I had ankle surgery also. An incision on the outside of my right ankle. 7 screws & a 5in plate. It’s been 6 years and it still hurts to this day. Scar isn’t bad but you can see and feel several screws under my skin. Can’t run, dance, wear high heels like I used to. I walk normal now. Only problem I do have is walking down stairs, no stability in my ankle. Wish I had more physical therapy after my surgery but insurance wouldn’t cover it.

I slipped on an icy step seven years ago and suffered a horrific fracture of the tibia/fibula in my right ankle. The fracture was so unstable that my orthopedic surgeon had to stabilize it with an external fixator which was left in place for six weeks before he could go in and do permanent repairs with a plate and eight screws. Two weeks after the surgery I developed a MRSA (staph) infection requiring five months of IV and oral antibiotics. It was hell. I was basically wheelchair-bound for almost eight months and had to do my own physical therapy and teach myself to walk because I was uninsured. After I began walking, I developed chronic venous insufficiency in my right leg with a stasis ulcer, which will not heal. I am managing the ulcer with daily cleansings with Hibiclens soap and dry dressings. At least I am able to walk--which is something neither I or my orthopedic surgeon thought I would never do again.

Pam Alford Oh gosh I am so sorry to hear. My surgery was almost 7 years ago. I developed an infection months after surgery but thank goodness it was treated with antibiotics. I also had blood clots in my lungs less then a month after surgery.

I had that op about 8 weeks ago, but I also had a plate fixed to the fibula, it was dislocated, when they reset the ankle I was screaming with pain, I had an injection in the spine to numb the bottom half of my body, I could watch the op if I wished.

I’m an RN who suffered a seizure while driving, and suffered bilateral compound ankle fractures in January. I’m still not able to fully walk :/ It also seems my feet are bigger?? Anyway, the tip of the pin was dislodged and left inside my foot when the pins were taken out. I had to go back into surgery for removal of that pin this past Monday....been such an ordeal.
