, in which I hope you agree, that Buck is a fantastic brand, especially if you love the woods, hunting and generally need a knife for practical use. Anyway! Good video :D
I picked up an Aegis yesterday after watching yours and nutnfancy's reviews on it; thanks for the info, I'm very happy with my purchase. That being said, I think it's actually easier to close with the left hand rather than the right, by manipulating the arc lock with the middle finger, and depressing the blade with the index finger allowing your thumb to remain in place with a firm grip on the knife. My $0.02
Love all your videos (I learned the balisong 'full twirl' from you) - just to let you know, over here in the UK the black blade SOG Aegis is £99.00 which is $149.40.! OUCH!!!!
@partyfrog69 Why not? The thumb stud is ambidextrous, and its easier for a left handed person to release the lock with their left pointer finger, than a right hander with their thumb.
great knife, although i did put some small amounts of Skate Board tape in some areas that will assist me when grasping the unit when wet and/or during blade extension..
i totally agree with you...kershaw knives don't have have the side to side wiggle.. Sog's do have side to side play that being said I love the Flash 1. Even with the side to side play it still cut's zip ties, wires, rope, and cardboard..i haven't used it on food or humans yet..so i'm not sure for hunting or self defense.
@1dducks The AEGIS doesn't have a Arc Lock. I called SOG and they CS rep said it's a different kind of lock. Arc has a specific rating, not sure what the lock on the Aegis has. Check the Sog site. The Aegis is not listed in the Arc Lock section
I'm torn. I can't decide whether to get the Aegis or Ontario Rat 1. I like the Rat1 for the Price/value but I like the Aegis for its deep pocket clip and light weight.
The only major gripe I have about SOG (and I do like my digicamo Aegis btw) is the fact that they put their logo everywhere...on the blade itself (especially the monogram editions), on the inserts, on the clip, etc...yeah SOG, we get it. Also, I love the bayonet style clip...but if you have tan khakis on or light blue jeans, and people have heard of SOG, they can still tell you have a knife on you because "SOG" gives it away. It one can make out the logo, it defeats the purpose.
I am fairly positive that spring assisted knives are legal in all of the U.S. However, I do know that they are legal in Mi and many other states. Also, I know that spring assisted knives are not considered to be switchblades (which are illegal in many states).
Where do you purchase you SOG knives? I heard a lot about blade play on verious SOG models, is it a problem on the Aegis? Great video and i will keep watching!
@cutlerylover should I buy this knife, or the SOGzilla and Kershaw OSO Sweet for about the same price? I'm new to knife collecting/using and I do not know what to get.
Forgive my ignorance (and this may sound really ignorant), I'm still pretty new to knives, but do smudges show up on the TiNi finish? I've owned the AE-01 with the satin finish for a few weeks right now and one of my few beefs is the amount of time I have to spend wiping prints of the blade. Also, regarding the lock up, I've felt a little vertical play; it hasn't involuntarily closed with any of my efforts but I am a little concerned. Is there a certain amount I should be willing to live with?
One comment I have is you state "all spring assisted knives have blade play side to side." Just wanted to let you know my kershaw scallion has none at all. zero blade play. Just wanted to let you know, although I think you have a review on it... Anyway thanks for all the reviews!
i have a question about sharpening systems. i've heard that carbide sharpeners strip too much metal off of your blade and you shouldnt use them. any truth behind that?
i had one of these on my recent deployment. the spring that holds the lock forward got kinked and the knife wouldnt stay locked. not too happy with it in that regard and with the fact that it has blade play. other than that i liked it.
@cutlerylover the blade retention is just super hard and the action is crappy. when i open and close it i hear a lot of rubbing. i played with the pivot but didnt have much luck. ive cracked it open and put on my creative thinking cap. i know it might not be worth a lot of work, but i really do love the blade and overall shape. ill report back if i have any bright ideas.
Mine has a bit of blade play after about two weeks of use. The tip is quite weak. Screws are getting lose on the knife. I give this a knife 3.5 stars out of 5. It's a beautiful knife though and is razor sharp out of the box.
I know all about the CQD I owned both the auto and the manula version and its way too bulky, microtechs on the other hands are much more comfortable in hand even the fukll size socoms...
Is anyone else's lock starting to fail? I've had my Aegis since August and while I admit to playing with it a lot I am worried about it's ability to remain deployed and locked. It doesn't always fail, but I find that lately, I've had to push the lock forward to get the best results, I think the spring behind the lock is starting to wear out.
@mdvvi How is it that I was able to purchase this knife from a knife store in Vancouver, while an RCMP officer was in there also browsing? If they're not legal, how can they sell them?
LOL yes SOG does stand for studies and observations group but they were a spec ops team in the vietnam war not an equipment company. They were sent in when the U.S didn't want anyone to know they were there, similar to navy seals exept everything the SOG teams carried was sanitized so if they were ever captured no one would know who they were. They caried a special knife called the SOG Bowie. Once the group was disbanded a seperate company made a knife company based off the SOG Bowie design.
Great knife. But if you can spare maybe another 40, get a Tomcat 3. THAT is a really cool knife. If you need a serious user, get a Spyderco Police 3 G10 if your area allows for blades over 4 inches.
simply, full flat is sharper with less resistance, double bevel is thicker so more strength and more grind options. such as convex. hard to do on a full flat ground blade.
i had really high hopes for this knife, but was let down. from your vid, i notice that my safety is red.. makes me wonder if i have one that came from a sub-par run.
Hi, one another complaint: your camera is focused on the table the entire time! ...knife is blurred otherwise you're good... enthusiastic and knowledgeable
this one a bit tricky to take apart but its very similar to the trident which I have a video on what the inside looks like, anyway yes you cna remove the spring to make it manu8al, as long as you adjust the tension on the pivot screw you will be fine and still enjoy the folder...

