Sialeed's motives are actually deceptively straightforward. The game makes her seem more complicated than she is. The line in this scene "It was the only thing I could think of to do form them" confirms what can be guessed from other dialogue in the game. She realized they were going to win the war but that it would just continue being a never-ending cycle of corruption and power-struggling. She set herself up as a villain so she could get on the inside and clean house for them so they could inherit a purer, more united Falena. She also bore the Twilight Rune to attempt to protect them from the Sun Rune, as Lucretia observes. The reason she didn't tell the prince about her plan was most likely just to ensure there was nothing that could sabotage it. She wanted it to appear complete and authentic. It was partially motivated by her desire for Lym and the prince to lord over a more peaceful land and partially by her hatred of the nobility. It's also possible her feelings for Gizel were a factor. She's the game's antihero, and is IMO a better person in the end than Jowy in Suiko 2 was.
I agree. Jowy is not a good person. There were so many times he put Riou, Nanami and even Pilika in danger because of his actions. Also, Sialeeds is better than Miakis. In Frey's duel with her, she slits his throat while he is defenseless state if you lose.
I think she also didn't want it to appear as though there were any collusion with the prince. The less he knew, the better he looked, basically. And I absolutely agree re: Jowy. A lot of his behavior in Suikoden II was, by his own admission, motivated by jealousy.
@@burgatron526 - Four years late to the party lol. To be fair, Sialeeds was a savvy player in Falena's game of thrones, while Jowy was an ex-army recruit who is new to political intrigue, and could only work to achieve his ultimate goal with lots of help from Leon Silverburg. The fact that the Black Sword Rune compelled him to fight Riou and the Bright Shield, resulting in him continuing where Luca left off to conquer Jowston, didn't help his case.
It is explained in detail by the maids if you visit Sialeeds' room after you have retaken Sol-Falena If the Prince succesfully rescued Lym, it'll be back to the way it was with the Senates, Nobles & Corruption. If then the Prince executes the corrupt nobles (Godwin & Barows), he would lose all influence. Sialeeds then joined and used Godwin's name to kill the corrupts. Finally she sacrificed herself for the Prince & Lym's future.
It was Lucretia's idea for Queen Arshtat to bear the Sun Rune on her own person, thus protecting it from the grasp of the Godwins. Because of this, Sialeeds held Lucretia partially responsible for Arshtat's later madness and eventual death. Here, in her final moments, she attempts to outsmart Lucretia at least once as revenge. However, Lucretia correctly anticipated her every move, including deducing the reason why Sialeeds was "cleaning up the Senate", leading to Sialeeds dying bitterly.
She really did the right thing although it was not the easiest thing to see. By infiltrating the Godwins, she was able to do the dirty deeds the Prince and his army could not, her hands were the bloodiest by the end of the game. She killed Salum and you can assume she had the same done to many other nobles in that regime. Of course, getting the Twilight Rune must have been a bonus. By taking on that power, she secured the victory for the Prince. Her intent put the Twilight rune on the path to be united with the Dawn rune, and fate handled the rest. Having both runes were needed to counter the Sun rune. One could argue that while Lucretia dominated the war since Raftfleet, it could not have been won without Sialeeds securing the Twilight rune. Although Lucretia is outrageously brilliant, I'm sure she would have figured something out. But Sialeeds made it easier. The true evil is human corruption, slavery, all from the system they had in place. Even with the Sun Rune, Arshtat could not rein in her people, how could the prince achieve what she could not? Sialeeds deserved more love. She sacrificed her place in history and her life, and bloodied her hands for her country and family. She sacrificed every bit of happiness she could have ever had with Gizel, became an alcoholic, watched her sister go mad and eventually perish, watched her country go to civil war not once but twice- I think out of all the characters, she was the most determined and had the best vision of what Falena needed at the time. Lucretia was a genius but you could tell she had a soft heart. I'd bet war is easier for her than peace. I had a lot of thoughts on this game years ago. But seeing this again makes me contemplate. This was a really underrated game.
i always had Sialeeds in my team as much as I could. I think she's among the coolest looking characters of all Suikoden. Even if she ended up doing what she did, she only did what she thought was best. I wish she didnt have to die. =/
@planescaped 💯 yes, a great alt ending for her story. Someone whos learned from their mistakes and changed their ways to remain the cool and fun-loving Auntie; and doesn't need a replacement character !
This is the one scene in this game that always gets me! When I first saw it, it was late at night and I almost started crying when I saw it! Poor Sialeeds....:'(
I firmly believe Sialeeds had a death wish all along. It's clearly hinted at, even if not explicitly shown, that she's not genuinely happy. She and Gizel wanted to get married, and she broke up with him to avoid over-complicating who got the right of succession, and it's shown that neither of them were happy about that. It's also hinted that she's an alcoholic, claiming that she never sleeps well when she's sober, sleeping well into the afternoon, and punching out anyone who tries to wake her up before she's ready. She's a train wreck, though she does her best to conceal it.
