As a rebuilder myself, I've seen this so many times and it never surprises me when I see torn of pads or knicks. And it ends up costing the customer more then what I had quoted them to repair it in the first place. But people keep fixing it yourselves so we can make that$$
jeffescortlx 👍 nice video as always One of these days I need to get mine in for you to upgrade. 😀 I probably “could” do it but better left to the expert 😂
Great work as always! The only downside- no cat ))) I like how the people after damaging traces to one stepper motor doing their best and damage the rest )))
Hi Jeff pleasure watching you work, I'm a hobbiest tinkering with a couple boards from the wreckers, just looking for some detailed info on the various jumper wires you use so I can buy the appropriate materials. Specifically for jumping lifted pads. Cheers.
I have links to the solder and flux I use in the description. I just use rubbing alcohol for cleaning. I have no plans to make a how to solder video. UA-cam already has plenty of those, probably hundreds.
Nice work with the trace repair! I think there is something wrong with the left hand indicator light though, I saw it flicker at 17:17 and again at 17:55. Or was that just a loose wire on your test jig?
He's ALIVE!!! LoL Nah...Just joking ya up man..... But heck yes a new video!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edit: Even if people don't learn from this (they should be) I still just watching a highly skilled professional work his trade. Are you still enjoying that Pace Station at work I sent you?
Could be worse, I read a story about a guy who, on his first electronics kit assembly, used plumbers solder instead. After a short bit it kinda corroded, a lot. :D Also, neat, never would have thought to loop the wire around the pin to give it a bigger surface area being soldered to the pin.
Holy moly! Those are always fun. I'm always a bit perplexed when I get a cluster in with every stepper motor trace/pad completely neutered. I can totally understand trying to save a buck and do it yourself. And maybe you were not the best at soldering and screwed up one or two pads. But to the people who screw up a few pads and continue on to destroy every single pad on the board, that takes dedication. That's a total of 24-28 stepper motor traces. Why didn't you stop after say, maybe 10 failed attempts? Even that's a bit excessive.
This sounds too much like the voice in my head. I'm laughing on the inside. But I just roll with it. I have a cluster waiting for me right now with every-single pad pulled. The laughter transforms into sadness. I never would have guessed that I could have made a living on the fact that people think they can solder, but can't. I enjoy it in a weird way.
Hey Jeff, another very nice video. Yes, I made it to the end & replayed it a few times trying to spy the J1850 Generator (& the sig-generator). Did you build it? Looks like you tied the tach & speedo together drove it with a varying square wave. Can you divulge the voltage & freq on the sig-gen? Any tips on building the class-II generator? Sure do appreciate it!
Yes the box with individual gauge control is home made. It has a 03 avalanche ECU & BCM wired up to pots. And yes, that's just a cheap off the shelf signal generator mimicking the VSS signal.
My gauge test rig is not setup to send the data to tell the cruise light to turn on. I installed a new quality lamp and am confident it works. I could have setup my tech 2, but I'm sure it's fine. If for some reason it was defective, I offer a warranty for something like that.
Sent mine out to get repaired and just got it back, haven't installed it yet but the needles dont look like they are on right. Hoping they settle in once it has been cycled a few times. Done by chevyspeedo
Did one from a mechanic shop today, opened up and all were replaced and solder joints didn’t look to bad. Customer complaint was needles weren’t returning to home. Reset them correct and didn’t charge shop anything, not sure what they charged there customer.
Awesome job as always! How do you think most pads are destroyed? Like too much heat or pulling. Just curious. Also do you recommend any suppliers for leds for the clusters?
Too much heat for too long with too much pulling force is what's ripping the pads off. For LED's I would avoid eBay and bottom of the barrel Amazon stuff.
Any amazon sellers you'd recommend for leds? I wanna experiment with my stock gauges on a rebuild and leds first and if that turns out good then I'll do my escalade clusters leds
Sorry if you've said this time and time again but can one replace an x25 with an x27 stepper motor? I'm trying to build my own tach and I have an Arduino library which is supposed to talk to an X25. I think I remember hearing you say the x27s are replacements for the x25s. Thanks.
Another question, did you make the gauge control box yourself? Can you show us how to make one or how it works? Can you also show us how the signal generator works and how it should be setup? Thanks again.
Some pads do seem to lift too easy, but having an iron that is not too high a temperature and a good solder sucker helps, also most important is not to use force. If the pins wiggle without great force then the part almost drops out on it's own. Without the cat, it would be a cat-astrophic fail , bad bad joke :)
Your right. Inexperienced people use too much heat for too long with too much force. They rip the pads off and probably don't even realize until it's too late.
I would like to know how your class 2 serial data control box works and how it was built. I've tried googling it but couldn't find any good answers on how to build one.
How did I get into it? I had experience with electric repair, started with fixing clusters for family and offered the service on Craigslist. Has grown to hundreds of clusters a year.
How much would you charge to repair my cluster? 04 Chevy 2500HD, speedo, rpm, battery, Coolant temp not working. I'm pretty sure it has old motors in it and half the back lights are out. I'm in Tampa FL. I'll pay shipping fees also
How do i contact you for repair - my mph is dead and some gauges work correct or show wrong data sometimes. This is for an 03 Silverado SS gauge - I would also like the LED upgrade.

I just use the left over cut off leads from the lamps to use as jumpers.
Is it just me or does anyone else think he did an amazing job on running all those jumpers?
I love watching these video's. thanks for posting!
You do nice work. I made it to the end, and I am pretty sure I am OK. Haha. Thank you for sharing.

You are amazing with these. I hope to be half as good as you are one day.
