    A few tidbits:
1.) The route north of 494 to 694 was actually constructed by the County, not MnDOT. Hence all of tight exit ramps and closely spaced interchanges (especially at 394 and 55).
2.) Don't expect any extra lanes on this route anytime soon. MnDOT by 2019 will see it's construction budget cut by 50% due to the expiration of the 2008 transportation bill. The organization is in pure maintenance mode and has no money to add any lanes. Even today very few projects are adding lanes (610 between 94 and CR 81, 694 between Snelling and 35E, and 494 between 55 and 694) are the only exceptions that have been funded by special legislative allocations versus the standard funding sources.

Nice video. I can tell during the video that the area has a numbers of hills and trees. I visited the TC a decade ago, but I need to check it out again. Keep up the great work!

My house is in the thumbnail. That's pretty great
Also I'd been meaning to film this stretch for about three years now but never got around to finishing it. I even have half the exit signs in a folder somewhere on my external drive. Glad to see you have a nice, finished product here. I always find your tidbits interesting, too.

I used to live in Edina and frequented 169. Easily my favorite road in The Cities. Keep the good videos coming!

Very nice video! I can see why this freeway would get congested during peak hours...it's a nicely constructed route, but appears to be in need of more lanes? Loved the sign work, as always.

+FreewayBrent Thanks Brent. This winter they'll be closing down this route north of Edina for a couple years so here's hoping they add an extra lane here and there.

That was pretty awesome. Does anyone remember when a plane landed on 169 in Champlin 25-30 years ago? It just popped into my mind now.

I was just on 169 the past weekend for Valleyfair. Something I noticed that I'm not sure other people do is in Hopkins/Edina, the highway feels kinda wavy, lol. You can somewhat see starting around 3:51. Might just be my car :P

+roth1038 They'll be rebuilding that whole area very soon. Hwy 100 is another one thats extremely wavy.

I’m not sure why US-169 is only a 4-Lane Freeway through the Twin Cities. Doesn’t this highway get backed up often?

  • @2016Ford

it like Illinois State Route 53 from I90 to Lake-Cook Rd

Nice video as always! seems like 8-10 (thru) lane freeways in the Twin Cities are ultra rare! Hopefully, for your sake, people actually know how to drive on those tight, weavy freeways; no way off peak congestion is uncommon by the way they look!

    • @eluko79
      @eluko79  9 років тому

+Schwenda Productions Thanks. They are rare. Apart from the interstates, I cant think of any that have more than 3 lanes. But man we sure got a lot of them.

your post is old so who knows if you'll see this, but one thing to keep in mind compared to most places - since we have so many lakes, ponds, rivers and wetlands to avoid when we plan roads, there are actually a series of freeways besides the Interstates, like 169 here, which happens to be a really convenient road for me to take if I'm heading up towards the Brainerd area or South towards the various stores that way (Microcenter, Mall of America, etc). Whereas some cities like Denver have the city streets and the main freeway but not much else, you get really bad gridlock. Here, we always have at least a few routes to choose from, and based on concert or sports schedule will know to avoid the ones approaching the downtowns etc. We do get rush hour, and right after a bad snowstorm traffic is slow compared to normal - but do realize that this stretch of 169 in the video is mostly posted at 60 MPH... yet the standard speed is 65-70, and you will still have a few cars passing at that speed. When the weather is nice, or even in the winter once the roads are reasonably clear again, we're zipping around. :D
The reality is, most drivers in MN are much better than other places, although many have become lazy SOBs about using their blinkers in recent years, we have to deal with snow, ice, and black ice regularly that cripples most states; we just slow down for a day or two and then shrug it off until next time. :P

+train snake, It’s the End of the Freeway. That part of US-169 becomes an Expressway so it can have At-Grade Intersections and Traffic Signals.