my favorite knife of all time ❤️☠️
I'm glad they include the locks. I used to not use them, but I got a gnarly gash from my flash II the other day when it opened in my pocket.
Love this knife it has been my everyday carry for over a year. Not the cheapest but it isnt like most other knives i have owned that get loose and wobbly over time and use. I have an EOD powerlock to review, just not enough time in the day to review everythgin, lol...in due time I promise Ill review it...

I had to go check but the site is not loading properly, I remember seeing BG42 ofered before but they may have changed that?
Just ordered this knife! Super excited for it to come in! Thanks for the video! Reassurred me that I was making a good choice!
I agree, apples and oranges...BUT you cna compare this to say most speed safe kershaws...
actually they offered and I think stiull do offer a BG42 blade to upgrade your 112 in their custom shop...Not sure what they charge but you cna send in your buck112 or sort of build your own with different options, again in their custom shop, googfle buck custom shop..thats one knife on the LONG list of wanted knives...a Buck 112 w/nickle silver bolsters, buffalo horn scales, and a BG42 blade...
@cryptomnesiac Sorry to hear it, what was your issue with the knife?
I want to comment on SOG AUS 8. Its actually AUS 8-A. They have a proprietary cryogenic heat treat process. Their steel performs VERY well. It will hold an edge quite a long time..... almost as long as CM154.
Ill agree there the deep clip is not the easiest to get out of the pocket
I've got the digi-camo version and i love it!What a very cool knife, SOG is a very unique knife company.
This is a great knife. I got one for christmas and carry it every day. Very very useful! And it's razor sharp out of the box

Aegis is the name of the shield that Zeus gave to his daughter Athena, the goddess of war.

I would love to see a review on the Aegis Mini!
there are so many good companies out there for you to try, problem is once you get one model you'll want others, lol...

Bought one of these for $65 at the Valley Forge Convention center, I love it so far.
great review i want it love the spring loaded blade 3 and a half inches is the perfect knife
I have the digi cam version. Great knife. Love the blade shape!
great knife, although i did put some small amounts of Skate Board tape in some areas that will assist me when grasping the unit when wet and/or during blade extension..
im pretty sure spring assisted are illegal in th UK, but that looks really satisfying to open..
Cool looking knife. Always liked SOG knives even though I have never owned one.
i totally agree with you...kershaw knives don't have have the side to side wiggle.. Sog's do have side to side play that being said I love the Flash 1. Nice vid Jeff. You should try and do a video on different ways you can deal non-knife people sometime.
blade locks open fine for me
The only major gripe I have about SOG (and I do like my digicamo Aegis btw) is the fact that they put their logo everywhere...on the blade itself (especially the monogram editions), on the inserts, on the clip, etc...yeah SOG, we get it.

