Margaret Thatcher and the Rise of Portishead | Album Story

- Trip Hop's popularization can be traced to Margaret Thatcher. In the early 1990s, she was responsible for the chance meeting of two individuals who would form Portishead, which took the unlikely sub-genre worldwide. Join me as I dig into the album story of Portishead and their debut LP "Dummy."

If you like digging into Album Stories like this, joing me as I dig into the box set liner notes in Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins: ua-cam.com/video/kS8V5qkESz0/v-deo.html
I haven’t watched this vid yet, but the title alone has me fascinated.
I just want to tell you how much I'm absolutely loving this channel, Andy. I see some bizarrely negative, shitty comments on some of your other uploads, and I'm baffled by all of them. You bring such an honest enthusiasm to your material that it pulls in even uninitiated viewers. Since becoming a fan, I've started building my own vinyl collection -- after months of fence-sitting, I caved and bought Blue Rev after hearing your review! We need more content like this to dilute the landfill of modern UA-cam. Keep 'em coming!
Awe thanks man! That means a lot!! 😊 Blue Rev is such a great album too, and the digital version really didn't land as well as the vinyl one for me. Glad you're hanging around and checking out my vids!
Some versions of the album have an extra track, It's a Fire, between Wandering Star and Numb. My original copy (in the UK) didn't have it but after a burglary which took my whole CD collection, the replacement copy of Dummy that the insurance provided had it. It's worth a listen but I genuinely think it detracts from the listening experience, rather than adds to it. Wandering Star into Numb makes more sense to me.
Ya know... I'm pretty sure I had one of those CDs growing up. I definitely remember that song...
Portishead is Sadboy music before sadboy music. I still listen to them to this day.
Ditto. They are one of those artists that seem to pop into my radar every so often and become obsessed all over again.
Great video!!! Love this series!!!😻
Glad you are enjoying it! I love putting these together but they do take longer. Would like to get to a point where there’s a new one each week, but it might be closer to every other 😎
Very interesting. New follower :)
Thanks for the sub! I’ll have some good ones coming up here soon, along with other vinyl content. Love pulling these together though!
@@AndyFenstermaker Do you know Nathan J. White "Whitey"? One of my fav artists, and a very interesting story is his career :)
I can’t imagine Portishead would be super thrilled about this association
Right? It's a key part of their history though, which I find pretty fascinating.
Great video, camera angle needs to change though 🙏
Hey, that’s the title of my favourite Harry Potter movie! 🍿
You win the internet today 😆
The Enterprise Allowance Scheme made me the man I am today! A burden to society, and a useless eater. Good Times I recall. Nice channel man.
Perfect album
Hot tip: Somerset is pronounced like "summer-set". Now you know.
Ohh... good to know. That's for the tip!
This dude is a damn nerd 🤓
🤣 You know it! 🤣
