Cool video.... a few suggestions to speed up your workflow a bit and idea for creating ideas that are a bit less static.
    1. While having kicks in audio tracks is excellent for things like reverses and micro editing tricks, it relies on the idea that you've already selected the best kick for the job. Should you decide you no longer like the kick, you will have to go through and replace each audio region. This is very time consuming and flow killing. Use the simpler instead for the main kick patterns and then any micro edits can use audio tracks.
    2. Instead of duplicating clips that are identical the the previous one, you can drag the right hand side of the clip and if loop is engaged in the clip itself, it will loop for as long as you have it dragged out.
    3. The Serum pitch modulated patch that has a beat repeat on it could also have a lot more variety by assigning a different lfo to the filter cutoff. This way you can get some slightly different results out of the patch as it plays. One of the intricacies of psychedelic trance is the concept that things are slightly changing in a less predictable way and the listener can perceive the sound as constantly evolving. By making things static, it triggers our pattern recognition instincts. When people figure out a pattern, they tend not to pay as much attention to it since they already know more or less what it's going to do. By creating modulation that slightly changes, the brain keeps paying attention to the sound until they figure it out. Usually by this time, there's more layers to take people's attention.
    4. Try to embrace the session view. The way you are currently working more or less locks in your arrangement of ideas, and sometimes the first idea you make might not be the best idea for the job. Using the session view you would be able to test out collections of ideas and create an ideal flow. You also would be able to test automation concepts before printing them to the arrangement. Once you put automation in the arrangement, if you decide to remove it or alter it, it might disrupt automation later in the arrangement. You can always drag clips from the session to the arrangement view or record the session view into the arrangement.
    5. This is more of a personal comment about the stylistic name, perhaps this is more because the term "forest" has become the new buzzword for any psytrance under 160 that doesn't follow the traditional full on formula, but overall the sound of the song has more in line with acts like Southwild, Evp, and artists in those label groups. I used to call this stuff twilight, and the South African sound as a variant of twilight. Of course you can always call what you make whatever you wish. I tend to call what I make psychedelic trance. But I just see this sound having more in common with night full on or twilight as opposed to what I would refer to forest as. One final piece of unsolicited advice: Typically the dancefloor doesn't actually care what it's called or don't really know the nuances between the subgenres, so it can be difficult to assume that the dancefloor will tell you if something is one subgenre or another. All that matters is it's good or not.
That being said, the title of the video uses the term forest, which is why I checked out the video. It's nice to see what other people are doing in the genre and I love seeing new ways of how people work.
Hopefully some of these suggestions could be useful for you. All the best. - Mubali

One more thing... Use drum racks instead of individual instrument channels if you're building more or less static patterns. You can combine the lanes of all those drums into a single channel and have the ability to quickly change the pattern around. Otherwise you'd need to make new clips for each channel and that time can be better spent in other aspects of the composition.

@@mubalicious hi! thanks for taking the time to reply! as you can also see this video is a bit older and i have worked and improved my workflow a bit!
      1. i completely agree, these days i usually keep my kick midi and from the kick2 synthesizer until im ready to freeze and happy with it.
      2. i know of this trick but i still like to duplicate as it makes editing quick and easy without having to "ctrl E" or "ctrl J" selected area.
      3. i like this concept also, but i am also a junky for making the slow transitions with bigger layers instead of small detail giving the possibility to really understand the sound that is repeating. this i experimented after taking a whole trip listening to a kick on repeat ;)
      4. i used to use session view alot more, but i find this way more easy to compose. my workflow has evolved over the last ten years :)
      5. haha i love the constant struggle to label genres. i never have any idea what to call the genres i make, but i live in norway where Scando Forest is from so i just like forest name ahaha. honestly i agree this is more twilight vibe, but how many people search for twilight tutorials instead of forest tutorials? hehe.
thanks so much tho for taking the time to write me this in depth reply! really appreciated! i will contemplate on this!
also about the drumrack! haha everything takes me like 5 seconds to setup with hotkeys so i dont mind the extra time it takes :) my workflow may not be the best for everyone, but it gets my ideas out fast enough to stay in the flow for the duration of composition then the next sitdown i can focus on detail and wrapping things up before i lose the vibe i was in :)

OKAY, so I have a question!!
Im very new to Ableton and still learning everyday, so now after you made the first serum beat (2:24), you copied everything and clicked on the serum and added a MIDI; where you then dragged serum to the row. I did the same thing, but when the serum board opens up for me, there is no sound coming out. I would like to know where I've gone wrong, if you could help me out.
    Thank you.

    • @Sortna
      @Sortna  4 роки тому +2

🤔 Hmm a bit difficult to troubleshoot here. Is the plug in receiving midi? Is the plugin giving output? You can see this with the meters inside of the channel itself at the bottom of the screen next to the plug-ins when the track is selected. On the left is the input on the right is the output.
