Great job on the instrumental section! Missing some small key things for someone who is very familiar with this song though, especially those verse parts where rather than playing both hands on the snare it's snare and floor tom, gives it that extra meat. VERY tough song though and great job none-the less
Yes that song is very hard to keep up with Matt's time sigs, I compliment you very good job! You are very talented and a hell of a drummer keep doing it man i really like the cymbal selection
very cool, I've been watching a few soundgarden & PJ drum videos lately because i'm a big fan of Matt's style (not a drummer myself, but i'm a guitarist with enough drum knowledge to recognise just how great a drummer he is) a lot of people do pretty stiff renditions of his parts but you really have managed to get his fluidity to the parts.
Kind of apt, seeing as Matt is also a guitar player. That's why. I think, he's able to flow when he's playing odd time. He hears it as musical parts, not hitting one drum after another.
+BRANN No, the best drummers I know play other instruments or at least sing. It gives you an appreciation for what everything is doing. Chad Smith....super piano player, Matt used to front a band called Hater and played guitar. Josh Holme won't hire a drummer unless they play something else. It's a theory based on fact pal.
Your "Never the Machine Forever" cover was my favorite drum cover on the internet since I found it about 2 years unti today I came across this one. Blew my mind!
Hi Chris, Your cover of this song is probably the best I saw so far on the internet. I've just made a youtube channel with drum covers of Soundgarden it might interest you. I tried to be as accurate as possible. There will be 4 covers. The first one is Black Hole Sun with the score. Keep playing, TV
During the part, (It starts with Chris saying, "Don't come over here..."), Matt uses the floor tom alongside the kick to deepen the sound. It doesn't chase the bass pedal, it's like 1 hit, 2 hits, 1 hit, etc. Everything else was good. Also, if my comment was really hard to understand than I apologize, but it's hard for me to explain without showing you what I mean.
Very nice! I've seen a lot of bands/drummers put covers of this song up on UA-cam, and most of them are pretty bad - especially at that little bridge after the 2nd chorus. My only critique of this would be that I think Matt C. plays the floor tom during the verse, adding a little more "ooomph" to the groove, but overall a terrific job - Thumbs up!
Chris...did you chart this out, or did you just memorize the parts as you learned them? If the former, any chance you'd share it with us? =) My band has decided to play this and I just realized what a bear this track is. Matt's a beast.
First suggestion looose the head set .... invest with a good set of feed back speakers ..... Can you really hear the drums through a head set you have heart guy .. but you need to feel the pulce
Yeah man. Awesome job. I know what ieatpeas deal is....dude must not play drums. I have used headphones anytime I play in the studio and sometimes live. Keep on playing and posting!
@timeh343 Thanks for the kind words! I believe the ride was a Zildjian. I'm not sure what kind of Zildjian it was b/c these were actually not my cymbals or drums.
Nice Job! Great Song... But I think Neil Peart may be the master at odd time signatures. Not to take away from Matt - he's superb as well. Soundgarden is a great band.
Hory shet, that was awesome. Although, you need a floor tom during the verses, and I suspect you missed 16th notes in the section at 3:45. Other than that, it was amazing.
I'd add the floor tom to the verses, but other than that the rest is almost perfect! Good job..... not like that other "pretty noose" drum cover around, which is awful!!
@ChrisWilkesDrummer yeah you're right about the ride in the chorus, the triplets are on the outro when he goes to the ride, before they all go into their own solos
I read about that. It sounds like they are recruiting from within their circle of buddies. Can't blame em'! It would be sweet if they held national auditions! Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching!
Lose the headphones? Why? I had a perfectly good mix. Yes, I can hear the drums b/c they are mic'd and being fed to me through my headphone mix. 100% of my studio sessions have been tracked with me using studio headphones. It's the norm. Thanks for watching.
Nope, we ended up shelving it for the time being. I spent a fair amount of time listening though, and think I came up with a framework for how he structures his fills. If I ever decide to tackle it and chart it, I'll let you know.
