      Hey, you do not need to two hand to pull off unsheathed. You can do it with a shield in hand as long as its has no art, or the ash No Art on the shield, from the npc at the war masters shack, if it has parry or some other shield art..then you have your shield for defense and just L2 to sheathe to do unsheathed...try it, its nice having that shield with it....thx for the vid.

    • @JoeySkidz
      @JoeySkidz 2 роки тому +20

      That's because this game lacks weapons lol. The Uchi and longbow are basically best items you can get from the get go making the rest of the game not as rewarding in my opinion... I used to love searching for chunks and stuff to craft a certain type of weapon but with this game they made it very basic and much easier for the Masses as far as that aspect goes

    • @voidabstraction
      @voidabstraction 2 роки тому +30

      @@JoeySkidz Basically every enemy can drop their weapon and armour. There are quite few weapons around the early area and that pretty much increases as you go on.
      I think the actual difference is with ashes of war etc every weapon is much better compared to DS. The main thing I've noticed is the starting gear is a bit more important in terms of not being able to easily find it for other classes. In DS3 for example you could pretty much buy most of the starting weapons at the start. I've only found a few classes starting gear so far from merchants or looted from enemies.

    Really enjoying playing as the Samurai class, the Unsheathe ability really cuts through the bad guys like a hot knife through butter. One thing I just discovered - if you equip the Brass Shield you can use Unsheathed and block with a shield simultaneously. The Brass Shield has no Skill attached to it, so if you combine it with the Uchigatana, then L2 defaults to Unsheathed. I’ve found this a lot easier and smoother than having to fiddle around with the two hands button combo, especially during bosses as you can keep your shield up and get in those opportunistic Unsheathed attacks!

    • @oph1066
      @oph1066 2 роки тому +3

      I am not far in and no souls expert. so where do you get the unsheath from? I have a wind stomp thing ATM am I going to be able to swap it to unsheath or have I messed it up?

    • @swamphag
      @swamphag 2 роки тому +23

      @@oph1066 Unsheathed is the default skill that is applied to your Uchigatana - it's the skill that's mapped to L2. You shouldn't need to obtain it. If you equip the uchigatana without a shield / hold with two hands, then the onscreen skill prompt should change to Unsheathed. Unless you've somehow overwritten the skill with something else, it should definitely be there.

      Just east of the storm hill shack where you get the jelly fish summon, there is a place called warmaster shack. He sells ashes of war. Buy his "no skill" ash. If you go to gatefront ruins and loot the chest at the bottom of a set of stairs you can apply ashes of war to gear at any grace point. After doing these 2 things you can apply no skill to any shield, staff, torch, bow, etc. This allows you to have something in each hand and let's you do the ashes of war of your primary hand.

    I've been testing each starting class out for around 5-6 levels each just to get the feel for how they'll play (naturally each and every one can be changed down the line, but I like to stay close to their starting archtype to keep with a theme...), and I find the Samurai is indeed the best class for beginners, and looking down the line can be an incredible bleed machine at endgame. Early on, Unsheath is *almost* broken.

    I'm an absolute die hard Souls devotee and I've always preferred STR/DEX builds and that's why I picked the Samurai. I love playing a more defensive way and also using pyro and STR/DEX builds are great for that if you use light armor and dodge a lot. It's all risk reward though because it definitely makes you a lot easier to kill quickly in boss fights.

    As someone who started off with Samurai, you've pretty much hit the nail on the head when it comes to this class. Some other things to mention is in regarding the parrying technique with the shield to stagger your opponent to get some critical hits in as well as equipping the green turtle talisman to increase your stamina recovery speed since you'll be relying a lot on getting hits in as well as dodge rolling to increase the distance between you and your foe. Other than that, this is a great explanation. Keep up the good work.

    I haven't finished the video yet, so forgive me if you already said this, but the huge advantage the Sam has to me over other classes is it's potential for flexibility for hybrid classes. It, along with Vagabond has the lowest stats combined in int/faith/arcane, all of which are viable secondary stats for hybrid classes. Meaning if you are stuck and unsure which secondary stat you want, when at comes to respeccing you should still be fairly optimized if you want to respec at a later point. In contrast, if you want to respec something like Prisoner, which starts with 14 in INT, you are pretty much locked in to INT even if you respec unless you are willing to waste 6-7 points. Same with Bandit for Arcane and Prophet for Faith. You are locked into their respective main stats. In other words, if you are still on the fence or just want the flexibility to respec at a later point (assuming you are good with DEX as your physical stat and not STR), Samurai is the class for you. You're pretty much always optimal if you respec to either a ARC or FTH hybrid build, and only slightly behind Prisoner if you decide to go INT with your secondary stat. No other class has this much flexibility really.

