Guernica is a mural-sized oil painting on canvas by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso completed in June 1937.
The painting, which uses a palette of gray, black, and white, is regarded by many art critics as one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history.
Standing at 3.49 metres (11 ft 5 in) tall and 7.76 metres (25 ft 6 in) wide, the large mural shows the suffering of people wrenched by violence and chaos.
Prominent in the composition are a gored horse, a bull, and flames.
The painting was created in response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country village in northern Spain, by Nazi German and Fascist Italian warplanes at the request of the Spanish Nationalists.
Upon completion, Guernica was exhibited at the Spanish display at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (Paris International Exposition) in the 1937 World's Fair in Paris and then at other venues around the world.
The touring exhibition was used to raise funds for Spanish war relief.
The painting became famous and widely acclaimed, and it helped bring worldwide attention to the Spanish Civil War.

You said at the very end that Guernica did not represent any "specific" thing in the war...there were many battles. But this is incorrect. Although it has become, sadly, commonplace since then, to bomb cities and civilians, at that time THESE WERE THE FIRST CIVILIANS TO EVER BE BOMBED, as Guernica was THE FIRST CITY IN HISTORY be bombed! It was beyond belief to people at the time that cities and innocent civilians could be attacked and bombed like this! Guernica is Modern art's most powerful antiwar statement!

Linda Zambanini the key word you use is bombed. It is quite common for wars to include collateral damage

Guernica was being used as a military base behind the frontline.
The British had already bombed civilians in Russia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

you can try the interactive transcript (the button next to the flag underneath the video); the technology still needs some work, so a lot of the words won't be correct!

I'd like to note that the picture you showed in the video that is supposed to be an 'evil eye' is actually The Eye of Horus, a symbol of protection, royal power and good health.

The painting was not a conventional oil painting in that the paint used was house paint diluted by turpentine. Brian Fenwick.

    Guernica
    Noche elipsada de sueños pasados…
    Pesadillas…
    Noche ingerible
bajo silbidos y gritos y llantos y llantos y llantos...
... Si Picasso lo hubiera visto...
    Era de noche…
Y las manos abiertas agarraban auxilio…
    Oraciones… Desquijaramientos…
Y los brazos sedientos suplicaban sus vidas…
    Explosiones… Suplicoterruegos…
Y las bocas torcidas pucaban suicidios…
    Maldiciones… Matapirotecnios…
Y los ojos murientes despedían sus vidas...
... Si Picasso lo hubiera visto...
Puse una flor sobre mi tumba…
Puse mi tumba bajo un árbol…
Puse un árbol bajo la historia…
Puse la historia sobre un cuadro…
... Si Picasso lo hubiera visto...

Gurnica was actually totally leveled and the people were shot as they tried to flee. Also it was the Luftwaffe that did it.

The Guernica painting is the symbol of peace between the two Spain after the war. That's how the Guernica is seen in the modern Spanish culture.
