  • Taking on one of North-West England’s classic walks to the top of Pendle Hill in the Forest of Bowland AONB. I also stopped by the little village of Downham in Lancashire on route.

When searching for walks in the Forest of Bowland I noticed that Pendle Hill was coming up a lot - often cited as one of the best walks in the Ribble Valley area and an enjoyable option for anyone in the North-West of England. I decided to grab my walking shoes and give it a go.
On my way there I drove through a tiny Lancashire village called Downham where it turns out the original film version of Whistle Down the Wind was made in the 1960’s. The film was remade into a musical in the 1990’s by Andrew Lloyd Webber and one of my musical heroes Jim Steinman - so I just had to stop by and take a look around.
After an enjoyable walk through Downham I drove a few miles up the road until I reached what looked like a parking area for the Pendle Hill walk. I left my car with a few others, consulted a couple of walkers returning from the adventure and then set off through a pretty avenue of trees and out into a farm yard.
As I pushed my way through the gate I found the first official sign that gave me two options for getting to the top - a steep but direct route or a less direct gentler climb. I decided to go for the former on the way up and the latter on the way down. The steeper route was a tough one, it was like following a rocky set of steps into the clouds - my legs were taking a beating but the views were out of this world.
Pendle Hill is 557 metres (1,827 feet) and is the highest point in the Ribble Valley. A bronze age burial site has been discovered at the top of the hill and in 1612 the infamous Pendle witch trials took place there which led to the execution of 12 ‘witches’ accused of witchcraft.
Those days are long gone however, Pendle Hill is now a peaceful and serene place for walking and a fantastic location to enjoy views of the surrounding rolling hills of the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland.

The village did a very good job in ensuring it's not been spoilt by modern technology. I guess it's just the cars parked on the side of the road that show the big change. Nice to see that the parking was free and not a shambles can it can be in other parts. I too would have done the challenging up and moderate back down as it's nice on the knees to come down that way! I'm still very envious of your mic and how well it handles the wind. Even though you could hear the wind at the top, I could still hear your speech perfectly! Really lovely video and a hike I'll do for sure when I make it up that way!

I thought we were both using the same camera - the Sony ZV1? If so, perhaps you have a fault with your microphone. Happened to me when I bought my first GoPro but I didn't realise it until a few years later. It was a nice hike to round the trip off, shame about the wind and cloud at the top but at least I got some glimpses of the surrounding countryside. The village of Downham was a bonus, glad I stopped by to have a look!

@Matt Whiting's Europe Ooooh I didn't realise you had the ZV1 too (I remembering eyeing up the shadow of your camera in a Malta video and had assumed you had a Go-Pro! 🤦‍♀) Do you use the inbuilt mic? My other half got me a separate mic for Christmas last year, I personally can hear the quality difference between newer videos when I've used it, and older ones when I haven't, but it's terrible when wind hits it! That said, I never would have guessed you were using the inbuilt one as when it's not windy, your sound is good then too. Maybe in extreme wind, I need to unplug the external one and go back to the inbuilt one. Still learning lol!!

Yeah this was the first trip where I used the ZV-1, previously I had used the Canon G7X Mark II which I absolutely loved but a sand storm in Scotland finished it off after many years of impeccable service. When replacing it I was torn between the G7X Mark III and the ZV1 and I went with the latter because it seemed to be more geared towards vlogging (one of the reasons was better audio). In Malta I primarily used my G7X but also the GoPro for certain scenes (usually on the car or where there was a risk of water damage). I usually carry out some basic adjustments on the audio in the editing process (mostly ensuring the gain is at a decent level) but I've found that I need to do a lot less of that with the ZV1. Having a good wind muff can make all the difference with wind noise and luckily the ZV1 came with one as standard, so my set up is just the in-built microphone and supplied wind muff. Having said all of that, I have thought about buying the Rode Wireless Go microphone on a few occasions but have never got as far as taking the plunge - I prefer to keep it simple where I can.

I've definitely been here! This is bringing back some serious childhood memories right now... I'm from Manchester, so remember all the weekend outings in the wonderful North! The cute stone houses, the cloudy weather, you can't beat it! I'm going to go and check out Jim Steinman right now... and also subbing to your channel!

That's great, thank you. Glad you enjoyed reliving some of your childhood memories! Nobody writes quite like Jim Steinman, he is definitely the Richard Wagner of our time! Your channel looks great, will definitely take a close look.

Rock opera sounds like something we didn't know we needed!

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  2 роки тому +1

Steinman's sound is largely influenced by Richard Wagner so it's almost Wagnerian rock opera! Not much better if you ask me!! 🎵

Thanks Richard, much appreciated. It's part of the Forest of Bowland, which strangely enough seems to be split in two by the Ribble Valley. Lovely area though!

Ha, yes I thought so too at one point. Not having much luck with my hikes at the moment - it's either windy or cloudy! Longing for a calm, clear day!! Thanks for watching, Jann.

I like it that you started ascending Pendle Hill from Downham and not from Barley or Nick of Pendle, makes it a more interesting view and different from other videos on You Tube.

Hey Olga, a little later in the video I drove from Downham to somewhere close to Barley and started ascending from there. I would have loved to hike direct from Downham but sadly I didn't have the time! Next time maybe!!

Thank you Cath, glad you enjoyed it! Shame about the weather, I spent a few hours sitting in the car waiting for the rain to ease up. Got soaked walking out to that bridge but maybe that's why I had it all to myself. Thanks for watching.

You went up the way we came down, we ascended from the reservoir via low wood (Which is haunted apparently). ua-cam.com/video/4l33hFJEi5Q/v-deo.html&feature=shares

I wasn't sure which way to tackle it but went for the steeper section (steps) on the way up and then the longer but gentler trail for the return. Worked out pretty good. Didn't know the woods were haunted, glad it was daylight!
