Gooden’s 1985 season is still to this day the best season I’ve ever seen by a pitcher. 24-4 with 16 complete games, 8 shutouts and an ERA of 1.53. Every time he went out to pitch you thought he was going to get a no hitter. Absolutely dominant!!
The Gooden / Strawberry years were so much fun. Most of those years, I either watched or listened to at least 150+ games/season.
2nd that. Met him backstage at the ESPYS the year the Yanks won ‘97. Took a pic with him.
I was in elementary school at the time. Just started collecting baseball cards because my buddy showed me Doc's 1985 Topps rookie card and said it was worth $4 at the time. Was very fortunate that our Cable Company at the time in Long Beach CA had WOR New York which showed Mets games. Was able to follow the Mets with Gooden and Strawberry through their World Series run.
Yup
Dude was like nothing I have ever seen from 83-90
Absolute beast
Yes Gooden was the greatest electrifying pitcher New York has ever seen
I agree I was there
People nowadays laugh at me when I say this but Gooden's first 5 years he was Michael Jordan staus. He was thar dominant
I live in Canada and I remember catching a game on TV with my dad where Doc was pitching a complete game shutout. It was in 1987... I was in complete awe. He's been my favorite pitcher ever since.
I'm grateful I was alive to watch Doc during his early years. An absolute pitching Stud.
Had the pleasure of meeting him this evening at a signing in my area. He was incredibly nice and really took the time to talk to me. Thanks, Doc!
Technically, the headline should read "Doc Gooden's Most Dominant Performances... as a Met," since he did pitch a no-hitter for that other NY team.
As a Mets fan since 1984, this certainly brought back a lot of great memories. 😊
That’s when I became a Mets fan!
@@vietnamd0820 high five! ✋

✋☺️❤️
I grew up a Mets fan in the 80’s I never saw Seaver by far Doc Gooden was an event every time he took the mound he was must see tv. To me he would’ve been a 1st ballot Hall of Famer if it wasn’t for drugs.
Dr. K ! : ).
They had that big build board of him next to the DNKY store I Manhattan for so long in NY.
Who didn't try to mimic his delivery:)?
Him & Roger Clemens in 85 was the most spectacular & dominate pitching seasons I ever seen! I loved them both!
These work great days to be a Mets fan. It's hard to appreciate newer Mets fan the energy that he brought to the NY City area when he pitched. If it was a weekend game the city practically shut down
I still have one of the "K's" shown at the 4:00 mark, framed in pristine condition.
Shea was so electric when Doc pitched. I miss that atmosphere at Citi.
The crowd was so into the strikeouts. So much anticipation.
He’s one of the big reasons I became a Mets fan……….
Crazy how much harder pitchers throw now. Docs fastball was in the air for a full second. His funky delivery helped alot.
Dwight Godden had a fastball clocked at 100 mph in 1990.. The old JUGS guns clocked the ball as it crossed the plate, while the newer guns clock the ball coming out of the arm. 100 back then is like 104 now. The guys aren't throwing that much faster these days.
Doc pitched with the old speed Gun today's pitchers are a joke pitching with a faster jug Gun,and the balls are wound today to go faster..Doc won 157 wins for the Mets. His hee pitched 10 innings many times.todays others are a joke Dwight Gooden was the most Dominant pitcher of his time.
What is this nonsense
In today's numbers, Doc was probably touching 96.
@@chriswells506Actually probably faster. They measure it from the release point now instead of 60 feet. 85 Gooden was probably 99+.
I got his Jersey. This video makes me admire the Mets even more! 💯💯💯💯💯
He was great.
I had the pleasure of meeting Doc he is my all time favorite PITCHER. ❤️ A gentle giant who stole my heart.
Best I have ever seen. He is the reason I am a lifelong Mets fan.
And how bout in comparison to Degrom?
One of the best. Koufax and Pedro are two of the best.
@@MB-gd6beDegrom who?
Saw him throw 9 straight 100 mph fast balls against the Padres. Never seen heat like that in person.
Dude had 2 pitches and made fellow major leaguers look small.
What a fantastic talent Doc was!
Doc was the man!
LOVE this guy. 🤘🤘❤️❤️ LGM
You’re still the best Doc
Nineteen. That's just beyond crazy.
I was a little kid, but I remember me and my grandparents huddled around the radio. Them going nuts for Gooden and Strawberry. Good memories.
HE PITCHED A 10 INNING GAME AGAINST HOUSTON. TODAY STARTING PITCHERS ARE USUALLY GONE AFTER FIVE INNINGS IN A PLAY-OFF GAME.
one of the best playoff games i've ever seen, but i say that about most of tthat series
My fav player of all time
RIP Dutch rennert @7:15 as kids we went nuts when he called strikes 🤣🤣🤣
Dutch Rennert was the best MLB umpire ever! He was a freakazoid. He was so theatrical! He was the home plat up when I went to Shea to watch Game 4 of 1988 NLCS. I was sitting far away in the left field upper deck and we could hear Rennert calling the strikes. In the Naked Gun film Leslie Nielson hilariously parodied Rennert as ump.
Doc still rocks LFGM23
struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth. WOW!
What he lack in speed he had it in NASTYNESS !
Eighty five season was the greatest of all time
5:11: A curve ball with so much break in it Carter has to short hop it to catch it!
they will never retire his number
Next year
@@fbx03 yup
He was Pedro before Pedro.
Nick this one is for you
As impressive as his fastball was, I often think his curveball was even more impressive.
Guaranteed hall of famer if he could have kept his shit together.
I disagree. The Mets overworked Doc Gooden, so much so that he was injured when only 26 years old, an age when most pitchers are still approaching their best days (ua-cam.com/video/Z1-vTxAUQTk/v-deo.html). As for the partying, well, nobody looks back and thinks, "I did not get fucked up enough." But Mickey Mantle hit the ball in the middle out of the park more than 500 times, so substance abuse does not necessarily short-circuit a baseball career.
@@jimlareginaI'd wager that his coke addiction did far more damage to his career.
@@jimlaregina I don't know. Dennis Eckersley pitched a lot better after he stopped drinking.
Hey Steve, retire #16 and #18 (and #5 soon too).
Long overdue. No matter what their issues were. They put butts in the seats during the mid80s and brought a championship
@@MrJsfingers next year guys!
One of 2 aces to bring a title to the team before moving on.
Doc
God those days mean nothing now no HOF
If they only knew what I was doing that you will never know what to do with it
I blamed the Mets for ruining his career for making him over-pitched. Also none of his older teammates back then set a good example for him
THOSE WERE THE DAYS WHEN STARTING PITCHERS WERE NOT LIKE TODAY'S OVERPAID, OVERHYPED FIVE AND SIX INNING PITCHERS.. ALSO STRUCK OUT OVER 300 HITTERS IN DOUBLE A. HAD HE BEEN IN HIS PRIME NOW, FORGET ABOUT deGROM, VERLANDER, SCHERZER AND COLE.
Vlad sent me here
Degrom>gooden
Absolute bs hes not in the hall.
HOF possibility right up his left nostril
