Man, you had both hands full and your-hair-in-your-mouth with this one!! One handed filming, painting, narrating, even delighting us with some pallet action! Meastro!! Amazing.
Your clouds remind me a bit of Sisley’s studies on how the light reflects in the snow. He’s one of my faves and you too for sure, such a gorgeous way of capturing light and nature with simplicity
Great job on the clouds, Michael! I'm always amazed at how there are never clouds in the sky there in CA. Even without clouds in the sky, you always make the sky look interesting.
I like the cloud effects. That area of California is so beautiful in regard to the sea coast. The Monterey wind swept coast and the jet stream. Study of clouds. I liked your painting a lot.
Very nice painting, Michael. The composition and perspective really sell it. It is interesting to me that the view is so much closer in the painting than the video. I wonder how much of this is because of the camera lens, which always makes everything look further away, and how much was just a decision on your part to zoom in on the distant landscape.
Thanks Will! I think I could have had less contrast in the clouds. That would have pushed them back. The scene I painted was in the distance. I like painting distant scenes because detail is eliminated. Easier to compose and simplify!
“Greying down with compliments”, I love how you worded that. I don’t consider myself a painter but I apply your philosophy to my daily life and it works. Thank you
I'm really glad that you are as open to experimentation and trying new things as you are, and especially that you are confident enough to show them in process. For someone established and known for their "style", I think it takes a lot of courage. It was an interesting and I think largely successful painting. I especially liked the yellow ochre tone color -- I think it worked very well for this scene, especially for the sky. I would like to see the picture again, should you decide to rework the clouds. As they are they are very dramatic, maybe too much so for my taste. But so what about that: I'll be the first to admit that I don't know what I'm talking about. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Michael! As others suggested, I think I'll leave this one as is and attempt another with bigger, simpler shapes. I love experimentation. It's what keeps me excited to paint!
Hi Michel I listened to your podcast Fantastic ! The though came to me while listening maybe you could do motivational seminars for artist and creatives . Almost like the Tony Robins type of thing but more targeted to a specific group .I got so much out of your podcast love the start surfing in your 50's what a hoot ! Shows its never to late people need to hear this stuff and get inspired .
Here on cape cod we have clouds almost everyday...wish I could send some to you... sometimes I just do cloud studies on 8x10's...really is one of my favorite subjects...
I love how you’re paintings always come together, the process is just fascinating to watch! I love the scenery you paint as well, very different from the views here in India, makes it quite fun to watch!
That was an interesting video and I came away with some good ideas. For me, your dark areas of your clouds could have some variation in value from distant to closer areas and maybe be a little more neutral. I love how you paint wet sand.
Really interesting to watch a longer video of you painting. Did this one actually take longer, or did you just include more footage? I did a painting in gouache where I toned my board in yellow ochre. It was of the beach right at the sunset but with the sun behind me, so the sky was illuminated but not the full on amazing colours of an actual sunset. I felt it created a lovely luminous, airy effect but I am pretty sure that I did not wipe the yellow ochre back as much as you did - it was probably half to one shade more intense. There was no problem with the blue of the sky mixing with the yellow ochre, but then gouache is a different beast from oil paint. Just thought I would share my experience. : ) Amanda
Thanks Amanda! I just included more footage. I think I talked more during this painting. I tried leaving more of the yellow ochre but it wouldn't stain the panel the way burnt sienna does. I may try a different yellow. Hansa yellow light for example.
Just the thought of painting outdoors with some friends in such a beautiful place brings me peace! I’ve never tried oil painting, but I’d love to learn how to do some plein air stuff. Where would you recommend starting?
It can be really helpful to take an introductory painting class to learn the basics before heading outdoors to paint. You could also learn from videos or books if that works better for you. It takes a while to get comfortable with the materials and the painting process. Once you're comfortable go for it! I made a video talking about the materials you need: ua-cam.com/video/K3E-VQ3Xmxo/v-deo.html

I used to use cerulean instead of phthalo for that very reason, but I like that I can get saturated tints with phthalo. It also mixes beautiful saturated aqua colors.
Thanks Andrew! I find that I often need to mix some phthalo blue with ultramarine for the darker portion of the sky. If I just use ultramarine it ends up looking like the shadow portion of the clouds. I'll try to talk about it in a future video!
“” Cloud Walkers “” in the sky move to and into a clear water center from left, yet others have ascended out of the same and move to the right. I think there are at least 3 dimensions here in these clouds. Viewed differently, see to the left and to the right two faces gazing skywards, both have a chin , each towards center. Many beautiful things in this painting , Thank you Michael. ❤️

Those paintings are really beautiful, I am impressed ! but is it difficult to paint clouds ? Because I know for sure that it is much easier for me to draw some than to paint them 😅
Nice painting, it's incrdible to watch how you apply the painting like if you were not given a damn lol...so loose. Stupid question: I see people wearing heavy jackets and beannies on their heads but you are always on flip flops. Are all those people exaggerating or you are just athermic?
Thanks Martin! Haha, yes I'm just having fun applying the paint. I figure if I don't like something I'll just wipe it off and try again. As for me wearing flip flops, I should probably be wearing shoes. It is winter after all. My feet don't get cold tho! 😂

Good video. Love Maura's clouds. Your holding the camera close to the board is new and it really shows the brush strokes. Thanks Michael.
Thanks Charm!
What a beautiful day at the beach. I really love the painting, and really appreciated the tips about color near the end. Thanks Michael!
Thanks Lesley!
You inspired me to not watch this until I had taken my w colours outside to paint. I’m hooked. Carrying oils to the beach like you do, is impressive
Cool! Glad you got outside! 😊👍

A stunning day painting whipped cream clouds in the sun. Your clouds, composition and palette are great.
Thanks Maura! Yes, another beautiful day in SC. I love the simple, strong design you came up with! Let's paint clouds again soon 😊

It would be interesting to see the same painting with burnt sienna as the first layer, just to compare. Thanks for a nice video.

Michael I find thalo blue too overwhelming and use cerulian blue instead with ultramarine as my cooler blue?

Is that a linen panel? It seems to have a very visible plaid like weave. Fun painting. Really nice.
Thanks Elisabeth! It's one of my homemade hardboard panels. The visible weave is created by brushing on the gesso in alternating directions.
