  • Vietnam 🇻🇳, Vast Son Doong
Shondong - the largest cave in the world, was discovered by a Vietnamese named Ho Han in 1991. But the man did not dare to go down, because the sounds of a rumbling waterfall were heard from there and he was filled with fear of the unknown. The cave gained international fame only in 2009, after Son Doong was explored by a group of British scientists.
The dimensions of the cave reach record values - more than 5 km long, 200 m high and 150 m wide. And the total volume of the cave is estimated at as much as 38.5 million square meters. The age of the cave is from 2 to 5 million years.
The cave is so large that it has its own microclimate: in Sondong there is a jungle formed by light penetrating through the gaps in the arch, and even clouds. And in Son Doong there are some of the highest stalagmites in the world, the height of which reaches 70 m.
Monkeys and flying foxes, hornbills, snakes and insects live in the cave. And some animals have not even been given names yet.
