@@shane727 maybe if he tried to make it officially part of the song but I don't see anything wrong with just playing for yourself. Have you never improvised over a song you were playing before?
Seeing the smile Mikael had on his face when Steven replayed the vocal harmonies was priceless at 1:43 - 3:00 . What really killed me was Mikael's instant "YES!" to Steven's "I'm just wondering if I should add my voice to the mix"
These guys are truly amazing. Neither Steven nor Mikael are professional musicians, in a way that they could explain things in theoretical terms, but they are both incredible intuitive geniuses. They just rely on their instincts and everything they touch turns to gold. Sure, neither of them are incredible instrumentalists, but you don't have to be a virtuoso to be a great composer.
Stevens Solo at 4:57 is one of me most briliant short solos i ever heard. After all these years i haven't seen this. I still remembered that this beautiful piece of music exist. I needed to come back to see it. This were great times to be into Opeth.
Went fishing last weekend in Hayward, WI and the guide had his radio on some public radio show on the way to the shack. Somebody was interviewing Steven Wilson and now here I am, watching this for the 50th time.
I like how in 3:40 when Steven starts to sing his "ah" parts, Mikael makes a face and turns his head towards Steven maybe thinking "What the fuck is that?? Will we keep that voice???" 😆😆
What was the song that Mikael and Steven were recording vocals on? EDIT: Found it. Master’s Apprentices. What a great song, really wish Steven’s solo at 4:58 made it in somehow

Well, Steven is not a great singer.

@@sammyloehnis3373 Many times in a live, poor voice. He has admitted it more than once.

Yea he’s not actually a great singer but luckily he so good at writing music that it works anyways and sounds amazing in his context.

In Opeth folklore now pretty much

They're pretty damn good guitarists and vocalists. I'd argue those are actually both of their strongest skills musically.
Ummm I'm pretty sure they qualify as professional musicians. Maybe virtuoso is the word you should've used. Because they're definitely professional.

Mike at 04:07 with the self check
I've listened to this album so many damn times that every time I hear an isolated drum part I instantly know what part of which song is being played.

Lopez always will be the "Opeth drummer"
He has soul and swing in his drumming. It breathes and feels human, and that's what I like.

Mikael is a fantastic musician and songwriter but his comments are often irritating (10:28) and arrogant.
You find it irritating and arrogant. I find it honest and neutral. Are you a drummer?
You can't really blame him though, most of us would be slightly arrogant if we could write even half of what he has. Genius.
I don't find any arrogance on his comments. Maybe you're a very thin skinned person.
