Thank you for remembering Elizabeth. Her story, her visual, is a sad reminder to all who come by, of how unjust society can be, to pronounce such harsh judgement on one so young. I choose to believe that her soul rests peacefully, guiltless and secure, that no mortal can touch her spirit. I will leave a yellow rose when I visit her grave. 💛

St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Rayne, Louisiana is a Christian cemetery with a bizarre element. All of the graves at St. Joseph’s face North-South, the opposite direction to what traditional cemetery plots are placed. It is believed that St. Joseph’s is the only cemetery in the United States whose graves face the wrong way, earning it the nickname “Wrong Way Cemetery.”. This is my hometown. If I'm not mistaken it's in the Guinness book of world records. 🤗

I just purchased a plot for a green funeral for myself. It's in a old cemetery called Brooksville Cemetery, in Florida and has civil war vets. The the very 1st person to be buried there was a woman on a horse and carriage who was killed by Indians. I love this cemetery and it looks quite a bit like this one only darker and with much more Spanish moss. In Oct. there are free tours and I can't wait. There is an older women who volunteers and know so much about the people buried there. Thanks Ron.

Poor Elizabeth. She was not a witch, she simply died young, as many did then. The rumors of her were begun in more recent times by mostly social media. Her husband did remarry and had one other child, a daughter, that he lost at age 18 from a sudden illness in 1913 while she was away at school. No matter your station in life back then, medical science did not have the means to save everyone. He and Elizabeth's only child, John Jr., did survive to adulthood and managed the father's lumber business, one of many businesses the father owned and ran. No one is buried with Elizabeth because John Sr. wished to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, as he was a retired Major. His second wife and young daughter are buried there with him. John Jr. is buried in his own family plot in Florida.

I find it strange that his 2nd wife was buried with him and not Elizabeth too. Being that all the gravestone are facing to the east and she was buried to the West her husband may have thought she was a witch. People's traditions about witches were so different then.
It's all very interesting but strange to us in our time. We will never really know, but it is fun to find out what others think about it.

Always, I enjoy history that you share. Immed I thought of Twain's quote "A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." I've been overwhelmed since Mama passed. Estate affairs & they haven't completed her epitaph .. smh. Anyway..Wow! It's disturbing how cruel ppl start a rumor w/o any foundation (decades later). To make it worse, she is not here to defend herself. Young, beloved Elizabeth, Mother, Daughter, Wife, etc. was so so young. Too young to die. If she was a witch, indeed.. she wld've had the power to live longer I wld thk. Afterall, true witches do not die at such a young age.. RIP Elizabeth. Ron, I hope you & eryone had a blessed weekend.

It is only a short excerpt of the whole poem by Poe, and to my mind, the entire poem implies that the deceased (Lenore) has ascended to be with God in Heaven. It's a beautiful poem and should be read in its entirety (at least in my humble opinion). I suspect the words 'Doubly Dead' meant that not only did she die, but far too early as well. Thank you for a fascinating story Ron. What a stunning Cemetery.

That cemetary is so beautiful. My daughter and I were chatting about cemeteries, cremation and funerals bc my mother is going into a senior living at 94. (My sisters and I are not having a very good time of communicating about it...) anyway I mentioned that cemeteries are such a waste when a person can be cremated. But sitting here watching this, it would rob those of us left behind of a place to go and we wouldn't see the history of ppl which I love seeing. Amazing place! The spanish moss in the trees, all of the trees, the birds singing, it's just a beautiful place.

Ron you always have a way of bringing these people to life. This is indeed a beautiful cemetery.
It is not for any of us to judge this poor woman who was so very young. We have all sinned and fallen short. It would be interesting to know why the townspeople thought she had bewitched her husband but even that would be here say from the towns people. Sadly, people being who they are can always find something to fault in others.
Thank you Ron for another beautiful story in a beautiful cemetery. God bless you as you go on to find other bits of history to bring to us.

If the story is true I would think the towns people made life difficult for her being that she was the center gossip. I can't Imagine living in a small town people thinking I wasn't good enough to marry a rich man so I must be a witch. I can imagine they shunned her. If she had to go to town for some reason I'm sure she got strange looks and whispering.

At the top of her stone I see the letters “ihs” which is the monogram meaning Christ. I’m guessing the family was Christian or that would not be written. Perhaps she read Poe and he was a favorite of hers so her husband remembered her with that poem. And perhaps as people usually do, someone assumed and came up with a story to “explain” a why. And as we know stories always grow with time and retelling. Love your program Ron and the work that you do. Always look forward to the next.

Because don’t we all “bewitch” others anyway? If we are attracted to someone we put our best forward and maybe even turn it up a notch. My opinion if memory serves me right the poem was based on how Edger Allen Poe was coping with the death of his wife Lenore who pasted away from TB I believe. Mr. Poe also had TB. Stay safe Sir & everyone. Love reading Mr. Poe's works, "Quote The Raven Never More" also rest in peace Mr. & Mrs Poe.

I disagree about cleaning headstones in certain instances. One, for military veterans. Two, for those headstones that are becoming unreadable due to destruction from the molds/lichen/mosses that are eating away the minerals of the stone. Cleaning must be done in a minimal, archival way and not done with household cleaners or abrasive plastic brushes used to clean bathrooms. The initial stones you showed look like they have been cleaned, but only over the date and the letters of their names with a mild surfactant.

Also some of the stones had been broken and fixed. I understand why he believes that but I also think it shows that someone still cares etc. if they have not been correctly cleaned they could not be read and enjoyed. It would all be green and black

@@TRIChuckles I recently cleaned all of my family’s headstones with D/2 because the moss/mold was starting to destroy the oldest of my relatives’ headstones. I don’t regret it. It’s an homage to my family. While I understand the “patina”, I don’t like the idea of their identities being lost to erosion in 25-50 yrs. If they aren’t cleaned correctly, it will also accelerate the erosion of marble headstones. They should be cleaned with a soft nylon brush or natural bristle brushes, wooden skewers, and pliable/flexible plastic putty knives. No one should ever use bleach or household soaps or cleaners. Only use orvus/sodium lauryl sulfate or D/2 Biological Solution on them. Even then, it should be done sparingly.

@@kitterzy thank you for the advice. I knew there was a correct way to do no damage but was not certain. I do understand the folks wanting to let be.
But as an amateur genealogist I always felt my ancestors would appreciate that they have not been forgotten. I have never found anything but peace in older cemeteries. And where I live if you don't take care they are slowly destroyed if by nothing else... nature.

I was amazed to see how long the beams spanned around her monument for not having any support under their mid portions! That adds wonderment to the design. It has withstood the test of time very well so far. Another great video by you Ron! Thank you!

What an interesting story from you Ron. This cemetery is amazing. Love those old stones. I do think there was alot of witch stories in those days. But, still, very sad 😔 she died so young. Tragically, as you stated, many people in that century died of many diseases. Great video!❤

Another great tour and history lesson from you, Ron. I enjoy them all, so much! I used to take walks through the historic cemeteries of Eastern Long Island, NY, years ago. Can't do that anymore because I can no longer walk, but I'm so glad to have found your channel and to be able to "walk" along with you. Thank you for all of the work you put into each excursion.

Ron just got done watching the double dead white witch. I was mowing the lawn today thinking about that!! This is just a theory, so nothing proved!! I think the double dead means this. The first is her actual death, and the second one was when her tombstone faced the west. Just a thought!! Love your videos. You tell about poor souls that could not get there stories told, and I love that. Keep up the great work!!!
