    Hi Chris & Shell,
    I don't suppose you realise how much of an inspiration you have been and continue to be for us. We are some way behind you on the living afloat path, currently refitting our boat on a mooring before we start CCing. So in this video you have already made inroads to the investigative work that we need to do ourselves and for that we are very grateful. We know your doing some hard yards at the mo but being able to pull that umbilical cord and be off grid full time will be amazing.
    Thanks so much not just for this video but for all the kindness that you impart every time.
    Sending best wishes and more power to your elbows for now,
    Martin and Donna

      Awww thank you guys, that’s very nice to hear. I wish we had been filming when we did our refurbishment, it was some of the most interesting times. Good luck with it, it’s worth it. Remember to say hi if you’re ever this way xxx

    Hi Chris and Shell, those Leoch PLC batteries do require a unique charging profile, so you’ll need a ‘user defined’ setting.
    For bulk and absorption you need 14.4V and float you need 13.62V. The temp coefficient is -3mV/cell/°C, so this should be set to -18.00mV/°C in the temp compensation field. The smart battery sense should be stuck to the warmest battery and on the side of it about half way up. If it’s stuck on the top of the battery it’s not measuring anything apart from an air pocket. These notes are just some pearls of wisdom for you. 👍🏻

      Also charge current at 30a and Equalisation at 14.25v. Are these right? Couldn’t find them in the lit’?

      @@ChrisandShell which solar controller did you fit? 100/50? And please disable the equalisation, there’s an option as you scroll down in expert mode. You really don’t want to equalise any VRLA or sealed battery….not good.

    Beautifull tilting system. Solar systems are often like this, finding things to make it run better in more situations and more optimal. They are not like an AC-outlet ;-)
    Good thing is you went for Victron, that does help a lot to start with.

    I was also going to suggest just checking all the battery connections are good and tight. They sometimes need nipping up after a week or so after first install. This happened to me once, and flickering 12V lights was the clue. However, I have read down the comments, and it looks like you have it solved ;) I did wonder about you putting solar on the boat. If I was on a mooring like yours and it was allowed, I think I would have put the majority of solar on the land, and only a small panel, probably a flexible one glued to the roof on the boat. Most of the time, you don't need much when you're cruising as long as alternators/batteries etc are working fine. Just my thoughts :)

    • @ChrisandShell
      @ChrisandShell  2 роки тому

      Hey Ronnie, we will be installing more solar on the art studio roof and hopefully adding wind generation to the mix. We are future proofing for when we can go and continuous cruise… 🤞🏴‍☠️😊

    I have the same brackets as you with 3 X 460W panels on my NB and although they are very good they do scrape the roof paint down to metal when you tilt them. The solution is a packet of plastic door stops from Screwfix, drilled and bolted (M5 stainless) at the end of the arms. Still tough in winter though but I am a very heavy user.

    • @ChrisandShell
      @ChrisandShell  2 роки тому

      Great tip! Thanks Mark, that is a big set up, I am thinking of throwing another panel in the mix, but we aren’t heavy users at all really… so we are going to give this set up a try over winter. We will be adding wind on the mooring at some point… 👌🏴‍☠️😊

      @@ChrisandShell I have a 600Ah lithium battery setup and left the marina in mid march and have never had to run the engine to charge the batteries until last week. Can run the WM without running the engine and is great, but even with this system I will be in a marina for three month over the winter as life would be a bit grim with such a low sun and short days. IMO you can't have enough solar! Good luck and if you haven't got one already do yourself a favour and get a Victron Battery monitor, will help you save your batteries.

    • @ChrisandShell
      @ChrisandShell  2 роки тому

      Thanks Mark, yes we have the Victron Connect battery sense fitted. At some point we will definitely be adding another panel and 2 batteries…. Waiting on the funds to grow!!! 👌😊🏴‍☠️

      Dude! I’m hoping no one reads this, as it’s a total spoiler for next week. That is exactly the problem!!!!!!! Alternator diodes. Thankfully our electrician Sandra sussed it after we replaced the old corroded kill switch and the fixings in to the control box…. Turbine is coming, solar roof on the shed, we are pivoting to the garden now. Maybe even the art studio… would love to know more about your exact problems S how you figured it?
