  • The Nikon D700 is a camera I use more than any other even though I have much more powerful and modern systems.
    It is my go -to camera for most situations - Here are my reasons why.

    When I began shooting weddings and other events in 2007, I bought a D700 and a D3. Both use Panasonic sensors but the D700 viewfinder is 95% while the D3 view is 100%. The D700 has one memory card slot and D3 has two. Buy either one. And now in my 83rd year of life, the D3 feels heavier than when new. 🙃 The D700 became what I used in Manhattan when doing shots for model portfolios. Two great cameras… my Z7 rests quietly in my camera closet.

    Took a chance on a D700 with a 140K shutter count in fairly beat up condition.
    Stuck a new thumb grip on, cleaned it up a bit and good to go.
    Just love the experience of using this camera.
    So much so that I've bought another one with a very low shutter count in excellent condition.
    Plan to keep both, use the beater for general use and keep the less used one as a spare in case the beater ever fails.
    Another good thing about the D700 is the price and variety of good quality used lenses.
    I was looking for a f2.8 70-200 zoom for equine shots indoors, got an F mount Tamron for £300, cheapest equivalent one for my mirrorless Fuji would've been around £800.
    The D700 is a great camera, don't buy one, buy two! 😁

      The D200 made me fall in love with photography all over again. What a fabulous camera! I can't see the difference between CCD and CMOS.
      I just bought a D700 to stick my toe into full frame, and am excited all over again. Because the controls and size are the same, I expect to grab one or the other interchangeably, depending whether I want the reach of DX or the wide angle and low light ability of FF.

    Enjoyed your video. There is a somewhat a resurgence in older camera gear which has become more affordable as people upgrade to newer camera greater. Many of your points apply to early Canon 5D and 6D models which I now own. Love the images from these older cameras - smaller file sizes but the rendering and images are more film like and pleasing to look at. Heard the D700 is a great camera too (as are other Nikon early digital cameras). Coming from the Fujifilm ecosystem, I can appreciate FF experience offered by these legendary cameras.

    Nikon has really let everyone down in the mythical megapixel department. The D700 bests the other bodies because its sensor has the 'largest photo sites'. Purchase a Compact Flash to SD card adapter and you're in business with your favorite SD cards!

    Hold on! You're 100% wrong about using DX lenses on FX cameras. The mounts are identical but DX lenses are designed for smaller sensors and typically the images they project will not completely cover a full size FX sensor. Using a DX lens on an FX camera will create images with absurd vignetting.
    You can use FX lenses on DX cameras with no problems whatsoever.

    • @philtv8957
      @philtv8957  10 місяців тому +5

      Nope - you can use DX lenses on an FX camera and vice versa. If you look at the menu on a D700, you have the option for both lenses. There is a lot of 'rubbish' spoken about FX camera only being able to use FX lenses etc but this is totally incorrect. You can even use 'glass' from vintage SLR cameras with the correct adaptor plate. I will go over this in my next video using an FX camera and a DX camera from Nikon with the 'wrong' glass installed. .. Thanks for your comment, and i hate correcting people, but in this case you are totally incorrect where Nikon DX and FX cameras are concerned.

    • @PitDaddy
      @PitDaddy 10 місяців тому +2

      FX cameras have a setting which "crops" thus eliminating vignetting. The downside is smaller resolution photos. However, using a D850 it's about a 24MB pic.

      Ich stimme Ihnen vollkommen zu Larry. Wenn andere Fotografen glauben, es macht Sinn DX-Objektive an der D700 zu verwenden, können sie das tun. Unsere Aufnahmen werden dadurch nicht besser oder schlechter.

    • @j_taylor
      @j_taylor 16 днів тому

      The degree of vignetting varies by lens, and as Joe mentioned by zoom too. Maybe some DX lenses have a larger image circle than others?
      Also, vignetting isn't always a problem, like portraits. I feel like it sometimes gives a more gritty mood in street scenes, too.

      The D750 looks like a wonderful camera.
      I prefer the smaller file size of the D700, and it's a fair bit cheaper on the used market. (For under $300USD I probably would replace instead of repair anyway.)
      To be fair, I love my D300 which has the same controls, battery, and memory cards, and I don't care about video.

    The guy is misleading you. Heres the deal. A D700 was a good camera up until 2011. The D800 series cameras have always had a better focus system over the 700 series. It still is the case with the Z series cams. Dont buy or look at no freak Nikon D700 in 2023, 2024 or any year after.

    • @philtv8957
      @philtv8957  10 місяців тому +16

      Im sorry you feel that way, but there are thousands of people who think the D700 is a legendary camera and is better for some types photography than more modern camera's.
      If you are into only the technical aspects of a camera, it may not be the camera for you as it does not tick all the boxes a current camera ticks. But it you want that certain look or the colours this camera produces, then there are very few alternatives out there.
      Maybe you want a camera that has small file sizes and does not fill its buffer almost immediatly. Or a camera that gives consistant quality photos that can use some of the best lenses produced in the last 30 years either in DX or FX format at a price that most can afford today then this is the camera for you.
      The D700 is also built using quality materials and will take a lot of abuse, including the shutter where over 500,000 actations is not uncommon.
      Its all about choice and preference. I like the quatliy of image this camera produces - but if you are a a person who values specs over results then it may not be the camera for you. Its all about informed choice and also showing that you do not need a camera costing 3,4,5000 Pounds or Dollars to produce masterpiece images you can be proud of.
      It is what you do with the camera, not the camera itself. -
      In my opinion, if you want a quality camera that produces unique and good results, the D700 is a great camera.
      But if you want a camera to work out everything for you where all you have to do is push the shutter buton, this is not going to be the camera for you. Neither is it if you are into tech spec bragging rights as it just wont do....
      What I find with the D800 is that the extra pixels are a bit of a waste. For example - if I take a protrait with the D800 and the same photo with the D700, the D800 although technically better does not show colour tones in the same way as the D700.
      Also, even after colour matching the D800 to the D700 in software, there is little to no difference in visual quality. They both look identical.
      The only difference is when you crop into a picture, it is then the D800 really shines. But even then there is little advantage to an APSC camera taking the same shot after compensating with lense choice.
      Without post production, the D700 in my opinion wins on the colours it produces as it looks a lot less clinical than new/newer cameras.
      The way I like to take photos, is to not have to crop. I compose the photo and show it in its natural form. There are very few occasions i crop a photo mainy as i come from an SLR background where every shot you took was composed the best you could get it before you pressed the button.
      There is NO right or wrong as photography is an art not a science project and each of us have our own opinion about what is good or bad or what is right for us.
      But if you want a camera that gives great images consistantly, the D700 is a good camera and one I use over the D800 or any of my Sony Alpha's (although I am a Sony fan) most of the time as I really enjoy the results this camera gives.
      Thats my opinion and I am sure everyone will have their own. Its neither right or wrong, but there is no need to get agressive if it does not agree with your opinion as who is to say that you are right in what you say.
      After over 250,000 photos with this camera, i think I am well placed to give an informed opinion.
      I may be or may not be right. it is all about passing on experience and I would like to hear from anyone who has used this or any other camera's extensively, so I can get a better understanding about the choices people make. - Thanks again
