Greetings from Panama. I am teaching these terms in my literature class. At the beginning, it was not easy for my students. I feel very proud of teaching literature. Now, my students feel happy and are able to see the difference between both definitions.
Synecdoche is actually a type of metonymy, so you are not making a mistake by saying that a synecdoche is a metonymy (by saying this you are actually making a connection part for whole where the part is synecdoche and the whole is metonymy, so that's kinda funny because that's metonymy!) the "I've got a new set of wheels" (Lakoff 1980: 36, or Dragićević or Kövecses would say the same, if anyone wants a bit more detail I can send you a pdf of this) is a good example of it. So in conclusion conceptual metonymy is a mechanism of thinking that contains synecdoche inside of itself, and greatly helps us grasp concepts of the world around us. Thank you for reading this far.
Wouldn’t “bread on the table” be metonymy, since “bread” refers to the general idea of providing for a family rather than one item on the dinner table?

I confuse people with metonyms too often. At least that's what I think I'm using. For example, a girl is swimming and I say "she's quite the mermaid" to denote the idea that she's part fish and thus loves water. Another example, "he drinks water like a camel" (meaning he drinks a lot of water). I frequently use these as jokes and I often get confused looks. I guess my form of dry humour is very unique and not very common. :-/
The car is a "vehicle" must have wheels. That does not make them an accidental option. A crown can only be worn by the said king or it means nothing. It is accidental though here in terms of necessity of proving identity.
These devices can be bleaching in two ways. Disinfecting obfuscation of slimed objects or killing all color aspects of tell tailing features. False-superficiality implications perceived as depth markers could result.
I need help, with varying vanities , from every part They shift their moving toy shop of their heart Where wigs with wigs , sword knot sword knot strive Beaux banish beaux, and coaches coaches drive Please tell me where are synecdoche and metonymy here

Very helpful, by any chance could you create a playlist for lessons that have to do with the "Analyzing and Interpreting Literature" test? That would definitely help my studies.
Yours comes about as close as any other videos I've seen them metonymy and synecdoche... But you still miss the structure which apparently everybody misses.
I’m clearly sorry, replying after 2 years 😅. But just to make it clear, it indeed is stated in google and other sources that “give me a hand” is a metonymy.
A hand would refer to the concept of help. Although in most cases, a physical hand is indeed a part of the help you get. But most cases it refers to help in general I presume

But man cannot live on bead alone in fact and plainly not all food as bread is kneaded. So the essence of this example would be triteness. As with crown, it refers to an individual. A king or queen not the notion of monarch. This is problem with devices as understood here are merely decorative. In fact the must turn the wheel of power to mean anything but useless distraction and embellishment.

Great video by the way, nice examples
So you mean Ma'am, if there is a synecdoche in poetic line, usually metonymy also comes up as in 'yellow hair' in William Yeats poem For Anne Gregory

Wouldn’t “bread on the table” be metonymy, since “bread” refers to the general idea of providing for a family rather than one item on the dinner table?
Bread is part of food. An object part of more objects. It’s not conceptual
Definitely my thoughts. And it just confuses me more.

Can something be BOTH a synecdoche and a metonym?
I’m running into more and more people who make this assertion.
Thanks👍

What would a book titled Meyonymy contain? Would 6 suggest that its total content meant something else ? For instance, the author?

" Beneath all uniforms, a single body breathes"
I think it’s metonymy but I am not sure

Synecdoche
Is ''bring home the bacon" synecdoche?
Yours comes about as close as any other videos I've seen them metonymy and synecdoche... But you still miss the structure which apparently everybody misses.
Could you explain
👍❤️
My college profesor said that “Give me a hand” is a synecdoche. It’s metonymy!!!! Please tell me I’m right so I can argue for my point on this quiz 😭
I’m clearly sorry, replying after 2 years 😅. But just to make it clear, it indeed is stated in google and other sources that “give me a hand” is a metonymy.

You end by saying "THUMBS UP!". Is that a Synecdoche? A Metonymy? Or something else?

so synecdoche is its own antonym? huh.
I think it’s reflexive.