      i'm gonna do a Dex/faith character, but i can't decide between Confessor or samurai as my starting class.
      confessor gets me right in there with an armor set i like and the miracle catsing catalyst.
      but if i pick samurai i get a better starting weapon, but i don't know how hard it will be to obtain a faith catalyst and miracles.
      also.... does the confessor have bad starting stats somehow? i don't really get that part, ppl keep saying samurai is good for dex/faith cause of stats, but i don't really see why.

    • @ggg21201
      @ggg21201 2 роки тому +1

      @@lillewilleman It's because of their stats in arcane and int, which both are 9 and 9 respectively. Contrast that with Samurai which has 9 and 8 respectively, so one less. If you are going for a dex/faith build, you will not be pumping either int or arcane, so you want those to be as low as possible. All of the other stats (str, vigor, endurance, mind, etc) all will need at least a couple points in them so it's not a big deal to have some starting point in those stats. Most weapons will need at least a little bit of str to meet their minimum requirement. You will need some vigor to stay alive. You will need some Mind for the FP. Endurance for the Stamina. Etc. But as a Dex/Faith build, Int and Arcane or essentially useless to you, and any points you put in them would be wasted so you want them to be as low as possible. So Samurai comes out ahead since as I mentioned, 9+8 is lower than 9 + 9 in their useless stats (INT and ARC). 1 wasted stat point isn't a HUGE deal though so if you like the look of Confessor I'd still go with it. What's more of a problem is when you start wasting a bunch of points like what I was trying to explain in my original comment. If you go Prisoner and decide to respec to DEX/FTH or DEX/ARC, you are wasting a TON of points in INT because it's base stats will always have 14 in INT if you respec. If you pick prisoner you are essentially locked into DEX/INT. With Samurai you have a ton more options if you want to respec. You could go full DEX or you could go DEX/INT, DEX/FTH, or DEX/ARC at respec. The only one that wouldn't be completely optimized is DEX/INT as Prisoner would beat it, but it's only a couple points so it's not that bad.

    Just some clarification, you can use a shield and use unsheathe you just need to make sure it's not a parry shield or has a skill. Like Brass Shield which is a 100% phys shield. That's what I use since the guard counters are very strong and useful often. Also that Ashes of War that does no skill. Unsheathe is so nutty, the burst damage you can do with a 3-4 hit into a heavy Unsheathe (vertical slash) is gross. I've been able to insta phase bosses or skip phase transitions from my testing. So good, I love how strong bleed is in this.

    Great video - super helpful thank you. One thing - you CAN use Unsheathe when using the katana one hand + shield. What's important is there is no skill on the shield (either one you've put on yourself, or an innate one like "Parry"). I use medium shields with 100% physical block and if there is no skill on it ....BAM, you get to Unsheathe with the katana! If you want to keep weight low, I can recommend the "Eclipse Crest Heater Shield" or if you can spare a little more weight, even the bog standard "Brass Shield" is great.

    Adding a strike type weapon like a flail to this build will allow you to take on the majority of enemies in this game without losing damage output due to resistance to slash damage a lot seem to have. You can obtain one early in the Gatefront Ruins in Limgrave from one of the coaches you can loot. It requires 10 str and 18 dex with a D and C scaling respectively until you are able to change it to Keen, where is becomes E and B. This and the Nightrider Flail (obtained from a Night's Fury) are excellent damage dealers and both have the bleed effect. The Nightrider has a slightly slower swing but puts out more damage than the flail.

    I completely agree. The Uchigatana is amazing.
    I picked the Samurai more or less by accident. I didn't really know what to play, and then later I found out you can get all the other weapons and armors from stores. Or the kind of weapons from enemies. The Uchigatana, not.
    Even when not having mastered the special attack, its attacks are a little bit faster than the great swords, But still have some really good damage.
    One of the big drawbacks of the Dex play is that you miss out the str weapons you get early on at the first play through. But you don't need them. As the common looking Katana is such a sweet weapon. And you want to use the bow.
    The only thing I want to add is that having a shield can also very good. The problem is balancing the weight to stay in medium weight class. For some of the knights it's better to hide behind a shield than to jump around like a mad rabbit.

