Palaiochora is a coastal town located on the southwestern coast of Crete, Greece. It is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and the stunning natural beauty surrounding it. It is a favorite destination for travelers who seek relaxation, tranquility, and a place to enjoy the Greek sun and sea.
The town has a rich history dating back to the Minoan period. It was an important harbor during the Roman and Venetian eras and was heavily fortified during the Ottoman occupation. Today, visitors can explore the old town, which still retains some of its historical features and see the ruins of the Venetian castle.
Palaiochora has two main beaches: Pachia Ammos and Grammeno. Pachia Ammos is the longer beach, and it has a wide range of facilities that cater to tourists. Grammeno beach is located slightly outside the town and is much quieter and more peaceful. It is surrounded by olive groves, palm trees, and crystal clear waters.
The town has a vibrant nightlife scene, with lively bars and tavernas serving delicious traditional Greek food. Visitors can also participate in outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and water sports.

Remember this place in 1977. It was all white. Simple eating kantines, people on chairs in front of their houses talking, men playing cards. There was 1 place where they played films, on a terrace with sort of bamboo stick roof. No civilised beach, you just walked out of the street onto the beach. Some fishermen in small boats. Fresh fish with head and tale on your plate. Retzina wine. Not many tourists, some hippies. Looks totally different now. Most important, no cars back then. Only old green busses that transported everyone over the island.
