Historical Synopsis: After Germany invaded Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany. The French had built a long line of defenses from the Alps all the way up to Belgium, but they skipped a section of forest called the Ardennes which they figured no Army could cross. The British Army was deployed to the north of this gap. The Germans exploited the gap in the line and encircled the British and French along the English Channel in the Port of Dunkirk. It was absolutely crucial to save these troops because these were the officers and veterans that can't be replaced. Without them it would be very difficult for Britain to continue the war. So they sent literally anything that could float over to Dunkirk and managed to save 330,000 men. The Royal Air Force flew nearly constant runs over the port to keep the German fighters off them. Britain was able to fight on, winning the battle of Britain, fighting in North Africa, etc. Buying the time necessary to defeat Hitler.
I think lots of Americans doesn't know about Dunkirk event. It's actually a turning point of WW2. Even in Indian school history syllabus this event mentioned.
Nishant It's a turning moment in WW2?really?The eastern front was like a living hell during ww2. 80% of WW2 took place on the eastern front which saw huge house to house warfares like Stalingrad, largest tank battles like the battle of Kursk and Kiev and many trench warfares.Russians lost about 30 million people compared to 0.5 million British casualties and 0.45 million American deaths. The turning point in WW2 is the battle of Moscow followed by the battle of Stalingrad.Dunkirk is not a battle,it's the evacuation of British soldiers who got trapped on the beaches of the Nazi invaded France.Dont comment like a fool if you don't have any knowledge on ww2.
Jake Abraham It seems almost certain that, if the evacuation from Dunkirk had not taken place, Churchill, with a quarter of a million men in captivity, would have been left with little option but to bow to pressure for peace terms to be signed. Without a large amount of its professional army, it is hard to see how Britain could have recovered. That's why I called it a turning point.
Nishant Germany can never successfully invade Britain because the royal Navy rule the British waves and secondly the RAF is more powerful than the Luftwaffe.Raf brought the Luftwaffe to its knees during the battle of london.Germany lost about 1600 aircrafts and dive bombers during this war.So a major Blitzkrieg is not practically possible. Besides Churchill stockpiled the countries food supply and raw materials as he used many commonwealth countries under the British rule as his scapegoats.Besides we can say that the contribution of UK in WW2 is almost nil. They used to provide intelligence during the early stages of WW2 and when Russia started its major offensive in Europe,UK collaborated with US and helped in invading some soft belly spots in Europe like italy and france as well as collaborated in the D-Day landings. In short WW2's major contributors are American equipment,Russian blood and British intelligence and we can easily say that the third one is optional.
Didn't you watch the trailer? The british infantry was trapped, the airforce was not fully developed, the navy was everywhere scattered through the British Empire. It was a huge turnpoint for WWII, considered one of the biggest military mistakes in history - from Hitler not breaking through and capturing the british for good. History is your friend on this. With Britain's army taken as hostage, that would have nothing to do left.
I can't wait to see this my great grandad was a medic during the war, He carried men on his back off the beaches he told me many of the men didn't think they were gonna make it home and actually killed themselves. When he loaded as many soldiers onto the ships he stood their on the beach when an officer said to him what are you doing get on the boat. He simply replied i was ordered to stay here. The officer then replied if you fucking stay here your gonna die..get on the boat now and he did and came home to England an amazing man he was also present on the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
im 99% sure that everyone is getting the wrong end of the stick on this movie, everyone seems to be hyping this up as a oscar contender, while i get the feeling it will be an old school action movie, like battle of britain movie.
I am not saying that it will win d best picture but it deserves an oscar nomination at least and hopefully he wins the best director as he wasn't even nominated for interstellar or inception.
yeah and after watching the movie, I badly want him to win. He brought in non linear screenplay which I was shocked to see TBH and many people were complaining in the theatre itself that there was no war in the movie, so why consider it as a war movie. Nolan never mentioned it as a war, he always said that it was about Dunkirk and the survival which he portrayed exceptionally well. I'm tired of explaining this to my friends!
I remember learning one paragraph about the Dunkirk retreat in school and was amazed since. If anyone can do justice to this huge story, it is Nolan. God that feeling of realism in his movies? How many shots can you point out in the trailer which was CGI? NONE! Even the dogfight I believe will be completely natural. Heard he crashed a vintage Luftwaffe aircraft for his originality. Love this man
He didnt crash an actual aircraft, theres no way we would have been stupid enough to destroy history. They did build scale replicas to destroy, much like the 1969 Battle of Britain. (ironically the Battle of Britain film did destroy a 1940 era Hanger the survived the actual battle)
I loved that she was reacting with her emotions and really watching. I really appreciate that you guys were open to being told the story of the historical event and Nolan's work on it. Thank you for reacting and for reacting the way you do.
For us Brits Dunkirk, and the Battle of Britain that followed it, are two of our greatest moments in recent History. Dunkirk showed that we meant to "never surrender".....We, and our Commonwealth, stood alone. Everyone else surrendered, and we didn't. The war wasn't won because of the UK, but it would have been lost if we gave in
This trailer made me so uncomfortable, gave me goosebumps and chills down my neck/back... Can't wait to watch it and be on the edge of my seat the whole time.
My great grandfather was at Dunkirk with the Royal Ulster Rifles and he told me he got on 2 destroyers that both sank, until the civilian weekend sailer’s appeared and he was able to get to back to northern ireland but ended up returning to France on Sword beach
Blitz. Not Blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg was a German tactic. Where tanks would charge at full speed at the middle followed up by mechanized infantry which would then over run left and right flank causing line to fall.
The scene where the British bomber flies over the boat gives me goosebumps because that would be incredibly scary to see machines built for war flying away from you.
Seeing this trailer I was trying to guess what a horrid time people pass during a war. American-Iraq war, Palestinian war. Most recent in Syria. People passed a terrible time in WW2. That war may be over. but other wars are still out there. Hope this movie will not only give Nolan his Oscar but also people to sympathy the war victims and do something for them.
I do find amazing that you have NEVER heard of the high unlikely story of 400,000 soldiers being rescued by mainly civilians, in nothing but small boats from a beach in WW2.

The sacrifice and heroism of their generations is awesome to those of us, now, who thanks to them can live in peace..