    Played Astrologer my first time. This is my first Souls game. Got the Plat 2wice with Astrologer and now I’m trying out Samurai just for fun. It’s definitely an adjustment.

    Something to note, to use " Unsheathe" you can also do it one handed if your off hand has nothing in it.

    You can use a shield and still get Unsheathe. Just go buy the no-skill ashes (from Warmaster, almost due north from the start) and remove parry from the shield so that Unsheathe is always available.

    Glad to see my build is pretty much inline with what you propose. I pumped DEX to 30 and STR to 25, working on Vigor and Endurance at the moment (both at 18). The bleed is just too good to pass on especially when I get to play with 2 friends, one of whom is using a cleric tank build and the other dual-wielding claws and using poison arrows.
    The charge heavy is usually good enough to land twice on squatting giants, sending them to the ground to be hacked to pieces easily. And the high DEX build makes sure your ranged attacks always stay useful even as your melee destroys the rest. I'm enjoying the dodge gameplay of the Samurai more than turtling behind a shield but I'll definitively be trying another character later and try either a mage or tank build.

      I'm surprised you can't just use an ash of war that has a parry on it to change it so it has a parry instead of unsheathe. Either that or have it like how DS3 had it, where u had to time the unsheathe/hold to parry with literally the same Uchigatana.

    Honestly, I had switched out the original Ash of War to Impaling Thrust, after buying it from merchant. I tried using the original, and yeah it's cool and quick, handy for some encounters, but when used it against Tree Sentinel I felt it too slow and didn't give enough damage. The thrust, I think, works better since it's piercing, maybe a little faster or slower I'm not sure, but the damage output is much more, especially when it's put on Keen. And I think it's able to repeat the attack in a quicker succession than the original.

    I'm 12 hours in the game, got the Royal Remains armor set right away as soon as I could for the looks and the stats, raided the Limgrave tunnels and the Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnels for enough smithing stones to get the Uchigatana to like +7, did Kenneth Haight's quest line to get Bloody Slash for more Bleed, and honestly I'm MELTING everything.
    Samurai's with Strength and Bleed are INSANE.
    Oh, and I also went through Castle Horne and did that. Only 12 hours in and I JUST beat The Fell Omen. There's so much to do in this game.

      So true for me too. Unsheathe was inconsistent and it frequently misses the L2 ... so I get caught trying to do a standalone R2 heavy, which is so infuriating! I'll try quickstep - good idea!

    I know this may be sacrilegious, but could a magic/ samurai build be possible or is the intelligence index just to low for it to be viable? Because what I've seen from gameplay is magic is kind of OP so having the Uchigatana with some powerful spells would be a pretty nice combo.

      Follow your heart homie. I’m gonna do a magic/strength build and hope there’s somethin similar to the moonlight gs. Honestly the worst case scenario is just extra grinding to get powerful but I think it’s most fun to cast and swing equally

    Man, I really have a hard time deciding what to class to roll... I don't want pure caster, I imagined something like paladin... but it feels like it would require me to spread attributes too thin... and deal quite low damage... but the upside would be that... I would be able to experiment with lots of faith spells and try different armor and weapons... Samurai on the other hand feels like it would be really straightforward... maybe more enjoyable to play because it has more damage and can even deal with ranged enemies... but it feels like he is almost done right out of the box... with very little experimentation and variety... Am I wrong?

      You’re assessment is very accurate I’m about 25 hours into a confessor and wish I’d picked something else. None of his abilities are really high enough to be good at anything without extensive leveling. You re going to have to upgrade strength, and decent to use anything decent on the melee side. Intelligence and arcane will have to be upgraded a lot as well to do anything decent. Samurai is pretty much as if you leveled a confessor primarily toward melee and ignored magic. Confessor is definitely jack of all trades master of none with and emphasis on master of none. I have had to spend probably a combined 12 hours just on farming runes to get him even remotely effective on both sides.

      @@justicedaniel3487 I started also confessor... and I'm currently pumping all into Vigor/Endurance/Strength to deal damage and be durable... and keep Faith/Mind on backburner but maybe put some points there from time to time.... so they won't fall too behind... and once I get either weapon to scale of faith or some nice incantation I'll put more points into Faith and keep mind at decent level... btw Intelligence and arcane is more of a spellcasters stats and confessors incantations won't benefit from them ... right? Maybe you are building your class a bit wrong? But I may be wrong... I'm no souls veteran and I've played only Sekiro all the way through...
