It's not ageism. People are not complaining that Madonna should retire from singing/touring because she's 60. People are discussing how she has messed up her face from plastic surgeries. People discuss "plastic faces" about younger celebrities too, ie Meghan Fox.

I never liked Madonna. It's ironic that her name means "My Lady."

Betty White, Jessica Tandy, Betty Davis, Maggie Smith are just four examples of female celebrities who aged gracefully and continued to be successful in their careers. Maggie Smith’s character in Downton Abbey was the most memorable character in the entire series IMHO.

Perfect point. The problem with Madonna, unlike the rest of those women, is that she built her fame on looks and sex appeal. She was a good performer, but looks and sex appeal fade with age, and she didn't develop (for the lack of a better word) a certain "je ne sais quoi". Instead, she tried to hold on to the easy mantra of "sex sells".
I would accept her natural aging.

I live in a small town and in my twentys I was a malestriper and definitely pushed a few buttons. I have always kept a good appearance. I take care of myself and at 62 look younger than I am. But, people criticize me for not letting my hair go grey say my face is to smooth and put me down. I pay no attention to them and just Liv my best life. This criticizeisum is not just for women.

By the way, I’ve followed Madonna since the 80s, and she has been a cultural influence, and I respect her, for the most part.

The one knock on Madonna that I have ever heard is when she dumped her three dogs at a shelter when they got old and sick, and she didn't provide the funds for their health care- this was so sad, so evil/ unethical really. As far as for her face, she looks like she has had bad plastic surgery/other procedures, like many famous men and women. Men who have been criticized for this include Simon Cowell, Billy Crystal, Will Ferrell(his bad eye plastic surgery took away most of the expressiveness of his face- so sad- he should have stayed natural), Kenny Rogers, Carrot Top, Michael Jackson, and many others.
Kenny's droopy eyes were sexy. After he had plastic surgery, he looked like he was startled all the time. Couple that with his huge weight loss and he looked like a stranger.

People aren't discriminating her based on her age, on the contrary. People are criticising her for not accepting her own age. If anything, she's the one being ageist.
This has little to do with misogyny in my opinion although I agree that women do have to deal with ageism far more then men.
So why do I say in Madonna's case this has little to do with misogyny? For two reasons: 1. This has everything to do with totally botched plastic surgery which can (and does) happen with younger people too. And reason #2: Cumulatively, over the years, I've heard more comments about Mickey Rourke's wrecked face due to botched plastic surgery than any one woman (even more times than I heard comments about Jocelyn Wildenstein, the "cat lady").
So Madonna and the editors at Vogue can scream misogyny all they want - but this is about totally botched plastic surgery, not about someone's age.

I never understood the fascination with Madonna. I went back and looked at her early stuff thinking maybe that would impress me but even her best stuff isn't entertaining. It seems ppl in the 80's must've been terribly bored to the point where they'd find anything "shocking."

Madonna labeled the backlash wrong. Judging by the comments on her looks, its more about people being against plastic surgery and her not choosing to let herself naturally age. Which now she's suffering the consequences for misblaming it. Despite incorrectly blaming it, at the end of the day its her body. People all have their interpretations of what is beautiful and there will ALWAYS be a group of people that aren't pleased regardless. I hope she is personally happy with her look and not letting societal pressure make that judgement.

Just this week, we all seen Martha Stewart "on the cover of a magazine" (no pun intended,) at 81 years of age and she looked effing incredible! All natural with no botox or anything.

I love Madonna, and have, since the beginning of her career, and in no way would ever want to throw shade, or hate, but concern, & sadness, is how I feel.......I feel sad, because as a role model to many women, I would have loved to see someone of her status, grow older gracefully, letting us know, it is ok to age, and still be beautiful, and my concern is, the amount of plastic surgeries, have me questioning, why?