He's mentioned the Edge Pro Apex, but that is expensive. I like a diamond rod, the one I use is made by Lansky. $10 - $15
I still think the Kershaw Blur and Cyclone blow this away, what do you think?
I just bought a SOG Flash 1 and I love it !
hey jeff i was watching this review and was wondering what were your thoughts on the tanto version of this blade any oppinions would be welcome
My Aegis folded on me. Some say it was because the screw at the top needed to be tightened, but none the less, I returned the knife.
Hey Jeff,
Fantastic review!
Thank you!
5 STARS
pen knives generally are non locking slip joints. Call your local PD and ask they should be able to inform you.
Aren't spring assisted knives illegal in california? I'm not sure about it so I just wanted to know.
I am fairly positive that spring assisted knives are legal in all of the U.S. However, I do know that they are legal in Mi and many other states. Also, I know that spring assisted knives are not considered to be switchblades (which are illegal in many states).
Get rid of all the SOG stamping and blade play. Add machined aluminum handles, with S30V blade steel and that'd be a fantastic knife.
Where do you purchase you SOG knives? I heard a lot about blade play on verious SOG models, is it a problem on the Aegis? Great video and i will keep watching!

Can the spring assist be removed?
One comment I have is you state "all spring assisted knives have blade play side to side." Just wanted to let you know my kershaw scallion has none at all. zero blade play. Just wanted to let you know, although I think you have a review on it... Anyway thanks for all the reviews!
Really enjoyed your review (5/5), very informative. I would buy this knife based on your rating. Thank you.
i have a question about sharpening systems. i've heard that carbide sharpeners strip too much metal off of your blade and you shouldnt use them. any truth behind that?
Do you feel the arc lock is as strong and secure as the axis lock? Does it work the same?
Sog Flash II Vs. Aegis Vs. Tenacious Which one would you choose?
AUS 8 STEEL IS THIS STEEL MADE IN USA>? ALSO SOG KNIVES ARE KINDA CONFUSING WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING A DISCENT ANSWER...ARE THE MADE IN USA OR NOT??/
that is a cool knife.. btw are ya getting every knife u can before they actually ban em and stop the production?
i had one of these on my recent deployment. the spring that holds the lock forward got kinked and the knife wouldnt stay locked. not too happy with it in that regard and with the fact that it has blade play. other than that i liked it.
This isnt a swithblade...Im in the USA...this is whats known as an assisted opening knife...
I have an Aegis but lost it. Think this is a good reason to buy the black one. :)
I've actually voided my warranty by opening my knife, but I fixed it, and it's working perfectly.
i cant figure out if i should get the black handle or camo
more grippy? even than the GRIPtilian?
whitch is better? the sog aegis, the sog flash 2, or the sog twitch XL
Mine has a bit of blade play after about two weeks of use. The tip is quite weak. Screws are getting lose on the knife. I give this a knife 3.5 stars out of 5. It's a beautiful knife though and is razor sharp out of the box.
cool review!
at some time could you do a review on the Buck Strider 889BK please thanks.
looks good. Love open assisted.
I know all about the CQD I owned both the auto and the manula version and its way too bulky, microtechs on the other hands are much more comfortable in hand even the fukll size socoms...

what kind of sharpener do you use for any kind knifes?
Im torn between this and a CRKT M16-13SF!
About the same price too... damn!
simply, full flat is sharper with less resistance, double bevel is thicker so more strength and more grind options. such as convex. hard to do on a full flat ground blade.
i had really high hopes for this knife, but was let down. from your vid, i notice that my safety is red.. makes me wonder if i have one that came from a sub-par run.
Hey Cutlerylover, what knife would you recommend the most for
EDC?
my leek has no play and i didnt have to adjust it and my blur doesnt have any either
That magnifying glass....I NEED ONE.
Man this is a great vid thanks for all you do. Stay safe
haha...yeah
Hey Jeff . I'm wondering is this is possible. I found SOG Flash tanto new for 20 $ . Is it fake or it's just the low price ? ? ? Thanks in advance
where is this knife made
?
would like an edc update please.
Hi, one another complaint: your camera is focused on the table the entire time! ...knife is blurred
otherwise you're good... enthusiastic and knowledgeable
im a big fan of sog i have the trident tanto black tini i think this is the next one im going to get
I'll be getting this soon thanks to this review
Is this knife's assisted system legal in Wisconsin?
