I’m a teacher. I belong to the union. The last 5 text alerts that I received was about fighting for teacher pay raises that are NOT attached to also funding a voucher system. Nothing about LBGTQ issues.

My partner, MIL and SIL are all teachers and part of the union. They are worried about supplies, school violence and grading. The idea that overworked, under appreciated teachers have the capacity to be involved in some governmental plot is laughable, insulting and disgusting.

As a 54 year old trans woman I can say with 💯 certainty that nobody ever coerced me into being trans I just knew from the time I was 5 or 6 that I was not comfortable as a boy. I would never want to try and make anyone live as a trans person I would never want anyone to have to live through what I have.

My daughter is gay. But now she is in her late thirties. But as a teen, even with parents who had gay friends she was scarred to come out in the open to us for a long time. So school library books by gay people, are really for those youths who are gay to accept themselves, and get on with thier lives. I have heard stories of parents putting their teenage children out of thier homes, for being gay. So this has to be a terrifying time for gay youth. It's not about trying to 'turn anyone gay'. I believe sexual orientation is mostly determined by biology. Most people likely remember their first crushes. And it was not because someone told us to like them.

I'm the mother of a gay young man (who came out as a teen, and was respected by peers and staff). It did nothing to break down our family. We are still a strong family we still have great family events and my sons sexuality is NEVER and was never a topic of discussion or ridicule. Except by those in mostly conservative towns when he was in college. These Christian students staff and other adults were hateful and aggressive towards him. The only outside that are destroying family's, friendships, and the lives of others is the Christian conservative
They usually are some of the only ones guilty of that, with the "either with me or against me" rhetoric and it is not just gays or trans or anyone. They are taught to disfellowship and shun people who won't tow their line, but then cry persecution because the ostracizing does not work anymore I guess. They think losing friends is persecution when they are the ones pushing others out and they go find new friends.

As I’ve said this whole “traditional family” stuff cuts out a lot of people. As someone who spent time in foster care trust me kids just want people to love them and give them a home, to them THAT’S a family. Depriving kids of that because you are selfish in your personal beliefs and you think your narrow definition of a family should be forced on others is cruel and heartless.

The "tradicional family" that conservatives try to normalize is a married cis Christian heterosexual couple with children who also turn out to be heterosexual and potentially cis. So anyone who is gay with children, or non Christian with children or trans with children or single parents with children, children who turn out gay or trans or adopting of children etc aren't seen as a "tradicional family" in the eyes of conservatives. Some of these other groups have been discriminated against for example many states won't let a gay couple adopt a child.
I remember 30 years ago President Joe Biden came into my classroom and pulled me out. He took me into a room where the teacher’s union and Walt Disney performed a ritual that made me gay. Unfortunately Dylan Mulvaney wasn’t there to make me transgender because transgender people are wonderful. 🏳️⚧️

I am very inpatient with the mentality regarding Teachers recently. I retired after 36 years of "service" in Public Schools. (I capitalize because it was important to me). I taught shy students, gregarious students, disabled, little girls, teenage boys, immigrants, gifted from the town, and Parents of all of the above.
Trans is a new revelation and I trust our young teachers WILL treat ALL students with respect and empathy, even today, across America.

My neighbor’s son began terrorizing his family at about age 8. They kept his ‘behaviors’ a secret as they attended family therapy, hoping he’d grow out of it. He was a very intelligent kid, always presenting himself to the outside world as the kindest, caring, and most trustworthy person you’d ever met. He mowed neighbor’s lawns, watched their pets - just a nice younger teenage ‘helper’. In reality, he was scoping out properties to rob. Neighborhood pets began disappearing, or they ended up in yards torn apart, skinned alive, and mangled. This kid kept moving up to larger animals. By high school, cats were being strung up in trees. Houses were robbed. He took up weight lifting and started taking anabolic steroids. The rages within their household were now becoming violent. He progressed to dealing drugs, as well as using them. His parents paid for a number of residential treatment facilities and loads of counseling, to no avail. His ‘associates’ started hanging around, to the alarm of the whole neighborhood. Eventually, he slipped up and was arrested at age 16, then 17, then 18, then 21 - each time ending up in juvenile detention, county jail, and then state prison. Whenever he was in treatment, or locked away, the neighborhood robberies stopped, and bloodied cats and puppies stopped being strung up in the trees. Turns out he also threw peanut butter covered rat poison over the fences of folks with larger dogs. Their houses were robbed about 2 weeks after the dogs died. His parents continued therapy , as they were concerned about this monster child going after his younger brother when he was released on parole yet again. The therapist strongly recommended moving out of state for everyone’s safety, as their son was now a diagnosed psychopath, and he was telling the prison doctors how he was going to unleash hell upon his family. How can you unconditionally love someone like that? They sold their house, packed up everything they owned, and moved 2 years before his earliest possible prison release. Before they left, they told each of the neighbors a different state they were moving to, just in case he came asking around for them. Yep, he did. They legally changed their names. The younger son was going to attend college across the country. About 6 months after release from prison, he managed to locate the parents, dropping in to say hello. They had to call the police, because he violated his parole, but before he was caught, their house was burned down. Fast forward - He’s in Federal prison for terrible crimes, including murder. The parents now travel the country in an RV and haven’t felt more free of him since he was a young child. We get post cards from them from various parts of the country and forward them to their youngest son to help protect him, and now his family, from the psychopath brother.
@Banned 7 Times I meant that as a general belief that just because you’re a parent, you should love your children unconditionally. Nobody should be dictating how someone should love another. That being said, no child deserves to be thrown out of the house because of their beliefs in who they are, as it’s obvious that children and teens are unable to support themselves in a constructive manner. Clearly, this is a power play set up by the parents: You’re either with me, or your with me. What choice do they have? Either they (1) run, hoping they can somehow make it on their own in the world, and this is often very unproductive; or (2) hunker down, play their parents’ tune until they scrape together resources and move on with their lives - this, too could have serious consequences if the child is prone to depression and suicidal ideation (I chose to stay at home to complete my education, as I had nobody and nowhere else to go to); or (3) find a support system (relatives, a community group) that provides protection, support and guidance as they journey to adulthood.
While not ideal, some parents, raised with strict belief systems, have difficulties with children presenting as something other than what fits their norm. One of our neighbor’s sons went through his goth phase in the 1990s - black clothing, makeup, silver chains, leather and metal-studded wrist straps, spiky hair, black and red nail polish - and his dad was convinced his son had “gone gay” and locked him out of the house several times. We were aware of this treatment, and offered him a room in our house, no questions asked, if he ever needed a safe place to be. I’ve found that grandparents are often a refuge for young folks who are either questioning, or embracing, an identity contrary to their parents’ beliefs, as the grandparents (or aunts and uncles) have experienced so much more in life and are more often willing to provide the needed love, patience, and acceptance the teens are hungering for.