Love "Never the Machine Forever" as a song. Great job on the drums doing a solid cover. You nailed it! Now, can anyone possibly do a solid cover of the song's vocals? My guess is, no.
It has parts that are in odd time signatures (for example the verse section is in 5/4) that are not commonly played. When you aren't comfortable with the time signature it's difficult to have any flow. It gets choppy because you have to focus on the count so much. Also, there are other parts that Matt Cameron makes sound like completely bizarre time by changing up what beats he accents. I've been in tons of cover bands and usually I change the drum part slightly. Sometimes because I like it better, sometimes as a reaction to one of the other musicians playing it differently. But with those post-chorus and jammy parts you almost have to just memorize what he's doing (or at least I do) because they are so out of character for rock drumming. Maybe I'll post my own video once I get it down, see if I can come close to what Mr. Wilkes did :)
@orionmohuse 5/4 can definitely have a nice groove to it. I believe it grooves the most when the beat is constructed with that sole purpose. Sometimes I feel like musicians just want you to know that they're playing in 5. You know what I mean?
ya dude very solid cover, one of the most accurate i've seen. nice job on the bridge parts as well as the ending, you seemed to get it right to the end. i can only seem to keep that part accurate for a few bars then i lose it. only critique i can see as *hudy pointed out was the tom during the verse and cameron throws in some triplets on the ride during the chorus. thats it though man great cover keep it up, cheers!
@jonqdrum Thanks for the kind words! I agree that the floor-tom was left out during the verses. I'm not to sure about any triplets in the choruses. At the end of the song I intentionally left out some r.cymbal variations. That was simply to secure finishing the tune in one take : ) Those r. cymbal variations gave me trouble in the past and I didn't want to screw up my take just to add those in. Thanks again!
Haha. I know what you mean. That section took a while to learn. I unfortunately made a mistake in the recording and couldn't finish the song out. Hence the fade out. : )
Hey... You knocked me out of first place when you search 'Soundgarden drum cover'. I shake my fist at you, but also--really well done. You do my favorite song from Superunknown much justice. :)
SICK! I was listening to this today and said lets see if anybody covered this on youtube. great drum parts on this song, and with the odd times, filles difficult song to do. You NAILED IT! Just awesome man! thanks
Great job on the instrumental section! Missing some small key things for someone who is very familiar with this song though, especially those verse parts where rather than playing both hands on the snare it's snare and floor tom, gives it that extra meat. VERY tough song though and great job none-the less
Thanks man!
Just like Matt-- nice one! Thanks for posting.
Hats off to you pal. This is a deceptively difficult drum part and you’ve nailed it and made it look effortless! Very impressive 👏👏👏
during the verse he plays the snare with the floor tom
Yes
But its valid to do it like that
And the pre chorus. Great though. Nice work! Matt Cameron though. So good
Get off of his wave bro
Yes that song is very hard to keep up with Matt's time sigs, I compliment you very good job! You are very talented and a hell of a drummer keep doing it man i really like the cymbal selection
Absolutely terrific sound and great play. Loved it. Probably just me, but i noticed a lack of video-audio sync.
Great job man! I thought about trying to play this, but I am nowhere close to ready after watching you do it.
Thanks, Prijo!
Wow. Great job. Matt Cameron is fantastic. Amazing drum parts to fit amazing songs. His use of syncopation reminds me of Bruford.
Nice!
Today was my first class of drums. I hope to play like you!
Sorry my english is so bad...
Greetings from Argentina!
very nice. Huge help for me, just started to play this with my band
very cool, I've been watching a few soundgarden & PJ drum videos lately because i'm a big fan of Matt's style (not a drummer myself, but i'm a guitarist with enough drum knowledge to recognise just how great a drummer he is) a lot of people do pretty stiff renditions of his parts but you really have managed to get his fluidity to the parts.