From what I gathered she wanted to prolong the war for a bit longer so she could clean up the corrupt senate (killing Salum Barrows) which would make things easier for the prince and Lymsleia after the war and to also get the Twilight rune out of the hands of the Godwins which had been causing the Prince's army lots of trouble.
Sialeeds turning into a traitor threw me for a loop, but this scene caught me unguard and I just couldn't believe, that Konami still has the gall to pull red herrings like this ^^; *cough Gremio cough*
For me, Aeris' death didn't approach the level of emotion this game can elicit. I knew there was something coming anyway, it gave you back all of her items after the dream sequence. It was more like... "what? just... what? how and why did this happen?" I really recommend you to play through Suikoden V, most of its power comes from how you know the characters. Watch the scene where Nether Gate tries to assassinate the Queen and tell me it's not emotional or well crafted. Hell, I challenge anyone.
Oh, teenage me, you sweet summer child. I forgot I made this comment, 14 years is a while. Although I don't necessarily disagree with anything I said at the time, either! That said, there are a lot of games I've played since that have incredibly powerful scenes. Shadow Hearts 2, the Persona series, pretty much any Yakuza game... it's funny that it was such a defining moment in gaming history, but it never quite got me the same way - even if nowadays I do have a newfound appreciation for its poignancy. I've heard rumblings that Konami are goign to start paying more attention to Suikoden after the remaster of S2. Could we FINALLY have Suikoden VI?!
She thought by going against her nephew she could get her hands on the twilight rune and, by doing so she could be near her niece, the reason why she didn't allow lymsleia to be captured at the coronation is because it wasn't ready to end, maybe by doing this she thought she could help, thinking her betrayal might make her nephew stronger, im not entirely sure but what i do knw is that sialeeds was my favourite character, nxt is lucretia then shoon :p, great game 100/10 XD
i finish the game thousand times, and i don't know why, i still believe and searching somehow make sialeeds alive, why you said ? because of the god-damn opening Suikoden 5, at the very end of the opening we can see Prince,Lyon,Sialeed and George traveling the seas, it's from the beginning of expedition you said ? no, because the prince wore the hero suit at that opening, not the prince suit i don't know man, i just want to believe sialeeds can still be alive at the end, she's had a very hard life, and sacrifice everything, she doesn't deserve to die
I got a bit of spoiler that she would betray and suspect she could die, so i collected all 108 even reloading save file multiple times to get all 108 chars HOPING SHE WOULD GET A GOOD FATE. Was really confident she could be saved. And when the death scene happened, my heart was crushed.... left speechless. She's one of my fav chars, and after learning her motive it made me cry even more. She didn't deserve this fate, why Konamiiii, you could make her go into journey leaving sol falena for good after the war for example instead of making her died.
I think what is missed is the extent to which Sialeeds had feelings for Gizel, There was clearly tension apparent in the scene where she arrives in Sol-Falena, and the same is true of his final scene.
Not sure if any of you noticed this, but lucretia and the doc are not the ones heard crying here. Its her ex-commander that the game subtly implies had feelings for her.
are you still having trouble with the boss?..i thought it was pretty easy. i got a little nervous when they kept killing my powerhouse every turn (i had cathari with doublestrike and crazed orb...she does about 2500 each hit.) but the hero/lyon co-op each turn followed by a healer (i.e flowing rune..kindness rain, or miakis's sheild rune.. great blessing) worked well for me..they do about 1700 damage to the moth each turn and it should die after 5 or 6 turns. ignore the two things in front
This doesn't seem very sad to me at all. I feel that Aeris' death in FF7 was more emotional. Perhaps this is due to the fact that i've never played this game or gotten to know any of the characters like the chick here. In my opinion, the saddest scene in Suikoden series is when Gremio dies in S1 after opening the door for you to get out while he got chowed on by those snakes. This is real late tho... Basically the senate are noble factions that suggest plans to the queen. Advisors kindoff. Why didnt they just end the war THEN execute the godwins? Well if they had done that the people would be supicious of the prince and he possibly lose support and could not take power easily.
Thats why sialeeds wanted the war to rage on. So they could kill the godwins off without unesscary questions. Sialeeds wanted to make the godwins THE actual bad guy thus allowing the people to actually support the descicions of killing the off. Also in a war, you have to kill off the leader of the enemy faction in order to end it. Thus justifies the killing of the godwins leader gizel and marscal.
Simply taking back lym meant if they wanted to kill the godwins, they would had to formally execute them. Since there were still a lot of godwin supporters at that time, executing the godwin would possibly cause an outrage