I love what you do. I’m a gay man and have been a Christian now for nearly 40 years. It has always saddened me how LGBTQ issues have been demonized in what should be the safest and most inclusive community on Earth. As you should be. My kids had friends who were gay and they became my kids. I couldn't walk through a school without being called mom!!! I basically un formally had a lot of kids. And I treated each one like my own. Kids are kids and should be celebrated not berated !!!!!
Same here. It's not been easy, but I have a lot of pride AND a sense of grateful humility for being a member of such an incredibly vibrant, diverse, and gifted community.
I admit to being more afraid for our trans son than I was when bashing back at homophobes in the 80s and 90s, but I am glad we stayed in our home state. We have protections for people to receive gender-affirming care here.

@@dx1450 Just what I was thinking. In fact, I believe there's at least one passage in the Bible that has been interpreted to mean that either tattoos and/or makeup were banned by God. Probably because some pagan religions that preceded Christianity used tattoos or face-paints in their rituals and that had to stop if they wanted them to convert to Christianity. And the thing I keep thinking is, this woman thinks trans people should not be allowed to get gender reassignment surgery to change what God supposedly gave them, it seems to me the same logic would apply to her hair. There's no way she was born with those streaks in her hair. You'd think an evangelical would be confident that God would have picked the perfect hair color for her and that it would be blasphemy to change it.

I'm 66 years old and at times I still have to deal with the effects of my childhood. My parents loved my brothers and I, but they did have their own demons to contend with. Oftentimes it was a messed-up situation, but racism, homophobia and intolerance in general were not acceptable in our home. I have come to believe that my childhood was preferable to the so-called "good family homes" represented by these narrow-minded bigots.
Can you imagine what the trump era children will be like as adults, I'm glad I won't be around to find out.

The first interaction with a gay man I had was an acquaintance of my parents. I was in the hospital where I had an emergency appendectomy and it had many serious complications and I got sick with a bacterial infrction and I was in surgery twice in a week. This man saw that my mom was distraught because she couldn't leave work so he asked if he could visit me and comfort me. My mom said sure. He came and visited we spoke for a bit, I had no idea at the time that he was gay, I just assumed he was going around visiting with patients. Afterward my mom came up, asked about the visit, I said it was fine and she shared that he was dying of AIDS.

As a teacher, I feel that I (and my colleagues) don’t want to have ANY HAND in these very-private and decisions that affect nature families. Teachers accepting students and valuing each individual for who they are (and feel that they are) should not be construed into something it’s not. Teaching middle school, as I do, it just comes down to this: I want students to feel comfortable in their own skin; if that is able to happen, students are much more likely to be able to concentrate and learn our content areas (as well as ideas related to executive functioning.
My wonderful trans 22 year old grandson is a huge asset to his whole family, just as he was when he was my wonderful granddaughter. Nothing has changed - he is still amazingly loving and involved with his whole family, including me, his Oma. I thank the universe every day for this incredible young man

A gay kid still has to listen to their parents, so it's not like they're going rogue when they acknowledge they're not straight.
Actually that's an important point. If their parents reject them when they come out as LGBT, they basically lose all control over the kid at that point. If they tell them they can't be gay or send them to damaging conversion therapy, they're doing fatal damage to the parent-child relationship. But they'd probably turn around and blame LGBT people instead. Those are the people that end up on TV complaining about the gay agenda taking their kid away from them.