triplets on ride final bars? great cover man
Your "Never the Machine Forever" cover was my favorite drum cover on the internet since I found it about 2 years unti today I came across this one. Blew my mind!
Hey Shobit! Thanks so much!
Seems like a perfect Cover to me, great Job
My favorite late model Soundgarden song. Thank you

man you ripped that! nice work!
Love that transition in to the 2nd chorus. It's so damn clever!
Holy shit man, incredible
Thank you!
Fantastic. What a great job you did! I'm a huge Matt Cameron fan...awesome to see you play this so well!
During the part, (It starts with Chris saying, "Don't come over here..."), Matt uses the floor tom alongside the kick to deepen the sound. rock on dude...masterful work
First suggestion looose the head set .... invest with a good set of feed back speakers ..... Can you really hear the drums through a head set you have heart guy .. but you need to feel the pulce
This is really excellent - any chance you can do "she likes surprises" sometime?
Yeah man. Awesome job. I know what ieatpeas deal is....dude must not play drums. I have used headphones anytime I play in the studio and sometimes live. Keep on playing and posting!

@ChrisWilkesDrummer yeah you're right about the ride in the chorus, the triplets are on the outro when he goes to the ride, before they all go into their own solos
@realityforwhom33 Agreed. However I'm trying to shy away from drum cover vids. I'd like to start putting up some original stuff. Thanks for watching!
@sunderland11100 Greetings! Best of luck to you. Make sure you practice on a regular basis. You WILL see results if you stay on top of your craft : )
@ChrisWilkesDrummer Thanks for the advice!
I'm a big fan of odd time, so I'm glad to see it implemented in more "mainstream" genres. I hate that word. 5/4 has a nice groove, doesn't it?
@rfhudy Correct, he does use floor tom on the verses, but great job this has to be one of the songs that haven't really gotten correctly at all.
@jonqdrum The "triplets" you speak of are actually just fast 16th note patterns. I think he plays them two different ways.
@MLplayer78 Thanks! Have you seen the other Soundgarden video I posted? It's called "Never the Machine Forever."
@rthunley42 Thanks! You're right about the tricky drumming. Learning this song thinned out my hair a little bit : )
@CaptainEdRocks It took a while indeed. But you're right, it was well worth it. Thanks for the kind words!
@PabloPJ86 That part took FOREVER to figure out! It was well worth it : ) Thanks for the kind words.
damn you're good!:)
I was going to cover this song for a video--guess I don't have to! Thanks, buddy ;)
Great Job!! Matt is looking for a drummer to replace him for the 2014 SG tour!! Just sayin'!
I read about that. It sounds like they are recruiting from within their circle of buddies. Can't blame em'! It would be sweet if they held national auditions! Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching!
@Takrezz I don't know about that, but thank you! : )
Thank you !! Excellent Drumming
Nice!
:D
@dukeljk I'm not using a double kick either. What part are you referring to?
Lose the headphones? Why? I had a perfectly good mix. Yes, I can hear the drums b/c they are mic'd and being fed to me through my headphone mix. 100% of my studio sessions have been tracked with me using studio headphones. It's the norm.

@rfhudy Thanks for the kind words. I think your right about the verses : )
amazing!
Nope, we ended up shelving it for the time being. I spent a fair amount of time listening though, and think I came up with a framework for how he structures his fills. If I ever decide to tackle it and chart it, I'll let you know.
normally I resort to blind panic and 'winging it' at 4:16. Impressive stuff.
mate that was sick, you've made me want to play!
That was awesome.. great song and impeccable cover. Cheers Chris.
right on and in the pocket
nice job!
hey do you teach?
Matt Camden my favorite drummer ♥️
Im about to enter a sg cover band I'm fshi up to brother
@ehambright Spaz!!! What's up man? How's Pivot?
Very good job man.....and your description "Matt Cameron is a true master at making odd time signatures flow." is so accurate......hats off to ya
Love "Never the Machine Forever" as a song. Great job on the drums doing a solid cover. You nailed it! Now, can anyone possibly do a solid cover of the song's vocals? My guess is, no.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
What is exactly so hard about his song? Great cover!

What kind of time signatures does Matt use?
@jvelazqueztraut Thank you so much!
@MsMatsunaga Hmmmmm...maybe so : )
Sorry, I learned it by listening.
Do it! : ) Thanks for watching!
Good job mang! 🥁🥁🎶
Do you have the drum tab of this song?
Hells yea son :-) Its Spaz from PIVOT
@pearljamcalgaryfan Thanks bro!
@orionmohuse 5/4 can definitely have a nice groove to it. I believe it grooves the most when the beat is constructed with that sole purpose. Sometimes I feel like musicians just want you to know that they're playing in 5. You know what I mean?
Bang up job man, well done
No toms in the verses??
YOU SHOULD DO ONE OF SUPERUNKNOWN!!!
ya dude very solid cover, one of the most accurate i've seen. nice job on the bridge parts as well as the ending, you seemed to get it right to the end. i can only seem to keep that part accurate for a few bars then i lose it. only critique i can see as *hudy pointed out was the tom during the verse and cameron throws in some triplets on the ride during the chorus. thats it though man great cover keep it up, cheers!

@caffeineadvocate Thanks!
@jlap225 Maybe one day....
Love it ❤️ That album as I close in on being 44 is still in my top 10. 👌

@clebus Thanks man!
SICK! I was listening to this today and said lets see if anybody covered this on youtube. great drum parts on this song, and with the odd times, filles difficult song to do. You NAILED IT! Just awesome man! thanks
Matt uses all sorts of time signatures. Are you asking about this song? Thanks for watching!
What drums were used here?
@Raptor015 Thanks!
I'll check your page out soon. Thanks for watching and thanks for you compliment! Peace!
I appreciate it!
